That having been said, I just got home from last night's session where we played this game and had a blast! Two of the players were new to the game, while us other two had played before. There were some struggles at first as they were learning all of the rules and mechanics, but as the game progressed they became more and more confident, building up their civilizations into technological and cultural powerhouses that gave me a run for my money! Neither of them had any Civ experience, as they hadn't played the computer games either. I imagine it would have been slightly (but not significantly) more instinctual if they had.
On that note, I am impressed by how well this game captures the feel and scale of the computer series while 1) not becoming overly complex and all about number crunching, and 2) still maintaining its own distinctiveness from the PC game to the extent that both can be played and enjoyed independently. It really gave the Sid Meier feel of building an empire from the ground up and tuning it to become a machine of cultural, technological, economical, or world domination. Best of all, it compressed this whole experience into something that can be played in an evening (I would say around 3-4 hours, more if there are new players).
There are 4 paths to victory (which is something you don't see in a lot of board games), and they all feel pretty well balanced. I would say a few of them probably take some more ingenuity than the others, so they're excellent challenges for seasoned players. The beauty of this system is twofold; the victories are both separate, so everyone who chooses a different victory path is working toward different goals, and integral, where there are places where they intersect with each other, creating fun and sometimes tense interactions. As a result, for the early and mid-game, no one is unreasonably farther ahead of anyone else in a particular aspect. For example, going for a military victory requires climbing up the tech tree at least partway to reach the stronger units, creating tension between those shooting for the military and technology victories. This is what drives the game forward. In fact, it becomes a race to see who can reach their objectives the fastest, making for exciting gameplay that actually climaxes at the end. Winning this game is a very satisfying experience.
Pros:
- Captured the feel of the PC games, but maintained its own identity
- A nice balance of strategy/luck (more weighted toward strategy)
- Depth and complexity to keep you engaged (this might be a con for some players, as it is a complex game)
- Multiple paths to victory
- Wonders and Great People which grant powerful bonuses while not being overpowered (there are some available to help with every victory type)
- Pleasing art and style
- Expansion available: Sid Meier's Civilization The Board Game: Fame and Fortune Expansion (I haven't played it, but I hear it's good) [EDIT: I liked this game so much I went out and bought the expansion, and it is incredible! It strengthens the game in its weaker areas and adds some new content, all without making the game too detailed or complex. Tons of fun!]
Cons:
- Long-ish gameplay (which, as I said, I've come to expect and enjoy)
- A bit of a learning curve
- Combat is a tad too abstracted, and really generally could use a little reworking [EDIT: After a few more games, I take it back. Combat is fun, fair, and fast-paced. We modified the rules slightly (deciding to allow players to choose which forces to attack with in each battle instead of drawing randomly), and it makes all the difference. Combat is no longer a Con.]
Overall, me and my buddies really enjoy this one. It's something that we'll be pulling off the shelf anytime we need our civilization-building fix.
This is a very unique in depth strategy board game. The rules can take a while to get to know, but the rule book does a fantastic job at explaining them. Civilization The Board Game supports up to four players, and it the game can take between 2-3 hours with two people and 3-4 hours with four people. This is a game that requires a lot of thought and strategy to play. A person can win in four ways: technology, culture, economy, and military. Depending on which victory a person chooses to pursue it can completely change the person's strategy. Another important quality this game has is that there are no dice, and hardly any luck.
Visual Appeal:
The first time you open the box to this game you will be amazed at the amount of color and artistic images that are included. There are over hundred tokens, and the civilization cards all have a great drawing of a famous leader belonging to each civilization. This game has over 10 map tiles that each have 9 squares of different land types that look very artistic and beautiful. Images are also included on all of the military cards to represent all of the unit types including infantry, artillery, calvary, and aircraft. Each of these things may not make up entirely for the great graphics and animations you will find in the civilization video game, but they do a pretty good at transferring the video game's visuals into a board game.
Accessibility:
This game is definitely not something that kids under the age of 10 could play unless if they're really smart. One of the first things I loved about this game is that there is no board. The "board" is composed of map tiles kind of like settlers of catan except each tile is square and contains 9 land types. These squares can be set up in any way you please to change the map. The rule book will give you suggestions on how to set up the map but you don't have to follow the rulebook's guidelines. This makes each game more interesting and unique from the last one.
Pros:
1.Beautiful artistic style
2.In depth strategy
3.Multiple ways to win
4.Customizable board
5.2-4 players
6.Great battle mechanism that requires more strategy then just rolling dice.
7.This game is very educational and teaches about history and ancient civilizations.
8.Excellent rule book
Cons:
1.Long game
2.People might call you a nerd for playing this game
3.Takes about 5 minutes to set up and 5 minutes to The Settlers of Catan put away
4.Small pieces that can be a choking hazzard for little kids.

Took a little time to study all the rules, which are explained well enough.
Two things - need a large table for game play and need same good idea to organise all game components (I use plastic box like fisherman use to store their stuff)
