Beware! : It says "NOT SUPPORT NOTEBOOK" - "IT DID NOT APPEAR ON THE BIOS UNDER AHCI MODE" but I could see it in Windows 10.
I purchased 2 of Plextor M8Pe NVMe SSDs trough Amazon.(256 GB and 512 GB)I kept both of the items until I purchased a brand new laptop from MSI : GE73 Raider RGB 8RF a couple of days ago.Today, I opened one of Plextor M8Pe (512 GB) to bring it to local MSI service center to have it installed in my new laptop along with Samsung 860 Pro 512 GB (2.5" SSD). It took several hours for them to call me and tell, "This drive (Plextor M8Pe) cannot be recognized by the laptop." He continued "We tried to change the sockets (MSI GE73 Raider RGB 8RF has 2 M2 sockets : one for NVMe SSD only and another combined one for either NVMe SSD or M2 SSD) and tried other NVMe SSDs on my laptop to find out what was the problem. He told me that there was no problem with my laptop but the Plextor M8Pe could not be recognized properly on the BIOS.I was greatly discouraged until I find something saying "Not Support Notebook" on the front surface of the product case.(See the pictures : both 256 GB and 512 GB versions all have same remarks on their front surface.)Oh my God!! What a disaster is this to see that caution just today!!I think Amazon should have informed this important information or warning to the customers before they make a decision to go with this.I couldn't have imagined an NVMe SSD which could not be installed on a laptop!! And I remember I also read several remarks in Q & A and the customer reviews that this SSD could be installed in a laptop without a problem. Then what is it that the manufacturer wrote "Not Support Notebook" in small characters??I wonder if I can return them and get refund. I couldn't imagine it does "NOT SUPPORT NOTEBOOKS"While I still could installed them on a modern motherboards for a new desktop PC, currently I have no urgent need to upgrade my PC. What I expected before purchase was just a reliable NVMe SSD with nice performance and a heatsink. But what if it cannot be installed on my brand new laptop??Customers should be aware of this limitation before they make a decision to order this item.I think Amazon or any seller should make it clear to the customers at least from now on.I still wonder what would be the problem in my case : a defective NVMe SSD? or a compatibility issue limiting its usage on laptops? : may I issue an RMA or get refund?This may be my first frustration from hundreds of Amazon purchases.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Update : Sep 19, 2018------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Today, I visited the local Plextor RMA center with 2 of Plextor M8PeGs I purchased on Amazon ( 1 of PX-512 and 1 of PX-256) to examine whether they are defective.The engineer confirmed me that the two products are under World-Warranty. He connected PX-512 to his testing PC and showed me it was recognized normally. I opened the PX-256 and asked him to examine it too. He connected PX-256 and showed me it is normally recognized.He told me that some systems (including laptop) may not display the presence of M8PeG in the BIOS screen but during the Windows 10 installation procedure the NVMe SSD drive can be properly recognized by the OS and Windows can be successfully installed on it. To make it brief, he told me that BIOS cannot show the presence of M8PeG but Windows OS or Windows installation media can show the presence of M8PeG.While Plextor RMA center confirmed me that both of my M8PeGs are normally recognized by Windows 10 OS on their test PC, I took them to MSI service center with my new laptop (MSI GE73 Raider RGB 8RF). I asked them to install a Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB NVMe SSD and a Plextor PX-512 M8PeG NVMe SSD. I bought a Samsung 970 Pro at my local store a few days ago because I believed the Plextor M8PeG cannot properly be recognized by my laptop and I have no time to visit MSI service center for installation over and over again.After 15 to 20 minutes, the engineer brought my laptop to me and showed that all of the two NVMeSSDs are properly recognized on the BIOS screen. But then, he continued, "Plextor M8PeG can be seen by the BIOS only when the RST mode was selected. With AHCI mode, Plextor M8PeG cannot be seen on BIOS." "Samsung 970 Pro was shown under both AHCI and RST mode." "Unless you use RAID setup, AHCI mode is recommended and the Plextor M8PeG may not be see on the BIOS." "But anyway, you may be able to install Windows 10 on your Plextor NVMe SSD."I asked him to let examine whether M8PeG can be properly recognized during the Windows 10 installation process using a USB flash drive. I put a USB stick containing Windows 10 installation media onto my laptop and then I could see all 3 of my SSDs (Samsung 970 Pro NVMe SSD / Samsung 860 Pro SATA SSD / Plextor M8PeG NVMe SSD) were properly recognized. Then I came back home with my laptop and began Windows 10 installation. I installed Windows 10 on Samsung 970 Pro and I'm planning to use PX-512 M8PeG for data backup. Anyway It seems that PX-512 M8PeG is now recognized by Windows 10 while it is still not visible on BIOS screen under AHCI selected mode.Conclusion :1) Plextor PX-512 M8PeG or PX-256 M8PeG may not be shown on BIOS in certain systems.2) Although they are not identifiable on the BIOS, the Windows OS or other OS can recognize them properly and make use of them.3) BIOS with AHCI option may not visualize M8PeG but BIOS with RST option can visualize M8PeG4) Plextor customer support center and even local RMA center told me that "Not support notebook" does not mean that it is unusable on notebooks. They told me that when installation onto a laptop was not limited due to the presence of a heatsink, Plextor M8PeGs were functioning normally.5) So I think the remark should be modified as "Heatsink can be affect installation onto certain laptops"Until today, Plextor customer center contacted me by several e-mails and I appreciate their service.I'd like to say I've followed all those time consuming process in order to find what was the problem and show it to other customers.----------------------------------------------------------------p.s.) I added photos to show the result of Crystal DiskMark : ★★ From left to right - Samsung 970 Pro 512 GB / Plextor M8PeG 512 GB (MBR) / Plextor M8PeG (GPT, after re-initialization) / Samsung 860 Pro 512 / Samsung 860 Pro 512 (after re-initialization) / Kingstone 256(preinstalled). ★★ The sequential write speed of M8PeG 512 was about half of that of 970 Pro, even after conversion to GPT partition and formatting. Also the temperature of idling M8PeG was about 5 degrees(C) higher than the 970 Pro where the OS was installed. I think I hoped a bit more from Plextor. When I purchased M8PeG, the price was significantly lower than 960 Pro. As the prices of Samsung NVMe SSDs are significantly reduced recently, I may go further for Samsung 970 Pro or Evo series. I think 970 Pro is definitely a better choice in terms of compatibility, speed and temperature beside its price. The 970 Pro series use 3D MLC V-NAND but the successors of Plextor NVMe SSDs use only TLC NAND (M8PeG with MLC is now discontinued by the manufacturer.). As the price gap gets closer, Samsung 970 Pro may become the reasonable and the better choice.While I think I can install Windows on M8PeG, I changed from 1 star to 3 stars.I think more refined information should be given to the customers.

Excellent all-around characteristics, ships with heat sink (most of the other NVMe devices do not). Does not take the speed crown (the MyDigitalSSD is faster, but runs hot and will quickly throttle to a lower cap of 1.4 GB/sec). Performance is in the top quartile of the scale and the temperature is well regulated due to the heat sink. I would rate this device near the top, just behind Samsung's offerings.

There is one throttling issue. In long random read testing the device will throttle to 76C, and the firmware throttles a bit too much. It drops from 1.4 GB/sec all the way down to 177 MB/sec for 10 seconds, then back to 1.4 GB/sec for 30 seconds, and repeats. I'm not docking them a star for this behavior for several reasons. First, they ship with a heat sink and most other M.2 devices do not. Second, it takes a while to hit this behavior. Third, they throttle at 77C which is nice and conservative, meaning less chance of early flash failures due to heat, and other M.2 devices (the Toshiba and the MyDigitalSSD) throttle at much higher temperatures. Plextor is giving its customers a gift by throttling at 77C, I can't dock them for it even though they could do with an adjustment. No need to throttle all the way down to 177MB/sec for short bursts :-).

SPECIAL NOTES ON THE PLEXTOR

* Consistent sequential write bandwidth (16GB, QD1) of 656 MB/s)

* Consistent random read results.

* Slow temperature ramp (good), no immediate throttling after stabilization at 77C
during read test (but it takes a while for it to get to 77C). Note that
the Plextor was the only NVMe device to ship with a heat sink, so this
is the expected result. However, it did start to throttle when I let the test
run significantly longer (see above). I don't consider it a show-stopper though.

* Nice chipset queue setup for a M.2 device (16/16 instead of
8/8 or 7/7).

Fast NVMe m.2 drive with a heatsink to keep the controller cooler. This drive uses Toshiba MLC NAND (15nm) flash memory coupled with a Marvel controller. MLC NAND is known for it's increased wear durability over TLC or Samsung v-nand. This is a speedy drive yielding the numbers in reality that they talk about on the stats for this drive with a fresh Win10 install. So far so good.. it's only been one day. :)

Two things to note though:

1) The Plextor logo at post time adds about 3 or 4 seconds to your boot times when "Storage Boot Options Control" is set to Legacy. You can disable this but see below.
2) The only way to get this drive to show up to my Gigabyte Aorus Z270X Gaming 8 motherboard (bios F7beta) was under the BIOS tab to make sure that "Storage Boot Options Control" is set to "Legacy" (and NOT UEFI). That is the default option so the drive should be visible to the BIOS on a fresh build. You need to keep this option set in order for the windows8/10 installer to see the drive (no extra drivers were needed for me during the install though). Once windows was loaded I switched that setting back to UEFI for fast posting. It works great!

NOTE: the Aorus Z270x BIOS will still not show anything in "Peripherals" --> "NVMe Configuration" section but as long as you can see the Plextor M8Pe as the primary boot target (in the "BIOS" tab) and you see the Plextor splash screen each time when you post you are fine for a windows8/10 install.

Pretty good drive.
I have a z170 motherboard, has no problem recognizing and setup.
Did some copying test, I noticed this driver is much faster (400m-600m/s) comparing my other Sata SSD (60m-80m/s). Also bigger file seems has better speed. Window OS boot time probably improved by 10% (I had Samsung 840 Evo). Loaded up picture faster too.

Benchmark showed 2000m/s write speed, that's probably just theoretical value.

Looks sleek with heatsink.

The M9 series is coming out with 3D NAND, so maybe hold onto your money or wait for this one's price to drop.

The M8Pe has a heatspreader which helps to keep it from throttling itself. So far I haven't noticed any throttling issues. Mine is also directly under the graphics card on my MSI B350M Gaming Pro, which I would assume is giving it a fair amount of extra warmth. But that aside, the drive is fantastic.

UEFI recognized it instantly and I was able to install windows on it in a few minutes. Large installs are a breeze. NVMe is definitely superior to SATA III in a noticeable way. From UEFI screen to Windows login in about 3 seconds.

While it's not an EVO, it's an excellent product and looks great (if your board lets it show).

The new Intel NUC (Skull Canyon) required an M-2 "drive". Since I will be able to add more bells and whistles to this computer in the future, this drive was what I could afford to start. Although it is reaching capacity, it is working perfectly, was very cost effective, allowed me to set up my new computer system in a timely manner and has already earned more than it's cost in increased speed (due to SSD technology). When shopping for this drive I started with the specification requirements of the Skull Canyon computer and then found the lowest cost drive that matched.

P.s. su Windows 10 funziona nativamente (Testato Build 1607 - Anniversary Update x64)
