Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bestselling Salvatore (Starless Night) returns with a pleasant fantasy novel, notable mainly for its attention to detail. Salvatore describes and choreographs battle scenes better than any other contemporary fantasist, as this first tale of the adventures of Luthien Bedwyr amply demonstrates. The naive Luthien plunges into a series of events, beginning with a self-imposed exile from his father's kingdom of Bedwyr, which has fallen "under the iron rule of King Greensparrow of Avon," that test his mettle and increase the political stakes for which he must fight. As Salvatore carefully and exquisitely builds his narrative, Luthien, along with the charming Oliver de Burrows?self-described thief with the obligatory heart of gold?finds his actions becoming more consequential, especially in his Robin Hood-like guise as the "Crimson Shadow." The tale is satisfactorily resolved, but with enough matters left hanging to suggest that readers looking forward to a sequel may well be rewarded.

From Library Journal

Young Luthien Bedwyr's blind loyalty to his father, the Earl of Bedwydrin, turns to contempt when he realizes that his father is powerless against the agents of the evil Wizard-King who rules their land. Taking to the road to fight for justice, Luthien acquires a roguish (and diminutive) highway halfling companion, a magical cape, and a reputation as "The Crimson Shadow." The author of the "Dark Elf" series tries his hand at swashbucking fantasy with this fast-paced series opener. Although an overabundance of swordplay leaves marginal room for character development, the heroes' escapades pave the way for future adventures. Libraries looking to satisfy a demand for fantasy adventure may want to consider this title.

Leominster, Massachusetts is known for four things: Johnny Appleseed, a thriving plastics industry, Robert Cormier, and New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore. With over 20 million books sold worldwide, more than four dozen book and numerous game credits Salvatore has become one of the most important figures in modern epic fantasy.

A lifelong resident of Massachusetts, R.A. Salvatore, began writing shortly after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Communications/Media from Fitchburg State College. He penned his first manuscript in 1982, in a spiral notebook, writing by candlelight while listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Tusk album.

Bob’s first published novel, "The Crystal Shard", was released in February of 1988. By 1990 his third book, "The Halfling’s Gem", had made the New York Times bestseller list.

Salvatore spends a good deal of time speaking to schools and library groups, encouraging people, particularly young people, to read. With the zeal of a religious convert, he talks about the virtues of reading and the ultimate appeal, “it is fun.” He remembers his return to reading when he was in college, “The blizzard of 1978 shut down my college for a week. My sister had given me a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, which I read while house-bound. When I got back to school, I changed my major from math to communications.”

Salvatore makes his home in Massachusetts, with his wife, Diane and their two dogs, Ivan and Dexter. He spends his “free time” coaching and playing softball on a team made up of family and close friends. His gaming group still meets on Sunday nights to play games. Of late, they have been playing the new game R.A.designed with Bryan Salvatore and Geno Salvatore, "DemonWars: Reformation", a role-playing game set in the World of Corona.

He is currently working on more novels set in Corona for his DemonWars series.

Really fun adventure between two friends as they unwittingly start a revolution with their antics.

Salvatore never disappoints with the action sequences, the use of magic and funny unique characters. It’s good to read something outside of the realms from Salvatore as he gets to flex his own world building muscles a bit.

A fun weekend read that’s hard to put down

This is so Salvatore! This is a good thing since he is one of the 2 or 3 best fantasy writers & always writes terrific books.his main character Luthien teams up with a halfling & becomes a “thief” ultimately turning into a savior of sorts. Like his other books his stories have continuity & his characters are most interesting. Ready for book 2

Fresh and engrossing, epic fantasy at its best. Another gem from the creator of Drizzt himself. 5 stars of approval and a definite must read book if you enjoy high fantasy along the lines of Lord of Rings, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance and other similar works. Looking forward to the continuing adventures of Oliver and Luthien!

Love the Crimson Shadow. Salvatore is a master of fantasy writing. If you've never read any of his books and a fantasy lover then you're missing out on one of the best and in my opinion the best fantasy writer alive today. Try the Cleric Quintet, or any of his Dark Elf book's. The only problem is there's so many lol.

Light, breezy reading.

The story follows the MC and his hobbit-like sidekick from one adventure to another. Nothing grimdark about this at all. It's old-fashioned fantasy fluff. Sometimes these types of books are exactly what I'm in the mood to read.

The Sword of Bedwyr (The Crimson Shadow Book 1) " is a republishing of " The Crimson Shadow: Sword of Bedwyr " . While reading it I started remembering the events taking place. So I searched and found the original series in my Collections and reread the entire series I would rate it 4 Stars worth buying all three books. They were republished an so I guess they are considered different books. The old versions no longer appears on Amazon so I guess it does not indicate that you already purchased the book.

This is great RA Salvatore story weaving. If you are a fan of Salvatore and his writing this is a must read. A great trilogy that takes us to a new place and introduces new characters to love. Give it a shot!

Awesome read just as expected with stories by Salvatore. Not a disappointment as though provoking and interesting as fully expected.
