Moreno Veloso’s first album since 2001’s Musical Typewriter once again has a luminous Brazilian lilt of bossa nova and samba with modern sonic touches coloring the background. But while that one featured his +2 bandmates (his was first of a trilogy where each member of the trio recorded an album with the other two), this time Veloso gets help from 30 musicians in nine studios around the globe. The material ranges from the spooky “La e Ca” to the jittery, acoustic guitar–driven “Um Passo a Frente” to the table samba of “Nao Acorde o Nemem,” yet there's still a cohesiveness centered on Veloso’s tuneful voice and the playful eccentricity.
