Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As a gift book with lavish pictures of quaint bears in antique settings, the Hagues' latest is a success. From the first bear to the last, the paintings are magnificently tinted and full of old world charm. But as a counting book, this is a muddle. Sometimes the bears are to be counted, sometimes they're playing or working with a set number of objects. For the young reader, it might be hard to pick out the four blue eggs in one picture, or the six shells in another, or the 10 clouds that look like fluffy lambs. The artist has hidden Roman numerals in the illustrations to tip off the reader, yet even some of these are difficult to find at first. While the text is lackluster, it does help ascertain what is being counted by which bear. Much work and care went into the creation and design of this book, but one is left wishing that author and artist had taken steps to make this the knock-out counting book it deserved to be.

I needed a baby shower gift for my niece and I have always loved and collected bears. I first became acquainted with this book and other Michael Hague works when I began purchasing books for my daughter, 24 years ago! I just loved Michael Hague's whimsical, non-cartoonish style. When I started putting together an idea for my niece's baby shower, I naturally went with a bear theme. I got her all the Hague Bear books I could find - all books I'd read to my daughter when she was a child. My niece was delighted with her baby-to-be's LI-"BEAR"-Y and I had such fun finding the books and giving them to her.

Delightful to look at, delightful to hold, but when I read the blurb, We had to mark it "Sold" ! a children's book - naturally... how can you go wrong? WE grew up with Grimm's fairy tales and other things we though were benign, but seeing them remade into movies and different venues, they weren't so innocent, were they? lol - These, today, were written by younger folk, who have broken the old habits we had of Snow White and Rumpelstiltskin... Can't go wrong with these books.. seriously.

This age group needs to be entertained - the book is too wordy for a three year old, maybe okay for a little older child.

Kathleen Hague's prose and her husband's illustrations are awesome. Great books for children of all ages.
