Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of literally millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 62 languages and sold over 41 million copies. Since the Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than 70 books, many best sellers, most of which he also wrote.

Carle says: "With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates - will they be friendly? I believe the passage from home to school is the second biggest trauma of childhood; the first is, of course, being born. Indeed, in both cases we leave a place of warmth and protection for one that is unknown. The unknown often brings fear with it. In my books I try to counteract this fear, to replace it with a positive message. I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them that learning is really both fascinating and fun."

Eric Carle has two grown-up children, a son and a daughter. He divides his time between the Florida Keys and the hills of North Carolina.

A little boys wakes up with a longing for pancakes, and his mom is busy and so directs him to get grain, have it milled, get milk from the cow, etc in order to make the pancake. This a fairly long, detailed story that teaches kids where their food comes from through text and Carle's signature colorful artwork. I would recommend this for ages 3.5 on up. This is one of my four year old's favorite books, and he particularly loves learning about the grain being grind. This book is a great way for children to access the concept of farm to table. It's a bit long without much plot, but I've loved seeing how it has ignited my son's curiosity.

I read this book to my son last night. Few pages later, I looked at my 2.5 years old son; he had a blank face. This book tells a long explanation of how flour is made. I asked him whether he understands what is going on. He shook his head. Certainly, he, raised in the city especially, does not know what a stone mill is and so forth. However, I was fascinated by the story and read it till the end. It reminded me of a lot of that I have forgotten. It introduces a fundamental and important concept that one should know, such as your food is not magically made by one mom, but it takes many hands of many diligent people to be on the table. All that said, I will keep this book and keep reading it for my son, hoping that one day my son gets what is really in this story.

Just excellent! As Eric Carle's other works are. It is a great story teaching children where our food comes from and how much labor goes into producing the foods that we eat. The illustrations are very nice too. The text is smaller on the boardbook, too. That was a little surprise. But it is still a great book.

I feel as if the size of the book was not correctly conveyed, and was surprised to see that the book was a tiny book the size of maybe 4“ x 6“

My 4 year old grandson and I go out for pancakes once a week. I decided to find a pancake book we could read while waiting for the server to bring our order. We both enjoyed the story. After reading it a few times he was able to "read" the story by following the illustrations. We truly enjoy the book. My only disappointment was the size of the book (which is why I gave it 4 stars) ... My own fault. Had I read the item description it clearly states its size. Lesson learned for me to read dimensions when I'm buying books, but I think others should be aware of the size. Again ... Very good story and we will always enjoy it! Nice addition to his "library". Thank you!

I usually read this to 4 year olds who love it, but upon reading it last...I thought my nephew might enjoy it. He is not yet 2, but he loves reading, lists and cooking so I thought he might like this book. He LOVED it and would say "Mas (more) Pancakes?" It is a long story for a little one, but he had me read it 3 times in a row! It's fun to make pancakes after you read it. 😊

This book is crazy small. Hard to even see the words. 3"x3" at best. BECAREFUL know what you are ordering.

Fantastic book, fantastic author, fantastic artwork. I read this to my son almost every day! It is a favorite of his and Eric Carle does a great job letting readers know what goes on behind a pancake... They learn where all the ingredients come from which has also been fun for my 4 year old! This book is well loved in our home!
