García Abril: 6 Partitas

García Abril: 6 Partitas

Perhaps daunted by J.S. Bach’s towering creations, few composers have written substantial works for the solo violin. Enter Hilary Hahn, never one to do things by halves. The violinist has commissioned Spaniard Antón García Abril to write six solo partitas. Each has a theme, the first letter of which combines with the others to create the name “Hilary.” As with Bach’s partitas, the use of a solo violin draws us deep into a reflective inner world of many emotions. Though the musical language is clearly of our time, the violin’s natural desire to sing gives these pieces a timeless quality that Hahn brings vividly to life.
