This is now one of my favorites. I used to have just the Moss Elixir CD, which I already considered one of his better albums, until it got badly scratched. Therefore, getting this set--especially the second CD, the Mossy Liquor album--was a real treat! Let's start with Moss Elixir. The CD has tracks like "Devil's Radio", accented by a cool radio-demon sound effect (and an even cooler swipe at Rush Limbaugh)... "Alright Yeah", which drives forward on a rocking slide guitar riff... "Beautiful Queen", floating quickly along over snow drifts like the girl in the song, helped by some trippy vibrato guitar and cool violin work by Deni Bonet (who plays on other great tracks as well). As usual, Robyn Hitchcock's lyrics are wide-ranging--even within a single song, they can be intelligent, insightful, funny, weird, sad, awesome.

Now, the Mossy Liquor album! It's actually the older of the two albums, even though for me it's "the new one". Half of Mossy Liquor consists of alternate versions of Moss Elixir tracks. Admittedly, some of these songs were really improved by the time of Moss Elixir (for example, on Mossy Liquor, "Beautiful Queen" lacks the shimmer of the vibrato guitar, and "DiChirico Street" lacks the drama that he eventually worked into the music and singing; but still, these are good versions). However, the older "Devil's Radio" is great--not as unique as it will sound on Moss Elixir, but the Mossy Liquor version actually rocks quite a bit harder. And the version of "Alright Yeah" is...in Swedish! So that's, uh...in Swedish! The tracks unique to Mossy Liquor are where it's at, though. "Wide Open Star" and "Each of Her Silver Wands", in particular, are dreamy classics. And "Trilobite" is brilliant--but it's up there with Robyn's "Furry Green Atom Bowl" as the weirdest damn song you are ever likely to hear. Overall, both CDs are loaded with great Robyn Hitchcock.

Moss Elixir, is the cd release version of this title, and Mossy Liquor was the vinyl only release. Some of the songs differ altogether, and some are different versions. Both are well worth having.

Since I bought Mossy Liquor on vinyl all those years ago, I preferred it to it's big brother Moss Elixir.
Cool Bug Rumble is a blast. There are demo versions of songs like "Beautiful Queen" and "The Devil's Radio" that just might be better than the final versions. I think if you are a big fan you probably already have the vinyl copy. The digital version is very nice to have. I recommend it, even if you already own Moss Elixir on CD.

Well mastered, and not despite what was claimed elsewhere online a 'grey area' CD, the Wounded Bird Records ‎company specialises in releasing out of print / rare titles on CD, and this set contains the CD release of the originally vinyl only Mossy Liquor album that accompanied the release of Moss Elixir.

Moss Elixir is among Robyn's best albums, it was long my favourite album of his, now I have investigated him further I would say it is still in my Top 5 of his albums - largely because of the surreal masterpieces A Happy Bird is a Filthy Bird, and She Was Sinister But She Was Happy.

If you have never checked out Robyn in concert, you need to rectify that, and soon.

Highly recommended.

Buon cd del caro Hitchcock. Ma il capolavoro assoluto rimane "I often dream of train" geniale e visionario, gli unici notturni chopeniani del rock.........
