They come fresh or dry, in yellow or purple, from California and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries. They are in restaurants, supermarkets, fruit stands, backyards, and inside some very famous cookies. What are they? They're figs -- one of America's favorite fruits.

From Mission and Kadota figs to Adriatic and Calimyrna varieties, award-winning cookbook author Marie Simmons leaves no fig or fig leaf unturned in this extraordinary book about this most extraordinary fruit: Fig Heaven.

Figs are harvested in late summer and early fall, but, fortunately for us, they are easily dried and packaged, so they're available all year long. Packed with vitamins and antioxidants, plump, fragrant figs are guilt-free indulgences that can be enjoyed in countless ways.

Fig Heaven is an inviting, comprehensive cookbook offering 70 recipes for both fresh and dried figs. They range from appetizers, salads, and sandwiches to entrées and desserts.

On the savory side, you'll find Open-Faced Dried Fig and Melted Blue Cheese Sandwiches; Fettuccine with Fresh Figs, Lemon, and Rosemary; and Lamb Pilaf with Artichokes and Dried Figs. If your sweet tooth needs some real satisfaction, there's a Fresh Fig and Peach Crumble, Dried Fig and Walnut Biscotti, and Molten Chocolate Roasted Figs with Vanilla Custard Sauce.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Most Americans recognize figs only from the thick, sweet, gummy filling of mass-produced cookies. But anyone who has relished the honeyed interior of a perfectly ripe fresh fig understands why the ancients so prized this fruit. Nowadays green and black fresh figs appear seasonally in supermarkets. Simmons recognizes that the prime time for fresh figs is brief, so her book includes recipes for both fresh and dried varieties in her compilation of fig recipes. Appetizer ideas include the ubiquitous figs with prosciutto, but then go beyond that to such savories as crostini with fig jam and goat cheese, and bacon-wrapped figs first poached in wine. In main dishes, figs serve as a sweet note in spicy curries or as star of a very contemporary salsa. Few desserts surpass the elegant spectacle of a fresh fig tart, the glazed split fruits sparkling like jewels within a sea of pastry cream. And for those nostalgic for the commercial stuffed cookie, Simmons explains how to make superlative Fig Newtons at home. Color illustrations contribute both beauty and utility. Mark Knoblauch

Book arrived in fine condition, even wrapped in plastic. However it was advertised as new and while the book was in fine condition, there was a piece of scrap note paper in one of the pages with some notes on both sides. See pictures.Obviously this book had been opened and looked at before it was sealed up and sent to me.

After buying a house with a large fig tree in the winter, my wife and I were astounded to see the size of the crop that appeared come the summer. So what do you do after you've begged all of your friends to come over and take bags of figs home, made fig-strawberry jam, eaten figs with cheese until you can't any more, and still have piles on the tree and higher piles on the ground? You run out and buy the Fig Heaven cookbook of course! With 70 excellent recipes, you will surely find many an excellent idea, from fig pinenut pasta to fig, green tomato, purple onion salad. Of course, you will still have enough figs so that your friends can take home all they want, but you will also fill your summer table with delectable dishes!

This focused book provides clear, easy-to-follow recipes that really show off the wonderful flavor of figs. There's a variety of recipes - appetizers, salads, savory entrees, sweet desserts. Everything we've tried so far has been great! There is also an interesting introduction about the history, botany and cultivation of figs and a list of the many varieties. If, like me you love figs, I strongly recommend this book. We recently purchased a second copy for a friend who has a fig tree and never knew how to use all the fruit. Now she does!

Marie Simmons has created a beautiful homage to the lowly FIG, and takes us to heaven with 70 creative lovesongs of recipes using the fig. From homemade fig newtons to figs in rice and with quinoa, who knew there was so much to do with the fig? Because we are blessed with 2 figs in our backyard, the book provided instructions for a new passion: cooking with figs! Heavenly, indeed!

Have a fig tree three years old now and it has grown so quickly. This year I made peach fig preserves (similar to the strawberry jello one) and it was more than wonderful. Never knew that figs could be used in so many ways. The Fig Heaven book helped to open my eyes to see that the old fig tree is on its way back. You open any new magazine with recipes and you will find a fig recipe in there . Trying a fig cake this afternoon and cant wait to see how my friends like it at a tea party.

This is a luscious book. We moved to a new home and there's a fig tree in my backyard. I've never eaten fig outside of a newton, but I like newtons, so I "fig"ured I should learn about Figs! Besides lots of amazing recipes (like grilling figs!) there's lots of fig information, background, history, etc. that makes me really glad I've got a fig tree and even gladder I found this book. As of this writing, my first fig crop has yet to ripen....oh do hurry, I can't wait to put this book to work!

Purchased this for a dear friend of mine who adores figs. In fact, when we go for our daily walks, she liberates them from neighborhood trees and eats them as we walk. The book made a very nice gift, the pictures are beautiful, and the pages are not thin but rather there is a nice, luxe feel in your hand. She was truly pleased with my gift and I was happy to give this beautiful book to my fig-loving/liberating friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, abundant and easy to make
Reviewed in Germany on August 7, 2004
Returning from our holidays, I found our fig tree (which had formerly yielded about 5 figs per year) carrying more than 12 pounds ripe fruit. The fig is not a common fruit in Germany, rarely grown here and expensive to buy. So German cook books and also the internet did not provide me with adequate information how to deal with this overabundance - and I was expecting the second harvest, too! Browsing Amazon's website I discovered Marie Simmons's book and ordered it immediately.
First, Simmons offers lots of interesting information about the fig in general and its "history". The recipes are from the categories "Appetizers", "Sandwiches, Breads, and Salads", "Main Courses and Side Dishes", "Sweets", and "Preserving Fresh Figs". The dishes consist mostly of everyday ingredients which you can get in any supermarket. It is amazing how delicious their combination with the figs turns out. The procedure of preparing the dishes is well described, so less experienced cooks will have no difficulties in following the rather detailed instructions. And the tastes of the dishes cover such a wide range that offering at least two fig dishes per week to my family has not bored them yet.
The index is well made, displaying not only the names of the dishes, but also the ingredients, so you can easily find out in which recipes prosciutto or your favorite cheese is used.
There is also a list of fig sources - in the U.S., of course - and the addresses of two gardening websites which deal with figs. I also like the personal episodes about figs included in the book.
I can only recommend this book, it offered me all the help I needed, and the layout including several pages with colored photographs of some of the dishes is attractive. The only fact I might critize was that there are only two fig jam recipes. I could have done with a few more.
P.S.: Please excuse my faulty foreigner's English.
