Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Former CIA "fixer" Steadfast Haynes dies in Washington, D.C., leaving his memoirs to his son Granville, an ex-L.A. homicide investigator. Granny finds that the manuscript is mostly blank pages and is soon faced with the murders of both his father's lover and a CIA retiree. According to PW , "Thomas is at his best here with an intricate, riveting plot and a fine dry humor."

I have always enjoyed Ross Thomas who is a skilled and unique writer of entertaining and clever "thrillers."
Twilight at Mac's Place may be my all time favorite due to its cast of characters, interesting plot and superb dialogue. I put Thomas in the category of Elmore Leonard.

Ross is one of my favorite authors. His books are starting to get expensive since his death a few years ago.

Compelling cold war tale that combines humor and intrigue. Plus it returns the characters of Mac's Place. Good read.

I've read many books and seen many videos set in the District of Columbia.
Thomas knows the politics, which takes a lot of years or simply being born in the District.
What's marvelous to me is that Thomas knows the streets & shops that make up the city. You'd think anyone with an old ADC bookmap could manage this (DC's small), but even writers who have lived here get themselves and we locals totally lost.
It is a joy to read about my hometown, having it match the city I know so well.
This tale is an entertaining read, as are all of Ross Thomas' books. The people are believable by DC standards. It's a vibrant city, but because politics and the intelligence community flavor everything, DC often zigs when another city would zag. Thomas never forgets that.

I have read nearly all of the Ross Thomas books and this one is my favorite. The twist and turns are perfect. Some of his other books were lessened by the action pack endings but this book did not suffer that fate.

This was a fun read. The character's were great and the plot kept me surprised. I wish I had discovered Ross Thomas a long time ago.

I just finished "Cold War Swap" and it was equally, if not more, entertaining. I'm looking forward to working my way through the whole Ross Thomas library. I can't wait to get started on "Cast a Yellow Shadow".

Murder mystery set in post Viet-Nam Washington DC. Complex plot with interesting characters. What makes this special, and really (for me) any of the Ross Thomas books i've read so far... No one can hold a candle to Ross Thomas' writing. The story here keeps you interested, the whodunit doesn't start to come clear until almost the end. it's good. But the descriptions, the character development, the unfolding of the plot... Every so often it makes me pause and just marvel at how well, how clever, how subtle, how interesting, Ross Thomas writes..

Ross Thomas was hyped as "America's best storyteller," and the hype was true. ALL his books are very enjoyable reading. His knowledge of Europe and Asia in the Sixties and Seventies shines through all his mysteries, which are thankfully much less bloody than the current iteration of the old mystery genre, but with a lot more humor and sly hints than our current crop.

Thomas belongs right up there with Ross Maconald, Earle Stanley Gardner, even Elmore Leonard.

Ross Thomas never wrote a bad book: this is well up to his customary standards, A tale of intrigue and criminality amongst old spies and new heroes, this isintelligent writing for those who love a good read.

Note: this is the fourth of the Mac's Place books but don't worry if you haven't read any of the others -- Thomas handles back references with brief but deft pen pictures.
