Cat S60 Rugged Smartphone with FLIR

See The World From A New Perspective

The Cat S60 includes an embedded thermal camera from FLIR, allowing Cat phone users to use their smartphones for a multitude of use cases, including: detecting heat loss around windows and doors; spotting moisture and missing insulation; identifying over-heating electrical appliances and circuitry; and seeing in complete darkness.

The thermal camera visualizes heat that is invisible to the naked eye, highlighting temperature contrasts. It can pick up heat and measure surface temperatures from a distance of up to 50 to 100 feet, and see through obscurants such as smoke, enabling a huge range of use cases for building professionals, utility workers, outdoor sports enthusiasts, and emergency first responders to name but a few.

Drop-proof to 1.8 meters and reinforced with a strengthened die cast frame, the Cat S60 is the perfect companion to those living even the most rugged of lifestyles.

Very Good in Most Respects, Very Useful (but Somewhat Hobbled) FLIR, Mediocre Camera
So, I have been working with the S60 phone for a couple of weeks now. I wanted a rugged phone that could survive a few drops, was water resistant, had a pretty big battery, had a loud and clear speaker especially for the speakerphone, good reception, a bright screen and was not too big. This phone meets all of these criteria (presumably, in the case of ruggedness, as I have not tested this, I bought a full case anyway).I would have preferred a bigger battery (like the S41, 5000 mAH), but the battery lasts a couple of days if not used extensively, maybe 3 days per charge when just idling (no bluetooth or WIFI), so minimally acceptable. It does fall short when used for navigating on Google Maps, so I need to keep a charger in the cars for this purpose. I retrofitted my last phone (Samsung S4) with a monster 7500 mAH battery, that was great. Can't do that here, can't get to the battery. The FLIR is impressive, not that I am any expert in FLIR technology. I have found many uses for it already--while this is "low resolution" FLIR, and the FLIR software available from their website does not recognise the files, it is still quite useful. I can see through the walls and ceiling in my old house and see missing insulation! I found insulation leaks in my heating system. I can easily see where the dog has walked 3 minutes after she leaves the area. I used it to find thermal leaks in my heater duct insulation. Study the thermal gradient in my refrigerator, 45 degrees on top, 29 on bottom, don't put lettuce down there! I checked out the heat distribution from a new hot air register I installed in the house, see photo. Very cool.As reported by many, the regular camera is pretty mediocre, certainly poor relative to expensive ordinary phones these days. It is not unusable, as many say, but it is not at all impressive. Color balance is way off when used indoors, and the software offers no EFFECTIVE way to adjust this as best I can tell.Of course you can do this in Photoshop later, but a hassle. If you are shooting outdoors in the daylight to document things, it will be mostly fine, but other than that, not so good. It works OK for macro shots, which I used with my prior phone, if you download the Microscope app. It is slow to focus and take the image. Maybe a better app will improve the usability of the camera. So if you just need to document things on the job site, or take photos of the kids at the amusement park, it will be fine. But if you expect a lot from your camera, you may be disappointed.Note that I do not play games on my phone, so I have no basis to judge that. It runs fine with all of the apps I had on my old phone.I knew going in that the camera was marginal, so I am not disappointed. Same with the non-removable, marginally sized battery. So overall I am quite satisfied with this purchase. I hope that the next generation addresses the camera and battery size issues, because other than these it is a great phone. A better camera with some real controls and software and at least 5000 mAH and it would be perfect!

I purchased this phone a little over 6 months ago for the FLIR camera and the durability of the built in case and I must say I'm pretty impressed!!! The FLIR camera has been extremely helpful. It takes a few seconds to load but it's worth the wait. There is a bit of a lag but in my line of work it's still worth it. I haven't checked the temp measurement against anything else so I don't know how accurate it is but you can see hot and cold spots in walls so you know where you need to insulate. Used it to measure the temp of machines before working on them. I recently saw the residual heat pattern on a wooden floor from someone that was standing there a few minutes before that was wearing socks. The dogs heard something in the middle of the night and I used it to scan for heat signatures. The dogs lit up on the screen in a pitch black yard but apparently it was just dogs being dogs. The image starts to get blurry around 30 feet but if you know what you're looking for you can still see enough definition to be able to make it out.
The built in case is well made however it could use some knurling on the sides or back for grip. The access doors that cover the micro USB and the earbud jack are a bit more flimsy than I would like. There's a small piece of rubber that's used as a hinge. I haven't broken mine but it looks like it would be pretty easy to do. The placement is a bit awkward as well. Looking at the screen they're located on the lower left side instead of the bottom so holding it while it's charging or having the headphones jacked in makes it difficult to hold. Other reviews talked about having the access door on the back pop open when they dropped it. I haven't experienced that but I also haven't dropped it or submerged it in water although it does have a sensor of some kind that detects moisture and asks if you would like to use the "speaker dry" function that comes installed. It apparently works pretty well because having the phone in my pocket on a hot day set it off.
The screen resolution seems to be as good if not better than other smart phones I've had. Apps open and close pretty quick. This phone does come with a "Toolbox" app and it has come in handy a few times not having to search around on the play store.
It has an actual AM/FM radio. Unfortunately you can't listen to it without having earbuds connected. I'm assuming this is because the cord is used as an antenna. Not sure if you would be able to use it with a bluetooth headset.
I'm a bit hard of hearing and this phone is loud enough I can actually hear while using it and hear it ring.
Overall it's an excellent phone that's not loaded up with a ton of unnecessary apps right out of the box!

Worst phone with the worst camera I've ever had. The first one they sent was junk right out of the box, that should have given me a clue right there, instead I exchanged it and this one works, but not much better.
Issues:1. It shut itself off once for a week, no amount of charging or reset button pushes would get it to turn on. Then one day I walked by where it was laying, and it was on.
    2. The screen is like looking at an old tube TV that isn't coming in very well, that's at best, sometimes the colors on the screen fade like an old pair of jeans, then 20 minutes later it's back to it's normal terrible resolution.
    3. Don't buy this phone if you take a lot of pictures or video. This function is all but useless on this phone. My blackberry in 2011 took 1080p video and Crystal clear pics. I think Caterpillar bought all of Nokia's old cameras from the nineties and used them on this phone.
    4. No one can understand a word I say. I don't make phone calls anymore because I get tired of repeating myself. Text only pretty much.
    5. The software is horrible. File commander takes a full 30 seconds to open pictures and every time they update it there's a permanent message that won't go away until you visit them. Same with ads from other apps on the phone. Pretty annoying indeed.
    6. The swipe function in text will get every word except the one you want 90% of the time
    7. The FLIR is neat, but when compared to 2 other phones simultaneously, all three will give different temps, if you need accuracy, buy a real one, this one is more of a novelty than a tool.
Overall, this is the second worst$600 I ever spent, the first was an engagement ring in my twenties, she was absolutely crazy, but I'd take her back before I buy another Caterpillar phone. It's a shame too, great idea, piss poor execution. The only good thing I can say is it's tough. I got mad the last time it shut itself off and threw it out of the lift I was working in. It didn't break. I was disappointed

I have dropped them on concrete, in mud, in rivers, in hurricanes. I have broken countless screens. Once I even blew up a cell phone when I electrocuted myself when hanging Christmas lights. I've been dropped from cell phone insurance plans even though I was paying $9.95/month with $200 deductible. All, that is, but the CAT S60. Going on 2+ years with no plans to replace.

-Physical buttons! (I love not having to go onto the screen and running through the setting for everything)
-Dual Sim Slots (perfect for businesses)
    -Expandable memory
    -Headphone jack
-Brightest LED on any phone I've ever seen
-Used several hours every day for over 2 years and the screen hasn't lost a pixel
    -Programmable key
-SOS key (send 2 of your contacts your location and a message with one push of a button)
-Never dropped a call from my end
    -Built in GPS
    -Film and pictures underwater!

    CONs
-Heavy (I love the solid construction but it will not appeal to everyone)
-Water-proofing and speaker drying process kind of weird
-Android OS would be the worst OS if it weren't for iOS (RIP Blackberry and Windows Phone, you are missed)
    -Small Screen for the price
-FLIR is neat party trick but is all but useless otherwise
-Cameras are terrible (FLIR is SD only with huge FLIR logo on image files making it useless for most commercial use)
-Case can get exceptionally hot if you are running high processor apps
-DO NOT TAKE IN SALT WATER!

It would be around now that I should be looking for a new phone (26 months) but I love the S60 and am not looking forward to the day that I can no longer upgrade the OS or memory.

Overall a decent phone. It looks sweet with it's aluminum chassis and CAT on the back and it is very fast for a "tough phone". The battery life is pretty damn good and the display / cameras look and function great. Speaker grill and USB covers are too fragile though. Headphone jack and USB ports are in awkward places. The switches on the front to waterproof the phone to 5m seems cool but why do I have to "close off the speakers" I've had cheaper phones that are always water proof to 5m. I want to love the phone but it has too many design flaws for it's price.

My husband couldn't be more happy! He breaks everything & now finally has a cool phone that works amazingly, that he won't accidentally break! He absolutely loves the thermal imaging as well!

Not solid. CAT doesn't honor the warranti. Don't want to replace the broken door.
