What will it take to solve the biggest issues of our time: extreme and needless poverty, global warming and environmental degradation, terrorism and the endless cycle of violence, racism, human trafficking, health care and education, and other pressing problems? While Washington offers only the politics of blame and fear, Jim Wallis, the man who changed the conversation about faith and politics, has traveled the country and found a nation hungry for a politics of solutions and hope. He shows us that a revival is happening, as people of faith and moral conviction seek common ground for change.

Wallis also reminds us that religious faith was a driving force behind our greatest national reforms, such as the abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement. These "great awakenings" happened periodically at crucial times in our nation's history to propel us toward the common good. The time is ripe for another movement that will transform this country. With The Great Awakening, Wallis helps us rediscover our moral center and provides both the needed inspiration and a concrete plan to hold politics accountable and find solutions to our greatest challenges.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Recognizing that America's faithful have subverted their evangelical Christian ideology into a conservative political ideology, Wallis reminds readers that to follow the spirit of Christianity truly does mean to go beyond the simple two-party system and understand the greater principles of the faith. Wallis assesses the wide range of movements and new ideas emerging from Christians and what this new reckoning within their hearts and minds means for the political realm. With tools and goals that help listeners achieve spirituality over ideology, Wallis reveals the common ground upon which faith in America can be rebuilt and opened to a larger group of discontented believers. At a slow, deliberate pace, Wallis narrates with an elderly but genuinely sincere voice. A few voice shifts hint at poor sound editing, but the clarity and crisp voice of Wallis still shines through. However, his tone can be a bit droll, and it seems to move forward with almost languid reluctance. He performs a few vocal impersonations quite well, but often in doing so, only reinforces his overall weak performance in the straight narration.

This book gives the best treatment I have seen of how both religious believers and politicians are regaining the proper focus on the true problems of the day - such as global poverty and AIDS, racial reconciliation, environmental destruction, the plight of women in the developing world, and related problems. Evangelicals and others are beginning to realize that such things are far more important, and more aligned with true religion, that judgmental debates over homosexuality and the right to birth (a more accurate term than right to life). Conversely, politicians are realizing that freedom of religion does not mean religious principles of our leaders are irrelevant; they have been a major factor influencing decisions throughout our history as a nation.

Jim Wallace continues writing for people like me......... self identified "red letter christians". The Great Awakening is an insight toward the path that we can choose if we believe that there is no separation between our belief and our lifestyle. Wallace discusses a moral center, a focal point where the common good outweighs the corporate good, a viewpoint where the Great Commandment drives not only our willingness to contribute toward the local food bank, but also identifies those who we will elect to places of political power. The Great Awakening is a call to a new spiritual and social revival.

The Great Awakening is the companion and follow up to God's Politics in which Jim Wallis calls for a new sort of politics among Christians, which emphasizes not just a few hot button issues, but rather a policy that addresses the many life threatening issues that we are facing in our world today.

This book echoes the message of God's Politics, and calls Christians to a new awakening. Wallis is passionate about both Christianity and politics and both shines is this book. Wallis grounds his book in the understanding that the message of Jesus is inherently political; divorcing his message from political undertones strips the message of the gospels of their power. Wallis consistently appeals to the themes of the Kingdom of God, and justice as key characteristics of the message of Jesus. These themes are to be understood by the church as the foundation for Christian's action in the world.

Wallis continues his book by addressing several hot button issues including racial diversity, a consistent ethic of life, family values, responsible stewardship of creation, and peace. At every turn Wallis calls forth Christians to think and act in a Christian way. For too long Christian politics have been co-opted by the Religious Right, something Wallis continually critiques because of their narrow focus on issues, and blatant disregard for others which Wallis considers to be essential.

The Great Awakening calls Christians to further action, and points to a new way forward. It calls Christians to truly love their neighbor, to fight against the continued racial boundaries that constrain many in America. Wallis pleads with Christians to consider their stewardship over God's good creation, and our responsibility to care for what God has left us stewards over.

A consistent ethic of life includes not only support for pro-life legislation, but must be expanded from the cradle to the grave. 30,000 people will die today from preventable diseases, a fact which is often lost on Christian conservatives who focus their sole attention on abortion. A holistic Christian is one who fights for the unborn; while at the same time joins the battle to provide medical help for those who so desperately need it.

As with any book, the author does not come to the table without presuppositions, and biases. Wallis is no different. If there is a weakness to his book, it is the perceived hubris that at times comes across in his writing. While the Religious Right certainly damaged both politics, and Christians understanding about their responsibility in the political world, they are not the pariahs that Wallis seems to make them out to be. At times the constant criticism of only one side of the coin makes the book somewhat less believable, and reminds the reader of the constant partisan politics which Washington so frequently falls into, thereby rendering them unable to pass legislation which would make a significant impact on our world.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in a new way forward in politics, Christian or not, this book will be helpful for any reader, and lead them to a greater understanding of the issues which we must be concerned about, and the issues that we must address.

If you are interested in the role of faith and politics, this is a must-read before the next election. It doesn't preach ... it reminds us that faith SHOULD influence our social action. While I'm not sure I see the religious right quite so silenced as Rev. Wallis, the surge in presence of other religious persons, accross religious lines, is an encouragement.

Read it. Show it to your friends. Bring it to your place of worship and encourage others to social justice, peace, and faith.

Looking for practical ways to contribute somehow to problems of poverty, war and social justice, I purchased this book knowing of Jim Wallis's Sojourners organization. I was not disappointed. His take on what is happening now to restore grassroots action to our political system is inspiring! He bases his message on past events, and he makes a solid case for our ability to change the direction of this nation toward a more peaceful, equitable climate.

I borrowed this book from our local library but found that I wanted a copy around to remind myself of what we all should be working towards: not just rhetoric about anti-abortion, but how to make fewer abortions reality. Not just condemning people for being poor, but helping create a better society that makes all grow rich.

By far the most worthless writing I've come across this year. I suspected Jim Wallis to be a left-wing liberal just knowing the forward was from former President Jimmy Carter. But, I gave him the benefit of the doubt believing even a liberal has the capacity to produce some genuine history from time to time. Unfortunately, I was greatly disappointed. I didn't think anyone could be so inept at handling the history, philosophy, and theology of the Great Awakenings. In that, the author must have been delirious from fever while doing his research or he was clearly disillusioned in his interpretation of these historic events. So readers beware if you're looking for revisionist history with a progressive liberal agenda this is your book. But, if you're looking for factual history about the Christian Great Awakenings in the U.S. look somewhere else.

I believe that Christians should both worship and follow Jesus in their lives, as following the teachings of Jesus is the only solution to the mess the world is in today and to actualise the coming of God's Peaceable Kingdom. This book should be read by all open minded Christians who believe there faith can be instrumental in establishing a socially equal, violence free world, not only for humankind but for all of God's Creation.
