5.0 out of 5 starsI miss the mini-map

Game play thus far is pretty much on par with previous games in the FarCry franchise. I wanted to give it 4 and a half stars because it's not quite at a full five-star level; just a few minor nit-picky flaws. I love that it takes place in the U.S.! The environment feels like any of a hundred places that I have been to up in the mountains. Some evangelicals or preppers may object to this game if they perceive that they are being portrayed as a bunch of nut jobs. But the bad guys in this game are are a cult, not actually religious. They are truly creepy and evil.
Although the story situation is interesting, the character you play lacks any kind of personality. He is nameless and seems to have no skin in the game; no personal vested interest in fighting this war other than just doing his job as a young deputy.
Some differences that I noticed right away:
- You can customize the gender, race, and overall look of your character. Not that you really ever see him/her but some people will like this.
- There is NO MiniMap! I am not sure why they did away with this? To make a more "realistic" experience? I thought it might be an option that could be turned back on in the settings but no; the mini map is not there. This makes can hard to locate and loot dead enemies and animals. The dead do not have that visual "glow" like in previous games, so good luck finding them in the dense brush.
- The game is too easy at the beginning and there was no option at the beginning to choose the level of difficulty. I discovered that this can be changed in the options menu at any time.
- There is a noticeable delay when calling up the map, which is annoying. The map is much more beautiful, and realistic.
- Shooting an enemy disables them but there is a time in which they can be patched up and revived by their buddies. This makes the game much more realistic.
- That annoying CIA agent Willis is back and is just as arrogant in this game as in previous games.
- The map is divided into three areas and you can go into any of them right away. Unlike FC4 where you couldn't get to the north until you accomplished certain missions.
- The buddy system is awesome; especially the dog! It is similar to Primal. Although I lost him when I flew a helicopter; hope I can figure out how to get him back.
