Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Ochiltree's (Ten Monkey Jamboree) ebullient offering puts readers through the paces of an early morning pillow fight. Set against a white background, the opening illustrations show a perky puppy ("My dog, Maggie") peering over a sunny yellow blanket, then pulling at a pillow as the young narrator sleeps. Wispy strokes convey the puppy's wagging tail as the pet pulls the pillow off the bed. D'Allance's (Bear's Christmas Star) full-bleed illustrations mimic sunrise with gold and grapefruit, powder blue and peach pastels as the narrator recounts Maggie's actions ("[She] chews my pillow up She takes it and shakes it from side to side"). Abundant white space and lively vignettes vary the pacing as Maggie continues her "tail-wagging floor-dragging zig-zagging ride." One spread shows Maggie in an uncharacteristic anthropomorphized pose, literally prancing on her hind legs ("She does one of her you-can't-catch-me dances"). However, youngsters will likely pick up on the narrative's rhythmic beat and join in with Maggie and her appealing owner. Just when the girl (with book in hand) thinks it's safe to relax, the pup starts in again. Preschoolers will likely want to repeat from the beginning as well. Ages 3-6.

From Booklist

Ages 3-6. Meet Maggie, the quintessential puppy, who loves nothing more than a good-morning chase and a game of tug-of-war with her little girl's pillow. She's a "pillow-pulling pup" who likes to shake it "from side to side on a tail wagging, floor dragging, zig-zagging ride." The little girl is happy to oblige her as they race through the house in a "puppy-person tug-of-war." Eventually the girl puts the pillow down only to have Maggie snatch it up and start all over again. Bright pastel illustrations on clean white spreads capture all of the motion of this early-morning romp, and readers will enjoy the bouncy rhythm in the rhyming text. Anyone who has ever known a dog will delight in the familiar, classic puppy behavior in this appealing offering. Helen Rosenberg

I love dogs and thought this would be a sweet book to keep in my office when small children came with their parents. It is a great read that has delightful illustrations. I gave a copy to two different friends who recently lost their "Maggie", the name of the pup in the book. They have enjoyed it as well. Maggie is a sweet pillow pup just like my own Darcy who is a PhD (a pillow hound dog). REALLY enjoyable story. Thank you.

Dianne Ochiltree is a master of poetic language and evocative prose. Her lyrical verse perfectly captures the exuberance of an early-morning romp between little girl and puppy. This is a book that anyone, especially dog-lovers, will treasure.
