The Passionate Eye: The Collected Writing of Suzanne Vega Hardcover – February 9, 1999

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 53 ratings

An internationally respected composer and performer, Suzanne Vega does not write love songs, per se. Her words can rattle and sting, exposing private crimes and inner wars, the pain of need, and the chains of unspoken law. With evocative image and clear-sighted truth she transforms experience into dark and beautiful art. She is a poet of the urban streets whose passionate eye catches the motion and vibrant color of the life that surrounds us all.In this volume are collected the writings of Suzanne Vega: poems and stories: remembrances of times past and far countries: interviews and song lyrics: overheard conversations and imagined thoughts: complex inner worlds realized in simple yet breathtaking strokes. And through her words a portrait emerges of an exemplary artist and unique individual whose passion embraces the entire scope of human existence, from love and longing to war and politics. It is a window into a guarded life, and a remarkable journey across an emotional landscape sometimes hard, often cruel, but never barren or devoid of hope.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Catapulted into the limelight after her song about an abused child, "Luka," hit the airwaves in 1987, Suzanne Vega has become the minimalist poet of popular music. With five albums and a recent greatest hits collection behind her, the artist has put together a medley of writings spanning a 30-year period that provide an engaging counterpoint to her spare lyrics, many of them also reprinted here. Vega has chosen to organize the material thematically rather than chronologically, a tactic highlighting the motifs she has pursued since childhood: solitude, desire, war and "the stuff that you knew too early that you shouldn't have known." Like her music, Vega's prose is studded with precise images that prove her a keen observer of the world around her: for instance, in "Plain," she writes, "I am nothing more/ Than grain in the wood/ And rust on steel./ A town you went through once/ Then forgot./ A girl on a step." While this cascade of images is Vega's signature style, the collection's longer pieces flesh out the experiences that inspired her lyrics: selections from Vega's journal, an interview conducted by Leonard Cohen and the tender "Hunger Strike," which shows a young woman dealing with lost love by abusing her body. Although this volume will speak strongest to longtime fans of Vega's music, there is a poignant mixture of toughness and fragility in Vega's work that will resonate even with readers who've never heard her sing. Major ad/promo.

From Library Journal

This collection of song lyrics, poems, essays, and personal anecdotes may unveil Vega's unique artistry for the first time to those who are unfamiliar with her music. But those who have long been aware of her musical gifts will not find any surprises here. Vega still delivers the same passion for diminutive detail in the same simple way, intermingled with the same grace. Engaging in themes that encompass childhood innocence, adulthood insecurities, and everything in between, Vega unreservedly speaks of some of the most intimate moments of her life. Although in some cases she selflessly unfolds hitherto unseen layers of her personality, she still keeps that familiar distance?as if she were allowing the reader to get closer only as long as her shelter is unthreatened. With this delicate yet broad-minded collection, Vega proves that her lyrics can be flowingly transformed into poetry that conveys both thoughtfulness and wit. Strongly recommended for large music and poetry collections.

Enjoyed reading Suzanne’s poetry and writing. I lived in New York City during the 80s and 90s and I played “Days of Open Hand” over and over. Reminiscent of that time.

It's worthwhile to have so many of Vega's lyrics in one place, but the book really shines when she tells stories or presents excerpts from her journals.

This is a wonderful book of poetry and creative thought and I highly recommend supporting this artist's work. Suzanne Vega is a talented musician, but much of her poetry is missed if you limit yourself to her musical expressions alone.

This is a wonderful book for any Suzanne Vega fan. Lots of lyrics intermixed with pictures, drawings and stories. Great stuff.

The interview with Leonard Cohen alone is by far worth every penny I chose to spend on this book. I love Leonard Cohen... to see these two artists interacting and conflicting in a dialogue on a printed page was FANTASTIC. The rest of the book is a little harder to warm up to... although die-hard fans will cherish every window into Suzanne's head and heart.

She is not what I expected.

One of the ways I prepared for a recent meeting / informal interview with Suzanne Vega was by reading this book.
One of my initial questions (for the past 30 years) had been what is the song "Luka" all about?
It just rings with too much resonance for me that "are none of your business anyway".

So I read the book and it occurred to me that part of Ms Vega's glamour is the mystery. Her use of small words that cast long shadows is fascinating. And I no longer wanted to know about "Luka". To know would mean I could be potentially hurting the owner of a Schrondinger's Cat, whose 2 lives are somehow secretly intertwined, and the owner would somehow be damaged when the box is opened even if the cat lives and the secret is revealed.

Reading the book led me to other questions, some of which made her laugh.

My advice to anyone so lucky as to interview Ms Vega: do your homework first, bring her an appropriate presentation of flowers (dumb luck on my part there, figuring that bit out) and smart questions, and listen... because she talks quietly. And you may hear an amazing blend of sweetness + intelligence + funny.

Habitué à la chanteuse et à ses texte depuis les années 80, il y a une autre face. Lecture pour personne prévenue.
