Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The title of this quiet, absorbing suspense novel by a Danish author only suggests the intriguing story it tells. After young Isaiah Christiansen falls from a snow-covered roof in present-day Copenhagen, something about his lone rooftop tracks--and the fact that the boy had a fear of heights--obsesses Smilla Qaavigaaq Jaspersen, a woman who had befriended him. Smilla is 37, unmarried, and, like Isaiah, part of Denmark's small Eskimo/Greenlander community. She is also a minor Danish authority on the properties and classification of ice. Her search for what had frightened the boy leads her to uncover information about his father's mysterious death on a secret expedition to Greenland, a mission funded by a powerful Danish corporation involved in a strange conspiracy stretching back to WW II. As related in Smilla's sober, no-nonsense narration, the plot acquires credibility even as its details become more bizarre. While the novel will probably be compared to Gorky Park , Hoeg has much more to offer, both in terms of his impeccable literary style and in the glimpses he provides of an utterly foreign culture. Its chief virtue, however, is the narrator: Smilla is never less than believable in her contradictions--caustic, caring, thoughtful, impulsive, determined and above all, rebellious. Smoothly translated by Nunnally, this is Hoeg's third novel, but the first to appear in English. A dark, taut, compelling story, it's a real find. 40,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; BOMC selection.

From School Library Journal

YA-A compelling and suspenseful adventure about a solitary 37-year-old Greenlander, an unemployed glaciologist who lives in Copenhagen. Smilla Jaspersen is caught between the pull of her Inuit roots and the restrictions and demands of the modern industrial world. The story begins when her six-year-old neighbor falls from a snow-covered roof, and it is declared an accidental death. She and the boy were close friends, and she was keenly aware of his abnormal fear of heights. This, together with her keen Inuit understanding of snow, causes her to doubt that it was an accident. When she questions the local authorities they are not interested, and she begins to make inquiries on her own. Her investigation takes her from shipyards, corporate headquarters, and the dark back streets of the Danish capital to a secretive voyage along the icy Greenland coast. Mysterious characters, violent encounters, and an intriguing puzzle propel the story along. The final scenes rapidly accelerate in action and suspense. It's a rare thriller that has such a strong, fascinating female protagonist, but this book also excels in story and characterization. It's a winner.

I just finished re-reading 'Smilla's Sence of Snow', after first reading it about 30 years ago when it was first published. This book has always captivated me and has led me to become something of an Arctic-ophile. Any fictional book set in the Arctic (or Antarctic) is one that I need to read, and I attribute much of it to Smilla.

This is a difficult book to read. I took my time, and was often searching backward (thank you, Kindle) to refresh my memory on a character. It's a complicated story with (some would say) an unsatisfying ending. But I love Smilla. Her humanity, her awkwardness, her intelligence, her tenacity. I'm so happy for having acquainted myself with her again, and I won't wait so long to re-read this book next time.

I've counted six authors to whose prose Hoeg's has been compared, just in reading the first page of reviews here. They are all, to a one, terrible comparisons. The one I expected and, inexorably, found, was the comparison to Hemingway. This is because the prose is genuinely hard-hitting. But Hemingway's is not so. Hemingway's prose is studiedly hard-hitting. In other words, Hemingway's prose is a sham. Smilia, as narrator, is anything but a Hemingway character, standing aside watching bullfights with sadistic pleasure. Hoeg/Smilia is like the polar bear Smilia describes as being the only animal that does no grow tense with the rigor of the flight/fright reaction because it has never had any natural enemies. So you don't expect the punches when they land, as you do with Hemingway. The first droll punch is landed at the beginning of chapter Three, "It's the kind of day that might make you wonder about the meaning of life, and discover that there is none." Nice. And, lest you let your guard down, another roundhouse is delivered unexpectedly several pages later as Smilia describes her relation with her father, "And the mood he brought with him, which was the sum of the feelings he had for my mother; The same kind of soothing warmth that you might expect to find in a nuclear reactor." Another nice one, Smilia. These nice jabs are in the first hundred pages in the first, and best, part of the book, The City, where Hoeg has Smilia as narrator pull off the impressive feat of giving you the background of her life while weaving her way through a maze of questions and emotions.

On the other hand, Hoeg is no Conrad. Smilia's introspective musings have their limits and limitations. By the second part, The Sea, one begins to become bored with Smilia's shipmates attempting to toss her into the drink every few pages, inevitably overcome, of course, by Smilia's omnicompetence at getting herself out of each and every scrape with a display of a new set of skills. As for the ending, about which many here complain, I would have been sorely disappointed had Hoeg NOT left us in limbo. But people (Amazon reviewers included) prefer Hollywood endings. Thus the frustration vented here.

There are any number of Smilia's musings which I could set down here. They add spice and nuance to what would otherwise be a typical taut, suspense thriller. While not exactly an intellectual, Smilia is nothing if not cerebral. And readers who prefer not to think best look elsewhere. But I can't quote them all. I think the most indicative cerebration, the one that summarises Smilia's outlook and perspective throughout the book, her constant challenging of the reader and herself is the following:

"Deep inside I know that trying to figure things out leads to blindness, that the desire to understand has a built-in brutality that erases what you seek to comprehend. Only experience is sensitive."

I had fun reading this book, rolling with the punches, learning much about natural phenomena and the worlds of Greenland and Denmark. But I don't feel particularly enlightened after putting it down. It's better than the pseudo-literary: Hemingway. But it's not a work of art: Conrad.

Still, a very enjoyable read - especially the first section - with fast, at times splendid prose that is deft on its feet. Recommended for all those who love this sort of thing, are equipped with minds and aren't afraid of descriptions of parasitic worms.

I remember this book getting a lot of attention when it was published. I read about 2/3 of it and gave up. There is indeed a mystery but by then I didn’t care; I was sick of the main characters.

The movie Smilla's Snow is beautifully done, but it cannot compare to or include the book's many insights and finely tuned details--which are the elements that make this book a masterpiece. It is a smart and engaging read which I powered through in only a few sittings. It's a keeper and goes into my 're-read' pile.

This story has an epic buildup. In the meantime, I learned many scientific ideas about snow and glaciers, and I have to admit some of it was over my head. The story has many twists and turns, and it's characters are mostly well deve!oped. The protagonist, Smilla, an accomplished scientist, is trapped between her Greenland Inuit upbringing and the urban Copenhagen culture and lifestyle, where she ultimately settles. Greenland keeps tugging at her. In Denmark, life is relatively comfortable. In Greenland, survival is based on knowledge of the ways of the Inuit and survival requires effort and ingenuity. Skills makes use of these, in addition to her science background, to solve a complex mystery in a harsh environment West of Greenland. The movie could not possibly match this.

I would have to say, however, that the ending was rather blunt and, in fact, suggested the possibility of a Smilla part 2. Since this has not happened in nearly 30 years, I will not be holding my breath.

This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. A fascinating study of life in Greenland, and the friction between it and Denmark. Miss Smilla is a stunning character - determined and self-sufficient. I would highly recommend 😉

This is a book written several decades ago but endures because of its excellence. The writing is evocative and original. It was also terrific to get some insight into Greenland’s plight in the 60’s. A great mystery that keeps you turning the pages with enthusiasm from start to finish.
