You get what you pay for, yeah, I know. But still, Amazon could better stand behind the products it sells directly to the consumer.The thing is that I discovered two dead pixels next to each other on a brand-new screen. Not that I'm too picky. If these were just two separate dots, I wouldn't grunt that much because they wouldn’t overly strike the eye on a 4K panel. But they stick together and look more like a speck, which is really noticeable against a light background (which is, in fact, any office app these days). And, you know, this speck mysteriously makes you literally stare at it, totally against your will. So, sooner or later, you come to desire to get rid of this speck.Anyway, to make a long story short (well, okay, at least a little bit shorter), I decided to replace the monitor and reached out to Amazon customer support. I was pretty sure that since I bought it from Amazon itself, the replacement wouldn’t be an issue.Yeah, right, something should always hit the fan when I happen to be nearby. So, this guy (or was it a gal, I really don't know) asked me to hold the line while checking some of their cookbooks, and then declared something to the effect that in this particular case, replacement is not an option. I have to request a refund and then order another monitor if I still wish to roll this dice.Seriously? I mean, it's almost like Bezos himself was standing behind the counter selling me his stuff, and the stuff turned out to be faulty. And now old Jeff says: "Sorry, bro, you've got either to go through the refund process (and stay without a monitor for another unknown amount of time, doing your job on a tiny 14-inch laptop—who cares if your eyes are almost gone because of that?) or you can just squeeze your wallet a bit more and buy another monitor—and then anyway go through the refund process. Which I, frankly speaking, do not promise you will be smooth, but you can give it a try—we both know how lucky you are these days."Well, that's it. Am I happy? Nope, the way Amazon arranges its business these days seems somewhat annoying to me. Am I mad about the situation or the purchase as such? Again, nope. The monitor is pretty much what I expected. It's crispy sharp, which is exactly what I needed from it, because being a network engineer I deal with long config files. Anything except for the resolution was pretty much secondary for me, but all this stuff is pretty much okay. Yeah, it'd be nice if it had a USB-C hub, if it could replace a docking station, if it could do my chores and briefly whip up breakfast for me, but then again, it wouldn’t cost just $350, which is ridiculously cheap for a 4K, right?So I'm pretty much okay with the monitor, but still kinda irritated about this replacement denial. Probably for no reason at all, I expected a bit more "care and attention" from Amazon. But at the end of the day, why should they? We're not friends, after all. I must just learn this lesson and pay more attention to other retailers in the future.
