Twilight at Mac's Place may be my all time favorite due to its cast of characters, interesting plot and superb dialogue. I put Thomas in the category of Elmore Leonard.
Thomas knows the politics, which takes a lot of years or simply being born in the District.
What's marvelous to me is that Thomas knows the streets & shops that make up the city. You'd think anyone with an old ADC bookmap could manage this (DC's small), but even writers who have lived here get themselves and we locals totally lost.
It is a joy to read about my hometown, having it match the city I know so well.
This tale is an entertaining read, as are all of Ross Thomas' books. The people are believable by DC standards. It's a vibrant city, but because politics and the intelligence community flavor everything, DC often zigs when another city would zag. Thomas never forgets that.
I just finished "Cold War Swap" and it was equally, if not more, entertaining. I'm looking forward to working my way through the whole Ross Thomas library. I can't wait to get started on "Cast a Yellow Shadow".
Thomas belongs right up there with Ross Maconald, Earle Stanley Gardner, even Elmore Leonard.

Note: this is the fourth of the Mac's Place books but don't worry if you haven't read any of the others -- Thomas handles back references with brief but deft pen pictures.
