Now, on to the review.
I ordered this kit as a gift for my cousin who is jsut getting in to PC gaming and will be putting together a gaming computer next week. Overall, I was fairly impressed with the quality and contents of the tool kit. The 45-piece tool kit is somewhere between a basic computer tool kit and a complete kit for working on electronic circuits.
The entire kit comes in a nice hard-sided, folding, zip-up leather case with several elastic straps inside to secure and organize the tools. When closed, the case is about the size, weight, and shape of a decent hardcover book (9" x 6 1/4" x 1 1/2", about 1 lb. 12 oz.). All of the tools feel sturdy and appear to be of good quality.
This is an excellent tool kit for working on computers (I.e. putting together PC gaming rigs, installing components, etc.). The grippers are excellent for picking up dropped screws that have fallen down between expansion cards and the screwdriver set is very comprehensive. In particular the 6" Phillips head bit is great for reaching screws near the edge of a case that might be hard to reach with a regular screwdriver. You probably won't need the chip extractor, wire cutter, or most of the screws and sockets, but they're still good to have and an Anti-static wristband is a must-have in a decent computer tool kit. I would suggest adding a small flashlight to the kit; I found a small LED pen light that fits in the case nicely with the other tools and is great for lighting up a computer case to get a better look at a component or find a dropped screw. I wish I'd had a kit like this when I built my rig.
For electronics or circuitry work, this is a pretty good starting kit. The chip extractor is better than the one I bought for working on circuits in my electrical engineering and robotics courses at college. It can't really grip chips smaller than 8 pins, but at that point you can usually pop them out with a flat head screwdriver anyway. The wire strippers can be adjusted for use on both very small and very thick wires, and screw-set strippers like the ones in the kit are great when you need to strip several wires of the same thickness. I would recommend supplementing the kit with a few other tools if you plan on doing lots of circuitry work: hemostat clamps are great for holding components in place while soldering or for maintaining tension on wires or holding them in place; extra-long needle-nose pliers are great for gripping hard-to-reach screws and other components; a flashlight is always good to have so you can actually see what you're doing; and a small roll of electrical tape is always helpful.
Overall, this kit is well-made, sturdy, portable, and contains a good range of tools. I was particularly impressed by the inclusion of a small socket set. I'd suggest adding a small flashlight if you buy this kit, but beyond that, it's just about perfect.
I got my kit to replace an older, smaller Belkin zippered kit I've had for around 12 years. The zipper broke on the black soft case awhile ago when I took it to a friend's house to work on their computer. The anti-static wrist band fell out somewhere between the friend's house and mine and I haven't seen it since. The Rosewill 146 piece tool kit has the same anti-static wrist band I lost (vs. a useless vacuum cleaner [based on reviewers] that comes with a competitor's brand kit that looks very similar to this Rosewill). I always use an anti-static wrist band when working on a computer.
The quality of the tools seems good and should work fine for the average user. Many of the tools are very similar to the items in my old Belkin set that originally had 1/2 the components for about the same price 12 years ago. I was even able to move some of the components from the Belkin set to this new Rosewill set (extra long phillips bit, long screw driver, nuts n' bolts, etc. They just tucked in here and there).
The case is definitely beefier than the Belkin soft zippered cover I still have & have seen still being sold today.
The Rosewill case holds everything neatly & snugly, especially on the top side, with the latches...when you close the case the items do not fall out.
Overall, I do feel this Rosewill 146 piece tool set is good value.
I think some of those 45 pieces include screws, jumpers and washers. Not individual count, but one type equals one item.
There is no T-5 bit. Torx bits are 8, 10, 15, 20, 25.
Sockets go from 3/16 to 3/8.
Square bits include S0, S1, S2, S3.
All others+ are the standard bits you already have.
The anti-static wrist strap is big enough to fit my large wrists and isn't too tight. Also, the alligator clip is removable from the end of the wrist strap to reveal a ground plug prong.
The ratcheting screwdriver seems to be very good quality. I figured it would be like the ones you get in a cheap dollar store set with the little switch you have to flip. It's long enough to reach about anything inside of a case but not so long as to make it hard to get in at an angle if needed.
It includes a screw picker upper for lack of a better term. Looks like a syringe and when you push it down a little claw comes out the other end to pick up whatever. I don't know what it's really called but hopefully you will understand what I mean.
It DOES NOT include a plastic scribe, which I was hoping for.
I don't know what the large black tweezer looking thing is shown in the top right of the photo on Amazon. If anybody has any insight on that a reply with it's purpose would be helpful. Thanks.
Everything else is basically what I expected. I'm giving it 4 stars simply because there was not a detailed list of it's contents available before purchase, which would have been helpful. Though, the list wouldn't have swayed my decision, it would have been nice to know to go ahead and order a couple other little items at the same time.
It's a nice set and I recommend it.
