16 Biggest Hits: Keith Whitley

Keith Whitley didn't live long enough to become a hit machine, but he was well on his way. In the year leading up to and including his tragic death from alcohol poisoning at the age of 34, Whitley scored five No. 1 hits in a row. Three of those tracks lead 16 Biggest Hits, and “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” “When You Say Nothing at All," and “I’m No Stranger to the Rain” remain some of the finest songs of '80s country music. However, Whitley’s earlier works, released before he was a big star, are just as good as the huge hits. These include “Miami, My Amy,” which showcases the delicacy of his vocals, “Turn Me to Love,” and “Would These Arms Be in Your Way,” the last of which might be the single most heartrending song Whitley ever recorded. Whitley’s last top 10 hit came in 1990 with “I’m Over You,” a brilliant single that epitomized his blend of toughness and sensitivity. Unfortunately, Whitley's legend faded as country pop stars like Garth Brooks ascended. This collection should help reaffirm Whitley’s potential and his personal brand of no-nonsense, heart-on-the-sleeve country music.
