Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen by Lauren Kate is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 8 Up—Luce must spend her senior year at reform school after her boyfriend dies in a mysterious fire. She suspects that the dark shadows that have tormented her all her life had something to do with it. When she meets supernaturally gorgeous Daniel, she feels a familiar longing, making her believe they have met before. Although Cam is clearly interested in her, Luce only wants Daniel, who runs both hot and cold. He tries to keep Luce at a distance, telling her that the truth would kill her as it has many times before. The first chapter is gripping and foreshadows the supernatural elements to come. The plot revolves around lovers who find one another, only to lose one another over and over again in a story that spans centuries. Instead of vampires, though, these are fallen angels. Many elements are not resolved, such as the cause of the fire and why angels are at this school. Still, fans of supernatural romance will be lining up for this book despite its flaws, and begging for a sequel.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH

From Booklist

Fallen angels sure seem poised to become the new vampires, with a similarly ideal blend of brooding mystery and sexy rebellion. After a fiery accident kills a boy she is crushing on, Luce gets sent to a reform school populated, most notably, by two gorgeous fellas, Daniel and Cam. Cam is safe and charming and eager to win Luce’s affections, while Daniel operates somewhere between aloof and downright hostile toward her. Readers will figure out Luce and Daniel’s star-crossed-lovers angle early on, making the hints dropped throughout about past lives and dangerous fates more obvious than compelling. Although there’s not enough story to justify the length of this series opener, readers who stick with it get rewarded with a climactic payoff that far exceeds the buildup. The final pages’ flurry of delicious information about what’s really going on with the cadre of angels and demons will likely leave readers more intrigued by what’s next than invested in what just happened. Perhaps the sequel will contain an explanation of what these immortal types are doing at a reform school in the first place. Grades 9-12. --Ian Chipman

Fallen is the story of seventeen year old Lucinda (or Luce as she is known) a girl with a normal life until she's a suspect in her boyfriends mysterious, fiery death. Because of this, she is sent to Sword & Cross, a run down, intimidating reform school.

As soon as she arrives, we meet plenty of new characters. There's Arriane, the bad ass punk chick, who may or may not be trustworthy, there's Cam, good looking and desperate to be Luce's boyfriend, and most importantly, there's Daniel Grigiori. The minute Luce lays her eyes on Daniel, she gets the strangest feeling like they've met before. . .

This is elaborated wonderfully throughout each chapter, giving us little clues one by one to keep us guessing why Luce and Daniel are drawn together.

She falls in love with the good-looking and highly intelligent Daniel, but soon discovers that he is a fallen angel, cursed, and destined neither to ascend to Heaven nor descend to Hell. The two realize that they have spent their lifetimes finding and losing one another, and face the final challenge to keep evil forces at bay and seek redemption for all.

Luce herself is overall a nice girl, she is a teenager and she talks and behaves like a teenager. Although she may not be to everyone's taste, readers of the same age will connect with Luce and very quickly find themselves falling completely under the book's spell. There are times that Luce was a little dense, but then she would do something unexpected and feisty to make her warm to me even more. I have a feeling that as the series progresses, she will develop and become stronger, sassier and a compassionate female lead.

The setting of this story, is delightfully gothic, the highlight being the church that has been turned into a natatorium. The excerpt below shows Luce's first impressions when encountering this wonderful creation:

"Inside the humid natatorium she instantly understood what Penn was talking about. The pool itself was giant, Olympic-sized, one of the few state-of-the-art features she'd encountered so far on this campus. But that wasn't what made it remarkable, Luce realized in awe. This pool had been set down right in the middle of what used to be a massive church."
Fallen: Chapter 6 - No Salvation

As Fallen comes to an end, there are still many unanswered questions that will leave its new fans eagerly anticipating the sequel, Torment. Who will this book appeal to most? Usually teenagers, if the lead characters are teenagers. BUT as I am not a teen, and still love the story, I would not rule it out. So give it a chance. To me it was a refreshing take on the fallen angel's angle.

Lauren Kate's writing is very accomplished, The reader's interest is engaged early and, helped by a solid and ever-evolving plot, never lets go. This is a gothic love story featuring fallen angels and forbidden love (a winning formula) that will thrill and delight in equal measure.

Be sure to pick up Torment and Passion and also a nice extra novel called Fallen in Love (3.5) which you can read after book 3. Soon Rapture will be out to find out the conclusion to this story. (June 12 2012) My blog has extras and more reviews, see my profile for the link

England the year 1854. This book begins in the past. What an exciting beginning it tells the story from his perspective of two star-crossed lovers who have repeatedly been torn apart. He remembers and tries to walk away. She doesn’t and has no understanding of why she is drawn to him. But when they do get together, the combustion draws something strange. However, we have no names as of yet.

Current day: Luce became a student at the Sword & Cross reform school. Obviously, there is a reason she is here. Still, she seems like a typical teenager, minus some issues she seems to have that aren’t explained. She does mention a lot of details about this darkness she experiences. This school is clearly for troubled teens. I’m still wondering what her story is and what type of paranormal she is.

There is a weird love triangle in this book as she goes back and forth between Cam and Daniel. They both show something you could call interest. Cam is more forward and swoony, but we don’t know the skeletons in his closet. Daniel is more mean and snide, but we do know they have a history.

This book is very slow-moving to eventually figure out the paranormal aspects. A tragic accident at school leaves us with more questions than answers and Luce once again under scrutiny. We do finally get answers. There is romance, but it is a very young adult.

Things actually ramp up finally, but of course, now it is so much action that it is hard to comprehend the answers. Luce must go away, and it seems there is a tentative truce in place for the ones on opposite sides of this war. You do finally discover what kinds of paranormals are in this book, and I have to say I was shocked and surprised.

However, the book was very long and drawn out, and I wasn’t as into the story as I had hoped to be, so I probably won’t be reading any more in this series. I also won’t reveal the paranormal mystery in the book to you. You’ll have to read it yourself. I would call this book a paranormal romance. There was so little romance in it, but it definitely classifies as paranormal fiction.

This book is the one that got me into reading when I was young. It is YA and full of angels, demons and romance. It’s tense and kind of dark. I could read this again and again which I have. THIS IS AN AMAZING READ!

Would forever recommend!
