Simple Straightforward Conquest

I like the straightforward simplicity of this game. A good, simple strategy game that works without any real bugs. Its great simplicity makes it very playable and habit-forming. That may also be its limitation. Those wanting a more involved strategy game may not like it - but if you are looking for something on the level of risk, this game is fun and does not involve a huge investment in time in terms learning how to play it.

Not Quite Ready

It is too bad that this turn-based strategy game has so many faults because it is a truely great attempt at filling a void in Mac strategy gaming. It has many problems though: the map is too crowded with information and sometimes overlaps data; popups (for bomb runs) covers the map beneath the popup which often hides essential information; borders between sections are sometimes difficult to understand; here is no section information or unit information on the map; the english descriptions of units and the tutorial are badly badly written; and worst of all, there is no documentation for the game leaving it to guesswork by the user to figure out what the icons mean, what the offense/defense values of units are, etc., etc. And these are only the major problems. Some of these problems can be solved by incorporating a zoom feature, others by a thoughtful rewrite.

If you are a long time strategy gamer, you will probably figure out most about how the game works but the lack of clear explainations and the lack of documentation is a serious defect. This game needs docs. Perhaps someone who understands this game and the others in the series (Euorpean War 2 & 3) will write one for the rest of us. Overall however, what do we expect for our $3 bucks? It is still worth the price. but would be worth thrice the cost for better written software and documentation.

And BTW, the music track is the same one used in Assault Commander Ultimate and Armament 2028.

Good Strategy Game Despite Errors

Basically, a (mediocre) rip-off of Axis & Allies (which is what I was looking for when I stumbled on to this one). Overall, it has many very nice qualities strategy wise: reminiscent of some Avalon Hill Turn Based Strategy Games. But in the end, it’s much simpler and doesn’t have a lot of bells or whistles. Biggest error I found: Screen won’t maximize, buttons refuse to click if you attempt to use Full Screen mode - game difficult to play and see in regular screen mode. I also wish you could bypass the “AI Players Turn” somehow. Another improvement would be “mouse over help” on some of the items and men. There’s not much in the way of explanation as to what all the little symbols mean, you have to learn by trial and error. HATE HATE HATE the new units purchase screen system. It’s cumbersome and very “back anf forth - back and forth - back and forth - too much clicking required. But aside from the carpal tunnel I’m now suffering from - the game itself is worth the price. But no more without some additional fixes and enhancements.
