The digital edition is beautiful on my tablet - a great new way to read my favorite magazine!
The magazine, for what its worth, is pretty good. They cover games that are fairly mainstream but provide some interesting insights and announcements for outsiders like me (I mainly play metroidvanias and indie titles). As well, I really like the pc build guides and motherboard showcases and the like. Furthermore, the layout is appealing and easy to shift around with your eyes.
Generally, I think its a good buy. Just don’t get a trial and forget about it like me.
So, PC vs iPad -- it looks fantastic. PC Gamer is one of the few print subscriptions I've kept, but after seeing this, I'm going to digital only. Some reasons I've kept it:
1. No shock ads. All the ads in an issue are either interesting or skippable, but never nauseating. I wish other magazines would do this.
2. There is always some new game I've never heard of that interests me.
3. Reviews and previews of the games I've heard of are written up well, with plenty of pictures
4. Some sort of clever aside is on every page. Just about every inset picture has a fun caption.
5. Indie games get covered, as well as downloadable content.
Heck, may as well make a guess. DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder is an indie game coming out soon, a follow-up to the greatest puzzle game series of all time. I'll bet PC Gamer is on-the-ball enough to cover it.
If you have a PC, and play games on it, this magazine is highly recommended. It's been one of my favorites for over a decade, and the digital version looks even better than the print version (on the new ultra-resolution iPad).
EDIT -- One drawback to the digital version is that it arrives more than a week after the print edition. If you like getting a magazine when it comes out, stick with the print version.
On the Kindle Fire, most text was readable without zoom. However, there were more than a few pages that needed a pinch to zoom to become readable. On a bigger tablet, this might not be a problem. It wasn't a big deal for me and the app automatically zooms out when you flip the page.
When subscribing, Amazon delivers the current edition to your Kindle Fire in less than 5 minutes over wi-fi.
PC Gamer has a reputation of delivering high quality content and tools. They lived up to their reputation with their electronic edition. This magazine is a steal at $1.99/month.
