This is a wonderful book, It is written in the present, so it make it all seem so real. I loved that Anna is so responsible and loves her much younger brother and sister enough to give up her life dreams for them, no matter the consequence. I loved how the story shows that white and black/biracial happens in this world, And it goes to show that children can learn on there own. This story is about Anna, a 15 yr old biracial/white,15 yr old girl, her mother is white, so she knows her father is black, she just doesnt know anything about him or her entire family, as her mother always told her, there was no other family or anything about where they came from. She practically raises her brother and sister, since her mother is an acoholic and disappears sometimes for a day or two. But this time, Anna realizes, and seen, her mother isnt coming back, she also knows all to well the DSS system isnt what it seems, She tries her best to keep them together, doing everything she can, and finds a boy/friend in the process, as her mother never told her just how pretty she was. They were very poor and she was made fun of so many times at school, spite she was an A student in school, must read to see the ending, I loved it and I am a grown woman with grown children and grandchildren, I grabbed it at the vets book corner and borrowed to read, I will now let my daughter read it,

A Place To Call Home is a very good book. It is written in first-person and it is written in present tense, which is kind of unusual. It is about biracial Anna O'Dell, and her struggles with her life after her mother commits suicide by driving into a lake. She has a five-year-old sister, Mandy and a baby brother, Casey. One difference is that all the kids have different fathers, or at least Anna has one father and the other 2 have another. Anna has a white mother and a black father, but the other 2 kids have both white parents. Anna has to be a mother and father to Mandy and Casey, and she also has to hide her mother's disappearance from everyone to keep her family together. As the title implies, Anna tries to find a place to call home. She also has to learn more about her mother and herself before she can grow up. She even goes to Mississippi, where her mother grew up and learns about sexual abuse and sadness in her mother's life. Near the end, Anna talks to her mother and thinks about her, next to the lake where she found the car. I think you should go ahead and buy the book - it is worth it. I hope it will affect and touch you the way it did me.

As I tend to go for LONGER books, this one was an appitizer to me. It was a quaint story.. that I devoured in less than a day. Easy reading.. Somewhat predictible story line.. that could have been rendered from a lifetime movie for sure. It does show the struggles of a 15 year old girl, and the thinking that she has (that we have all had)... But it also has a nice little pink bow ending.. and we all know that life doens't happen that way, however much we might really want it to.. However, if that is what you like.. a nice wrapped up ending with no strings sticking out.. this book is for you.

It was a fine book, but not one of my top ten.

The O'Dell children are left alone when things get too much to handle for their mother. So their mother just takes off. Fifteen-year-old Anna has now learned to take care of her five-year-old sister Mandy, and her seven-month-old brother Casey. Anna tries to hide, and not let anyone know that mother is gone. Anna's goal is to keep the three of them together, but she has to make tough decisions. This is Anna's story. I enjoyed this book because, I would never want to stop. It just kept getting good.

I usually read the first page of a book to make sure that I like it. Before I knew it, the clerks of the book store told my mom that I would have to buy it if I wanted to read it all. I, by accidentally read nearly half of the book already, and finished it later that day. It was a book that really told the life of this girl and it will grab you, and hold you .
