Description

This math app can be used to teach and study the partial products multiplication method. The app is easy to use and it has an intuitive interactive interface with customizable colors and other settings.

R. Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada:

"The math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary. They also provide individualized feedback to each student, with an immediacy that is not always possible through pencil and paper practice. Being able to adjust the level of difficulty to suit their needs is also very motivating for the students. I am so glad to have come across this great educational tool!"

Z. R. Prowell, Highlands Elementary, Edina, Minnesota, USA:

"In my class I have used them to assist students with seeing the steps to properly completing multiplication operations such as partial products and partial quotients. There are students who see my examples who still need some guidance, and after using your app have said, "Now I get it." The feature of selecting possible solutions in each step helps some of my students who are still building their multiplication facts. They can gain experience in using these new concepts but not be left behind. Helping student understanding are the animations. They are smooth and really illustrate a step-by-step understanding of how to complete new styles of multiplication.”

The Partial Products Multiplication Method

The partial products multiplication method is a two-step process. In the example 39 x 24, each place value is first multiplied separately. The partial products are added and 36 + 120 + 180 + 600 produces the answer 936.

In the Everyday Mathematics curriculum the partial products method is the focus algorithm for multiplication.

The App is Easy to Use

The numbers are aligned automatically so that the user can concentrate on solving the operations for each column.

After you solve the operation for each partial product the correct answer will fly to the right place. If you press the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move.

Features:

- Each number can have from 2 to 3 digits.
- The current operation can be hidden.
- You can solve custom and random problems
- The operands of the current operation can be highlighted.
- Colors of the interface can be changed.
- The speed of the animations can be set.

If I could, I would give it -0 stars. This is a robbery, it is useless,it does not say if the result is wrong.

Helpful app

For those of us who did not use the partial product method when we learned how to multiply large numbers this app is very helpful. It helped me understand the algorithm. I was better able to explain it.

My third grade son was having some trouble "seeing" how the process worked and this app broke down the steps for him and gave him visual cues. After just one session he felt that he did not need the color cue anymore and the number prompts were enough.

It is an expensive app, but given the level of frustration over homework that has been diffused in my house it was well worth the price. My son is feeling much more confident now.

I can see this app also being very helpful in a classroom to give support to visual learners and to those who need help remembering the steps of the algorithm.
