Description

"Its high-octane play married with its no-frills, arcade game design keeps me collecting crates and blasting enemies into delightful little pieces of monster." — TouchArcade (5/5)

Vlambeer's smash hit SUPER CRATE BOX brings back the glory of the golden arcade age when all that really mattered was getting on that high score list! Grab your baseball cap and loosen your pants, it's time to fight endless hordes of enemies and collect every weapon crate you can. Prepare for an arcade delight with tight controls, refreshing game mechanics, cracking retro art and a terribly hip chiptune soundtrack.

***Supports MFi, XBox, and PlayStation Controllers***

"Supremely straightforward, criminally addictive, and easily the best retro action title I’ve ever played on iOS." - AppAdvice

You're put into a combat arena with only a basic weapon and a clear goal: collect as many crates as you possibly can. The enemies will start coming soon, and they won't ever stop. A steady supply of new weapons will be provided by the crates, but you can only hold one weapon at a time. Will the next weapon you find be better than the one you have, or worse? You may want to ride it out a little longer with a weapon you like, but your score won't move if you don't grab those crates. Super Crate Box seems like a straightforward action game, but having to adapt to your ever-changing offensive abilities means no two rounds are ever quite the same.

As you collect more crates round after round, you'll unlock new weapons that will have a chance of appearing from then on. Do particularly well in a single round, and you might unlock a new character, arena, or gameplay mode. Each new thing you uncover adds another layer to the game, creating fresh challenges and situations. The enemies continue to get stronger and faster the longer you play, so even the best player will eventually meet their end. How many crates can you claim before then?

- Endless Action: You'll never run out of enemies to blast!
- Crates Are Great: Grab a crate to get a different weapon and wreak havoc in new ways!
- Unlock Cool New Stuff: New weapons! New characters! New stages!
- Wacky Weapons: More than a dozen different ways of dealing destruction including rocket launchers, katanas, land mines, and more!
- Ambush Mode: Normal Mode not random enough for you? How about randomly appearing enemies?

Great game, needs a touch-up.

Good, fast, challenging, retro arcade gameplay.

But it needs iPhone 5 support. It's definitely playable, it's just that the display isn't as wide as the screen and the buttons are too harsh. If you just barely miss one (and I do mean barely; like, a millimeter or two), then too bad, no button press. For a hardcore gamer who's used to tactile controllers and keyboards, unforgiving on-screen buttons are agony.

Also, there's a service called "Open Feint" that the game prompts you to enable on first launch. It's supposed to be a leaderboard, but it doesn't work at all and actually seems to prevent Game Center from working. I recommend skipping it when it first appears and not opening it after (i.e., don't tap the green clock button on the main menu). After doing this, my Game Center leaderboards and achievements worked fine.

Awesome game!

My friend turned me onto this game back when I still had an iPhone 3, and have continued to play on my 5. I really enjoy just jumpin' around and blowin' up those little monsters.

Some glitchy things happen sometimes as others have mentioned, such as the grenade launcher failing to fire, or getting stuck on a ledge. Those aren't a huge deal. I've even grown accustomed to playing quite well on the 5 despite the game not filling the entire screen.

However, there is one glitch that continues to interfere with my ability to play. For some reason, on occasion the game will pause when I rapidly change direction and fire my weapon in order to save my character or clear the path. Then when I unpause, my character almost always instantly dies. It's frustrating knowing I would have been fine if the glitch hadn't occurred.

All in all, a great game! I'll continue to play despite the glitches. An update is definitely necessary, though.

Ruined

I loved this game. Bought it years ago on an old ipod touch and was really disappointed when it was never updated for ios8 (i think), so I was really excited to see it back on the app store after all this time. However, this port is atrocious. Gameclub has ruined this game with distractions, bad UI, a truly egregious subscription fee, and meaningless objectives. How are you supposed to play the game when buttons are locked in a location where your thumbs physically block the screen? Why would I want to sit through literally minutes of meaningless pop ups and social features after death when it used to be an instant restart? How come without a $25 subscription fee I’m subjected to both ads AND a 7 minute trial period? Fortunately this game should still be free on Steam, so while not portable, at least you can enjoy the game there.
