Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

As one of the original "outlaw" country music stars, Jennings (b. 1937) has done his best to live up to the image of the hard-living honky-tonker who doesn't take crap from anybody. With the help of writer and rock guitarist Kaye, an older, calmer, drug-free Jennings now relates his life story, from his childhood in a dirt-floored house in West Texas, through his busted marriages and hard-partying days, to his current existence as happily married man (to country star Jessi Colter) and member of the Highwaymen, the country music supergroup made up of Jennings, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. The narration reads as if Jennings is relating stories over a beer. There are wonderfully evocative accounts of playing bass for Buddy Holly on his last tour?Jennings gave up his seat on the plane that crashed, killing Holly and the Big Bopper?and of Jennings and Johnny Cash sharing an apartment in Nashville in the early '60s. There's a little more than most readers need to know about Jennings's money troubles, sex life, personal feuds and various drug habits, and there are a few too many testimonials from younger performers (e.g., Billy Ray Cyrus telling Jennings, "You're like a god to me"). As a raconteur, Jennings is by turns self-deprecating and self-indulgent, but never less than entertaining, and almost always charming. This soulful book should interest most anyone curious about the life of a pop musician, and is likely to be essential reading for country fans. A selected discography of Jennings's recordings is included. Photos not seen by PW.

This is a no holds barred, HONEST truth from a man who couldn't do it any other way. Of course, I grew up listening to and being a big fan of this man. My Dad was an over the road truck driver. Reading about Waylon Jennings humble upbringing in Texas, reminded me sooo much of my Dad. Reading this book felt like I was sitting down with him, just listening to him. This hard working, determined, whatever it takes type of man, is dying off. He was the same age as my parents. They are a generation that is no more. This is the story of a man who climbed over, dug under or found the way around all obstacles in his way. He admits he was an unfaithful husband, neglectful father, and drug addict. But through this story he walks in his truth. The good, the bad and the horrendously ugly. He lived and he loved chasing the dream of writing and singing the music in his head. The music that kept time with the beat of his heart and his feet that couldn't stand still. He lost friends, left marriages and lost touch with his children. Not because he wanted too but because this was his journey in life. His life's work is what drove him and was the soundtrack of mine and millions of others lives. It paid his alimony, supported his children and paid hundreds of people who worked for and against him. He was a lover, a fighter, a friend and a maverick. He was a pioneer in a business that was set in tradition and cut in stone. He tried to do it THEIR way but the music in his SOUL didn't fit their MOLD. So he had to forge his own. He listen to an extent, to friends who came before him. He kicked down the doors of those who opposed him and made life long friends with those who understood his passion for the music. Because of his determination, drive and pure orneriness, HE paved the way for generations to come. He took the dreams of Hank Williams and Buddy Holly, who died too soon and made them a reality. There was a style in music that refused to move forward. Beating down the doors of that style was a gang of troubadours that wouldn't be denied. Scruffy, loud, sometimes obnoxious and hell bent on being heard. Thank God!!!
The best part was when he found the other half of his soul, Jessi Colter. The woman who understood his inner passion. Who accepted him with ALL his addiction and loved him through it all. The one who loved his children, his family and friends. The Lady that HE respected, that respected HIM. The woman who wrote songs from the heart, like he did. The woman like him who understood the poet inside and the music that had to be played. The rambler who had to be on stage. The ROCK that he needed when everything in life let him down. The fighter who tolerated his addiction and loved him through his recovery. The Mother of his last child, who showed him the true meaning of fatherhood, at last. The woman he married twice, because THEIR love and commitment was sooo beautiful and STRONG. It moved me to tears.
This is a book, like a conversation, I wish I could've had with my Dad. It's filled with stories of friendships, of hardship and lessons learned too late. Missed opportunity and dogged determination. Tragedy, triumph and the truth, as he saw it.
These are HIS memories and HIS feelings about the life he lived. His choices and why he made them. HIS TRUTH in HIS own words. The Troubadour, the Outlaw, the Highwayman. The Lover, the Husband, the Father, the Son, the Brother, the Uncle. The Legend, THE MAN.
I've read a lot of Autobiographies and it could be because I'm a fan or because he reminds me of my own Dad. But this is the BEST I have ever read. If you love Waylon Jennings, this is a book you don't want to miss. Jessi Colter also has a book titled An Outlaw And A Lady, it's also another side of their story.
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ALL FANS AND LOVERS OF COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!

I really didn’t know very much about Waylon Jennings, except remembering and enjoying some of his hit songs. His book defiantly broadened my view of him. Most enlightening, was his and other country musicians drug addiction during their careers. In spite of his turbulent ups and downs, he wrote, sang, and produced many of the songs I enjoyed during his “Outlaw” music days.
Since I don’t have a musical background, I did found his detailed description of musical instruments and techniques of playing styles a bit boring. Overall, I enjoyed this book, and I would recommend it.

Wow! I didn’t want this book to end and already miss it! If you’re a fan of music or even just authenticity this is a must read! Loved Waylon before “Waylon”, love Waylon more after. The most insightful, funny, humble, engrossing, raw, honest, authentic, riveting autobiography I have read. Don’t think I’ll ever find anything like it again. His one of a kind voice jumps off the page. He does not shy away from any and all personal and professional triumphs and it reads like he’s talking to you. Not down to you. With you. Regrets, he’s had a few too but it’s an honest portrait of his life, his roles such as parent and choices. Many biographies are boring through the backstory and I’d rather read the phone book rather than endure the slog. Here, every stage of Waylon’s life is painted vividly from his modest West Texas upbringing to becoming the biggest (and still the best!) star to pay his dues in the honor tonks and reign over Nashville. And can you believe it still took him years to be able to make the music (!) he wanted when he got there?? It’s a heartbreaking (Buddy Holly backstory that will stay with you) and heartwarming (Jessi) nugget-filled (Elvis, Muhammad Ali stories!) and absolutely unique story. He changed the way musicians forever make music. He fought for musical control and NEVER changed who he was or what he believed in. Sacrificed for it too. And he poured that spirit into all of his shows for his fans. I always felt like I was behind the curtain of his life, good and bad. You can tell this book must have been cathartic and meaningful to him. I feel like I know Waylon and know so much more about the music industry, life on the road and the challenges and sacrifices that come with being a star. And he just seems like a really nice guy! The reader can’t be fooled and he never tries to. Like all of his performances he put every ounce he has into this and never forgets he is ENTERTAINING the reader. A true master. This book is a nonstop encore from THE original outlaw they’re still trying to imitate but never duplicate. Legend on stage, Legend in print. Thank you Waylon for once again showing how it’s done!!

Waylon Jennings packed a lot into this book. The book not only has a lot about Waylon himself, but also a lot about what it's really like to be a country music performer. Waylon also has interesting stories about the people he has known. I am glad that I read it.

Country music isn't the same without Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash.

The book frankly hard to follow time-line. But if take this book as a sit on porch swinging watching the sun go down reminiscing, it is well worth the time.

Wonderful book from one of the greatest stars in Country music! A real rebel and inventor when he was going back to the basics of making music. Interesting life story described with good humor and very impressive to read how he overcame his drug addiction!
Highly recommended to all music fans who are interested in music history and one of its predominant actors in his field.
