Back in 1970 I was one of those stereo guys who bought the latest 4 channel SQ Quadraphonic equipment. One of the first Quad vinyl albums I got was Santana's ABRAXAS. The 4 channel Quad re-mix was fantastic. Wind and cymbals swirling around the room. Carlos's great solos moving from speaker to speaker with the beat. None of that happens in the original regular stereo mix. This entire album was completely re-mixed just for the Quad LP release. I thought I would never hear that great re-mix again.
Then I found this DTS 5.1 CD version of ABRAXAS here on Amazon. I never knew they could do 5.1 discrete channels on a basic CD, but they obviously can. I bought this DTS 5.1 version and played it. Instant memories of 1970 flew through my head as I heard the original 4 channel SQ Quad re-mix from way back then.
This DTS 5.1 CD will play on any DVD or BluRay player. And as long as you connect the player to the amp using a digital HDMI, Coaxial Digital or Fiber Optic cable, any of the DTS 5.1 CD's will deliver full 5.1 surround channels. An important note... the surround amp must be capable of decoding the DTS soundtrack format from movies. Most of today's newer Home Theater amp and good brand name surround amps have the Dolby Digital and DTS formats built in. This is due to the high amount of movies on DVD and BluRay that use the DTS encoding exclusively. If you only use the left and right analog audio cables, you will only hear normal 2 channel stereo. You must use a digital audio connection to hear the full DTS 5.1 surround audio.
There are two things I noticed instantly. The old SQ Quad format on vinyl was not a discrete 4 channel separation. It was a passive separation. That was because the rear 2 channels were matrixed on the front regular 2 stereo channels. But this DTS 5.1 CD is 100% discrete. like any 5.1 movie soundtrack. All 4 channels are completely independent from each other. The separation is incredible and easily noticed.
The second thing that I noticed that seemed a bit odd is the missing deep bass that I remember well in the original Quad LP and today in my MP3 download of the album. All of the other frequency response tones are very clean and crisp. But most of the bass is missing. There is a slight amount of bass heard in a few tracks, but most sound flat.
It is still worth every penny to have this old favorite Quad mix of ABRAXAS back in my library. What I do not understand is, if DTS can encode 5.1 discrete audio channels on a basic CD that plays in any CD, DVD, and BluRay player, then why doesn't the recording studios make all CD's a 4.0 or 5.1 surround mix. It seems to work very well. What are they waiting for?
i am a fan of Santana music YES but what i heard here (i have yet to really hear a true SACD to make the comparison) on this specific disc can truly be described as: magical!
Before i go any further on the format wars and sounds fidelity --blaa blab bla - i must say to really appreciate this stuff (even as a novice) you really should have a decent setup (in a car, van or at home which can play and take advantage of a DTS DISC)
Having said that many of you already have good HTR's (home theater systems) which are just fine to hear this! Your only one requirement now to make sure that your DVD/Bluray player can playback DTS and/or SACD ENCODED Discs.
So now back to the disc itself, i played this puppy on a system comprising of :
Yamaha RX-V1800BL 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black)
Oppo DV-981HD Universal DVD Player with HDMI, 1080p Up-Converting, DivX & SACD
This is not what i have Yamaha NS-SP7800PN 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package (Piano Black)
but the idea was to have a 5.1 speaker setup
I of course had my doubts since like many folks switched to their Apple iPod shuffle 2 GB Blue (4th Generation) NEWEST MODEL and SanDisk Sansa Clip+ 2 GB MP3 Player (Black) players for music! However if you think your "inner-audiophile" is acting out, you will fall in love with either SACD, DVD-A, or DTS Audio of Santana Abraxas.
Now mind you i have this title on all the other format imaginable: cd, MP3, iTunes, and Vinyl!
Folks, the mixing and fundamental difference is all in the mixing on the 5.1 just sounds engulfing! Give you a taste too, my first SACD is a Popular Classics for Spanish Guitar [Hybrid SACD ] which sounded nice and everything but did not hold a candle next to Santana on DTS! This of course most likely due to the age of the material and tapes recorded - not to mention the actual final recording.
To make it fair i will know soon enough how all this pans out after hearing/experiencing the following titles:
