In mid-seventh-century Ireland, Sister Fidelma of Cashel-sister to the King of Muman, an advocate of Brehon Courts, and religieuse of the Celtic Church-returns hastily from a pilgrimage to the Shrine of St. James. The news that brings her back is that her companion and friend, the Saxon monk Brother Eadulf, is under arrest for a serious crime in the neighboring kingdom of Laigin. Riding furiously through hostile territory, she arrives only to find out she is too late. Eadulf has already been tried and found guilty of the murder of a young girl. Even worse, Laigin's king has abandoned the traditional judicial code of Ireland in favor of the ecclesiastical Penitential from Rome-and under this code he is to be executed the following morning.

Convinced that her friend is innocent, Fidelma has only twenty-four hours before his execution to come up with evidence persuasive enough to sway the king into allowing an appeal of Eadulf's conviction. Facing a king determined to make an example of Eadulf and an old adversary of her own, Fidelma soon realizes that nothing is as it was portrayed, and behind the heinous crime is an even more shocking conspiracy. Now, Fidelma must unravel her most perplexing puzzle before time runs out for her closest companion.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Our Lady of Darkness: A Celtic Mystery, by British author Peter Tremayne (the pseudonym of Celtic historian Peter Berresford Ellis), Roman Penitential law and traditional Irish law come into conflict as Sister Fidelma finds herself defending her good friend, Saxon monk Brother Eadulf, from a rape and murder charge. This is another solid installment in this well-established medieval series.

I always like reading historical mysteries, especially those set in the Middle Ages or ancient times. I have finished reading Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael and may start on Sister Fidelma. I was amazed to learn that women had such a broad range of freedom in Ancient Ireland. I will probably read these books online Whispersync because I have difficulty pronouncing the Irish names and terms.

The “nick of time ending” caught me off guard. I had to stop reading and laugh and cry at the same time. Later, the twists and turns in the plot made me completely forget about the saving grace. — I’m not a lover of romance fiction. I prefer mysteries without all that kissy-face stuff, so Tremayne’s ability to insert just enough—and not too much—romance to keep me hooked and not repelled is JUST PLAIN FUN!
(And, yes, I laughed and cried at Fidelma’s final decision! Shake your head at the hard-hearted romantic that still resides in me, ... and smile with me that hearts can still be warmed by a good writer’s talent.)

Our Lady of Darkness is the ninth novel in the Sister Fidelma series. Sister Fidelma of Cashel, a town in Ireland, lived in the seventh century A.D. Although most of Europe was suffering the Dark Ages, Ireland was a progressive land where gender discrimination was rare. In Ireland any citizen could aspire to any profession. Sister is a very talented and accomplished woman. Fidlema has a graduate education where she earned the degree of anruth, similar to a masters degree today. Fidelma works as a dalaigh, an advocate in the courts. As an advocate she investigates problems and crimes and advises both church and civil authorities. A dalaigh may prosecute, defend, or even serve as judge in a criminal proceeding.

This story begins when Sister Fidelma returns from a "retreat" to a shrine of Saint James in Iberia. Sister abandons her retreat because she hears that Brother Eadulf, her close friend, has been arrested for a serious crime. Fidelma rushes to Fearna, where Eadulf is imprisoned, in hopes of defending him. Fearna is the capital city of Laigin, an enemy of Cashel. Although Fidlema is a dalaigh, with status in all of Ireland, several high officials in Fearna dislike her due to previous cases she won against Laigin's interests.

When Sister arrives, she discovers that Eadulf has already been tried and convicted. She learns he is sentenced to hang very soon. So Fidelma persuades Fianamail, the King of Laigin, to delay execution of sentence so that she might investigate whether there are grounds for appeal. The King gives her 24 hours.

Sister first learns that the Kingdom of Laigin has changed their law from the laws of the Brehons, the common law of Ireland, to the "penitentials", the law being advocated by the church of Rome. While the Brehon laws seldom call for capital punishment, the penitentials frequently assign death as a punishment for felony crime. Eadulf is accused of a serious felony, the rape and murder of a 12 year old girl. Fidelma immediately sends Aidan, one of her guards, to Tara, the city of the High King to request that Barran, the Chief Brehon of all Ireland, come to judge her appeal.

The investigation is wrought with difficulties. The primary witness has disappeared, the victim's blood and a piece of the victims robe were found in Eadulf's room. Four officials oppose Fidelma's efforts: the King, Abbess Fainder, Abbot Noe, and Bishop Forbassach, the Chief Brehon of Laigin. Could one of them have plotted against Eadulf out of vengeance against Fidelma? Could Eadulf have been framed by one of the merchants or town people to remove themself as a suspect. Could a foreign force be involved? Fidelma struggles to even imagine a motive for falsely accusing Eadulf, since he probably was, to the people of Fearna, simply a traveler making his way to Britain.

Fidelma struggles to find her way through a maze of information, much of it contradictory and some of it disproving her case. Several times during Sister's labors she encounters threats to her career, her freedom, and her life. The information Fidelma receives is confusing

Our Lady of Darkness is a fun mystery. The characters are well drawn and their emotions, intentions, and personalities are vivid and vital. The plot is full of suspense and political intrigue. I enjoyed this novel, it is a very entertaining book.

This is one of a series of Sister Fidelma mysteries. My husband and I have already read the first 7 in the series and intend to continue. The mysteries are interesting and suspense filled. Besides being good mysteries, we love them for the insight into the ancient times in Ireland. The stories are set in the mid 600's when Christianity was spreading in Ireland and of the struggle between the old ways and the new. The heroine is a Irish princess who has become a religious and well educated representative of the Irish courts of law who is charged with investigating murders for the court. There is a romantic friendship that is followed between Sister Fidelma and an Saxon cleric of high rank. Each book is unique with new locations, new plots, new insights and adventures. You could read anyone of them alone and enjoy it. We started on #4 and went back to the beginning. Reading them in sequence expands the enjoyment because the reader is building a knowledge and understanding about the times and characters giving each book more depth.

At the end of the last novel, we see that Eadulf has been arrested for murder. This book begins with Fidelma arriving on the scene some few weeks later to find Eadulf condemned to hang for raping and killing a young girl in the unfriendly kingdom of the tempestuous king from Suffer Little Children, no love lost between the king and his advisers for Fidelma. Fidelma uncovers dark forces at work in the framing of her friend. Finally by the end some progress is happening on Fidelma and Eadulf recognizing that the feeling is mutual. As for the mystery I missed a big conclusion even though I had all the little pieces - this is usual for this series with me.

Oooh, Poor Brother Eadulf!! The poor man! The situation just seems to get worse and worse! This is about all I'll say about this book, the villains are properly villainous, you wonder how on earth they're going to get out of this let alone solve the mystery and that bó-aire's entrance had me cheering for him. Me, I liked this book a ton.

Another in the series, can't wait for the next one. Sometimes Tremayne is redundant in repeating explanations of the life, times in Ireland in the ninth century in book after book.

Read this book in 2009, and its the 11th volume, chronologically, of the wonderful "Sister Fidelma" series.

After arriving home from her pilgrimage, Sister Fidelma is told about that her Saxon companion, Brother Eadulf, is under a sentence of death.

She hurries over to the capital of Laigin where Brother Eadulf is held, and there she will meet resistance from the King of Laigin, as well as from the sinister Abbess Fainder from the Abbey of Fearna.

At this Abbey of Fearna should the crime have been committed, and although Sister Fidelma believes in Eadulf's innocence, she has little time for the King of Laigin wants to make an example of Eadulf and hang him.

What is to follow is an intriguing and thrilling Irish mystery, in which by using her wits and determination, Sister Fidelma will after sifting the evidence, and after some twists and turns, followed by a superbly executed plot be able to reveal the real culprit of this heinous murder.

Highly recommended, for this is another tremendous addition to this amazing series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "A Fantastic Lady Of Darkness"!
