"Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn 'em to ashes, then burn the ashes."

For Guy Montag, a career fireman for whom kerosene is perfume, this is not just an official slogan. It is a mantra, a duty, a way of life in a tightly monitored world where thinking is dangerous and books are forbidden.

In 1953, Ray Bradbury envisioned one of the world's most unforgettable dystopian futures, and in
Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, the artist Tim Hamilton translates this frightening modern masterpiece into a gorgeously imagined graphic novel. As could only occur with Bradbury's full cooperation in this authorized adaptation, Hamilton has created a striking work of art that uniquely captures Montag's awakening to the evil of government-controlled thought and the inestimable value of philosophy, theology, and literature.

Including an original foreword by Ray Bradbury and fully depicting the brilliance and force of his canonic and beloved masterwork,
Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 is an exceptional, haunting work of graphic literature.

From Publishers Weekly

A faithful adaptation of the original, Hamilton's comics version conveys the social commentary of the novel, while using the images to develop the tone. He uses grainy, static colors and images obscured by heavy black shadows and textures to portray the oppressive nature of this world where firemen start fires instead of putting them out. Malevolent forces and danger lurk in the shadows pervading the suburban home of fireman Montag and his wife, Mildred. Montag questions the happiness of his mundane life when prodded by his strange new neighbor, a young girl named Clarisse, as well as his wife's drug overdose. This leads him to throw himself into a dangerous struggle to expose the world's hypocrisy by spreading the forbidden knowledge contained in books. The art solidifies atmospheric elements such as the fire and rain; fire, tapering and curling, is rendered into a crucial additional character. Since the original expounds the importance of valuing and preserving books and knowledge, adapting it into the comics form emphasizes the growth of the medium, as well as its potency across genres and subjects. An adaptation with imagination and verve

An adaptation with imagination and verve
This adaptation of Bradbury's classic novella to a graphic novel is really superb, one of the best transitions between media of this sort that I've seen. In some ways Tim Hamilton's graphic novel actually improves on the original prose story without trodding on it. First off, the novella is just the right length to be a great graphic novel without being too long or too short. At 160 pages the graphic novel can be read in one sitting, which preserves the impact of the novella. The art is gorgeous, and uses a really restrained palette that really brings out the coldness of the society Bradbury created, then switches over to glorious reds and yellows to show the fireman's flame. I like Hamilton's art style, which I would say is close to Tim Sale ("Batman: The Long Halloween").Here's one of many key scenes in the novella done with imagination and verve in the graphic novel:[...][...]I was actually really reluctant to read this graphic novel because I have great memories of reading the original prose. I'm happy to say that the graphic novel compares favorably with the source. The story is simple and yet complex, and forces you to look at our society and its values; the story is MORE relevant now than when it was first published in 1953. The televisions of 1953 have been replaced in the "Fahrenheit" world with the living-room walls themselves which have become televisions, and there's a discussion about voting for the presidential candidate who is handsomer...I don't mean to imply that the graphic novel is all that didactic; it's not. But along the way it does ask you to think about where our society is going, and who we are as a culture. As you can see from the pages I posted, the art is low key, and purposely not "over the top" but really very effective. If you remember from the prose novella, there are some really crushing events that happen to the protagonist, and Tim Hamilton doesn't overdo them; he just presents them. Not only is this "authorized" by Ray Bradbury, but he also does the forward. You know he didn't do this for the bucks, and you can see why he's happy with the result. There's actually a passage in the graphic novel that takes a well-deserved swipe at "classic" novels done as comics:[...]But the point is well taken, and this transformation into the graphic novel format is everything you could wish for from a transfer to this medium. It's every bit as moving as the source prose.

I think all of Ray Bradbury's stories are difficult to capture in movies. I think most of them have bombed. It's a shame that a writer that captures the imagination and illustrates it so well can't be translated into movies (so far). However, after reading this graphic novel, I believe Tim Hamilton was able to capture the visual magic of Bradbury's best novel in pictures. My message to younger people who have never read 451 (the book), but are picking up this graphic novel for the first time, need to read the book! Although this graphic novel is brilliant and works wonderfully as a graphic novel, it is abridged from the book. Since the whole subject of 451 is about the value of a book and it's ideas, the graphic novel should never replace the book, only add to its color and life! Have fun leafing through the pages of this great graphic version of 451!

Until i read this book in my 11th grade english class just 2 years ago, I HATED READING! When this book was assigned i expected to read the first 2 or 3 pages and then skim the rest of the book for answers to the questions. 2 pages turned into 3, 3 pages turned into 4, and 4 pages turned into the back cover. This book is perfect for this time period. In a world where we cant even trust anything our government(s) tell us, this book really opens your eyes. It is amazing to me how Bradbury wrote this in the 1950's as a Sci-Fic novel and it has basically become a biography of our time period. I guarentee you that 1.) when you start reading this book you will not want to put it down, and 2.) after you finish it, you will never look at the world the same way again.

Ordered this for my daughter’s class book club not realizing it is a graphic novel version. So I gave it to her 13 year old sister who liked it. However she said parts of it are hard to understand (which her sister who read the novel version also said of the story)

I used this book for a student who struggled with understanding the novel. The comic format followed closely with the original novel and greatly helped the student to enjoy the story.

I loved the novel when I read it so long ago, so was skeptical of the irony of making a graphic novel of it. I was astounding wished at how good, how contemporary and relevant this version is. Well worth the time. I would recommend it to younger readers especially, and even more to those who don't enjoy reading.

I’ve never been big on graphic novels, but this may have changed my mind forever. While the story is well-known, the artistry of the illustrations take it to new and welcome places. Some may argue that you simply MUST read the original work, but if a work like this gets people reading and thinking, then I say great!

This is a fine example of how classic science fiction should be adapted into graphic form. Tim Hamilton's artwork manages to convey the dreary minimalism of Bradbury's nightmare world, without itself being both drab and prosaic. He is smart enough to leave large chunks of Bradbury's poetic dialogue raw and intact, while the artwork is so detailed as to do justice to the authors original lush descriptive language. I wish Tim Hamilton would do a whole slew of Bradbury adaptations along with some of the other sci-fi greats, yet I'm sure he has his reasons for not doing so.

A superb story with a profound message, which can be enjoyed on many levels. I think any fan of the novel, would be pleasantly surprised by how lovingly and faithfully Tim Hamilton has reformed this master work into the graphic medium. Sublime and highly recommended.
