Greetings from a native Southern Californian. Yes, there are a few of us that exist!

I've been married 48 years to my high school sweetheart, Allen, who was born in Kansas. We met when we were fifteen. We don't have children, but are currently owned by a scruffy and adorable rescue terrier mix named Ivy. Though I'm a native Southern Californian, my parents are not. My father was born in Colorado and grew up in a migrant worker family. My mother's family were cotton share croppers in Arkansas. I've been writing since I was in my late-twenties. I published my first novel, Fool's Puzzle, when I was in my late thirties. I like to ride horses when I can (and luckily, have friends who own horses), walk my dog, travel with my husband and, of course, love to read. There are four girls in my family. I'm the number two sister.

I was named after my father and my grandfather. Both of them were named Earl. The first book I remember reading by myself was Curious George. I think it was the one where he went to the circus. My favorite fictional character is Old Yeller. He had courage and loyalty, two virtues I admire greatly. Back in the 1980's, for a year and a half, I taught a weekly craft class at a retirement home in Covina, California. My youngest member was in her late sixties; my oldest was ninety-eight. Those fifteen women taught me way more than I ever taught them. I love strawberry ice cream and fried tacos. Together or separately. Doesn't matter.

I enjoyed "Spider Web" on so many levels that I'm sure to miss listing some of them here. I suggest you get your own copy and read it when you have time for really studying the storyline. I kept stopping and was overwhelmed with my own personal memories.

This book deals with Benni being the Chair of the 'Memory Festival' which is about all memories, life, home, death, youth, military etc. In the midst of this, her husband is faced with a sniper that is shooting patrol Officers on his police force.

Gabe, The chief of police finds the situation triggering his potent memories of being in-country in Vietnam. They are violent. While Benni tries to deal with Gabe's situation, she learns a member of her quilt group was a nurse during the Second World War and was a prisoner for 3 years.

What is the motive behind the snipping? Is it a former military member or a discontent? The city of San Celina is trying to continue their lives while dealing with this very real fear.

I found this book very fulfilling and as I stated, I took my time due to remembering my friends that I made during my time in the USMC, although I was fortunate to be stateside.

This is a book I shall re-read in the years to come. It was an important book to me.

Spider Web is a real delight. Ms. Fowler's skilled use of dialogue, so natural and realistic, and superb plotting and timing captured and kept my full attention all the way to her final word. I've read and reread all her books in the Bennie Harper series and in my opinion Spider Web is the very best.

I revisited this book after many years, and I appreciated it much more now that I am older. Earlene Fowler is a good writer, much stronger than many cozy writers- she has strong characters, and we know what they look like. Benni is a complete character with a deep internal life and sense of loyalty. Fowler evokes a powerful connection with the scenery- we can picture the locations without having actually been there. At the same time, there is an intriguing mystery going on. It is a little slow at first, but picks up rapidly. Sometimes I am not quite as interested in all of her family connections and southernisms- it gets a bit cloying and annoying, but overall, this is a great read, and I highly recommend it.

Ranch woman, historian, quilter, and wife, Benni Harper deals with not only the complexities of a large and eccentric family, she is a product of the history and culture which surrounds her. She struggles with her own insecurities and difficult past while simultaneously being caught up in the local investigations her police chief husband is responsible for resolving. No crime is like another, and every crime is rooted in the uneasy ripples of societal problems. Benni’s stories are riveting, honest, and heart-stopping. Well-told tales with characters whose lives readers can embrace and care about. A mystery series worth the attention of thoughtful readers.

I have now finished this book and enjoyed it as I always enjoy her books. She does seem to be drifting more and more to their being more family stuff than mystery but maybe that is why people love these books so much. There is just a charm and comfort in her story telling that is lovely. She may have overdone it this time. I have all the Benni Harper books and for anyone who is thinking of buying one for the first time I would suggest that you order all of them and read them from #1 all through the series. You will enjoy this one much more if you have read the others first. I do agree with another reviewer that it dwells far too long on her father's love life and her grandmother and aunt's attempt to control it. The ego-centricities (I made up that word)of Dove have been rather annoying in the past but now she has a cohort in her sister and there really is too much time spent on that. Benni's character is taking on the smallest amount of smugness with her life that is also a little annoying. For someone in charge of the Center/Museum, etc., she doesn't seem to spend much time there. The resolving of the mystery was too abrupt with no real explanation of why this person began shooting people. I think that should have been explored more. And, the wrapping up of her husband's horrendous problems in just a few paragraphs didn't ring true. In the past, the behavior of her husband, Gabe, has seemed to push him over into the category of "full of himself" and "maybe not worth the trouble" to me but there is also a sweetness in her love for him. He has always seemed to me to value her more for the love she has for him than for her lovable qualities. I love the character of Hud and think she should have had a fling with him a long time ago. I'd like more of him in the books. Sam is a charmer but not much about him here. It's a good book but not her best by any means.

I've been a fan of the Benni Harper series since Earlene Fowler first introduced us to Benni Harper in FOOL'S PUZZLE and her latest, SPIDER WEB, is a great addition. Other reviewers have provided a synopsis of the plot so no need for me to repeat that again. Why do I like the book? One of the things I appreciate most about Ms. Fowler as a series writer is that she hasn't grown tired of her characters and she hasn't fallen into the formulaic trap. In some series, you can almost identify in which book the author gets bored and is just cranking out another story without much thought. Not so with Ms. Fowler. Her characters continue to grow and evolve and in SPIDER WEB she has expertly woven several apparently disparate threads together into a cohesive story. I especially appreciate the introduction of Gabe's PTSD, which is sadly relevant today with returning vets from Iraq and Afghanistan. Ms Fowler deftly acknowledges the price combat troops pay, sometimes triggered years later by a chance event, without making them pitiful. I admire Ms. Fowler's ability to make us laugh, make us cry and make us think all within the same story and I've often thought that Benni Harper is someone I'd love to know. I look forward to many more stories about Benni and San Celina!

Came in time, so good service.
I am into my sewing and quilting, I also only read mystery/detective books, so I've got two things I like in a book.
They are easy to read, no complex puzzles or wording, so good to just relax with after a hectic day. Writer builds up the characters through the series, so you begin to feel you know them. She describes the western/southern life style well and you can imagine and almost smell it sometimes. The info at the beginning of the book about the different quilting designs are very interesting, but you don't get bogged down with quilting info etc in the story as she just puts enough in to include it into the story. The plots are varied an interesting, as it is a different way of life to ours.
Really enjoying them and would recommend them if you are into crafts and mysteries.
