"Coffman's writing is deft, capable, and evocative."

*Publishers Weekly

He had done the right thing for the wrong reason. . . . A man driven by despair and an unwillingness to forgive, William Woodville fled his native England, his title, and his duty. In the American wilderness he found the perfect vengeance: A woman. She was a captive handed from tribe to tribe in an odyssey of despair *until William purchased the untamed innocent on the auction block; married her, bedded her, and defiantly presented her to his father in England before he turned and left . . . alone.

Abandoned by the man she loved, she let the pain of betrayal make her strong. . . . Margery Mackinnon needed a family more than a husband, love and security more than an explanation, and time to discover the strange world about her. She blossomed from a primitive wildflower to a lady of the town: the woman she was destined to be. When William returned to the wife he left and the twin sons he never knew, he was captivated by a beguiling woman unwilling to forgive him. Now the man who abandoned love must fight to reclaim it. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Author Elaine Coffman is immensely proud of IF YOU LOVE ME and she should be. It's her first book to hit the New York Times bestseller list, and the reviews have been amazing. But, most importantly, this is the concluding volume to her beloved Mackinnon series featuring five brothers, orphaned in a Comanche raid, forced to grow up apart, always searching for the sister who was held captive. Reader have been asking for years for Elaine to do Margery's story, and this is it. Finally, fans will find out what happened to the lost sister, now a grown woman without an identity. It's a moving story of her search for love and acceptance in a society that she doesn't understand. I found this to be a very special book that transcends the confines of the romance genre.

William Woodville had fled England due to his disgust against his father. He meets Margery a white woman who has been held captive by three differnt. Indian tribes .She was captured when she was only six years old. She can only remember her fiirst. name.
Will sees her as a perfect way to get back at his father. He marries her takes her to his home upsets his father and leaves right way . She is abandoned treated just as bad as the. Indians did her.
He stays away for two years thinking of her the whole time he was gone.. He is in for a surprise he will not find the adoring wife he left. She has had twins and hardened her heart against him. I agree with another reviewer they spent too much time apart .He also got forgiven quickly for what he had done because of what happened to him.. I did like the book first time reading the author have one more book by her to read.

SPOILERS ***This is the first Elaine Coffman book I have read. This was enjoyable.
The plot is simple. A woman was kidnapped by a native tribe and lived with them
from about age six to twenty seven. She was rescued by an Englishman who
sort of sensed how she felt (emotionally) and he traded her for some ponies.
He did have an ulterior motive for saving her and that was marry her and bring her
home to England to get back at his father (who hated him) and marrying a "indian
savage" was just the way to do it !!! (and it is 1857). Shock. Surprise. Anger.
Then, abruptly, after introducing her to the family,he leaves and walks out the door-
out of his bride's life and his away from his family (also leaving a couple developing
fetuses inside his wife's womb). Thanks a lot !
I enjoyed the narrative of this story. It was fast paced and engaging. I liked the first
part of the book where he got to know her a little bit and they made love together.
Both of these people had emotional scars but,in different ways. Margery because of
kidnapping and abuse from Indians and William from the dysfunctional relationship
with his father. I do have a complaint though,I thought it weird he abandoned his wife
like that (and for two years !!!) and I thought the transition from life with native tribes
to living with her husbands family-a bit too easy. I would think it would be much more
difficult for a person to overcome abuse so easily. Still, enjoyable to read.

One of those books that are hard to forget and a love story that is easy to believe. Elaine Coffman became one of my favorite authors with this beautiful novel. I am an avid fan of Judith Mcnaught, Jude Deveraux and Johanna Lindsey and I added Coffman to my list because of this book.

The heroine, Margery, was held captive for 20 yrs. of her life. During that time she has been traded through three different Indian tribes. While in the middle of another trade, Will, the hero, encounters the negotiation. He decides right then and there to purchase her and make her his bride for the purpose of getting back at his dad. Margery, unaware of the true purpose of his "heroic" act, looks at Will as her savior.

When they arrive at Will's family home on Christmas Eve, he and his father exchange angry words and he leaves Margery. In that moment she realizes his true purpose for marrying her. Broken hearted, abandoned and betrayed, she hardens her heart and with the help of her mother-in-law she no longer is the "little savage" Will deemed her to be. Margery is accepted by the ton and learns to be independent.

All the while, Will is in America with his dying friend pining away for Margery. After two yrs Will returns home to find his shy and submissive wife is no longer so. However he prefers the new headstrong Margery than the meek and biddable Margery. After a couple rounds of battle of the wills, they finally come together.

This book is part of a series, but the only one I read. It can be read as a stand alone. It was a great read, but my only complaint was the battle of wills was too brief. After two yrs being away, I felt, Will should have fought harder and longer to win his wife back. And I know I know, his physical ailment is the reason it brought them together sooner than it would have otherwise, but I felt he owed her more than, what was it, two weeks of trying to win her over? The author could've added a couple more pages with him on his knees... ^_^

The ending was quite lovely and was the perfect ending to the series. Even though I didn't read the other books, it just seemed to fit.

Loved beginning Hero purchases white woman captive from Indian tribe She survives as a virgin due to tribes superstition that she is cursed from an accident that kills one who tries to assault her She is traded from tribe to tribe after sickness hits one village after she arrives Heroine has a sweet personality humble subservient & adoring of her rescuer He calls her little Savage Enjoyed their interactions To me story is ruined when hero drops her off with his family & leaves her Hated time heroine spent on her own with his family which is half the book When he returns her personality has changed which I didn't like she is mean & hateful to him Not the sweet person in the beginning who I enjoyed reading about so I stopped reading at 80% If author had kept H & h together the entire book it would have been more entertaining, another conflict besides abandonment could have been devised
