Achin' and Shakin'

Achin' and Shakin'

Laura Bell Bundy is first and foremost a Broadway actress who's starred in such celebrated productions as 2002's Hairspray and 2008's Legally Blonde: The Musical. But Bundy's sophomore album, Achin' and Shakin' plays with more rootsy resonance than most major-label Nashville products. "Drop On By" opens the Achin' half with the warmth of vacuum tubes glowing in the back of a vintage amplifier as toneful Telecasters pick, bend and twang over a grinding Hammond organ and retro countrypolitan choral singers while Bundy coos and croons like a young Shelby Lynne. "Curse the Bed" plays with classically melodramatic Music City divorcée balladry while the slow burning "Cigarette" salts up the beers with honky-tonk tears, courtesy of a weeping pedal steel. "Giddy On Up" kicks off the Shakin' half of the album with an uptempo boot-stomper steeped in classic country gospel. "Rebound" grooves with TNT-era Tanya Tucker inspired sass but "If You Want My Love" is the album's true standout as it pulls from the quirky, funky, country-pop stylings of "9 to 5" era Dolly Parton.
