...This was the Yardbird's last significant studio album and it's pretty much the DEFINITIVE Yadbirds album as far as original material is concerned! Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck and Keith Relf are all present here, and the sound is pure Carnaby Street! The title tune puts the whole "Swinging London" working class-to-fame and fortune ethos in a nutshell, with a unique arrangement not found anywhere else in rock from that era, (1968). "Ha Ha, Said The Clown" revels in the circus aesthetic that was present in so much psychedelic era rock, ("Sgt. Pepper", "Strange Days", "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn", etc.) and the bluesy numbers, ("Smile On Me", "No Excess Baggage",) are also quite good. Psychedelia is represented again in "Glimpses", "Only The Black Rose" and "White Summer", the last one being pure guitar showdown, with Jimmy Page fast-picking his tukus off. All in all, I can't recommend this album enough...sure there's extraneous stuff on here, but it's a rare album that DOESN'T have any! The good FAR overshadows the mediocre, and just remember: this is the same group that spun off Renaissance, Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Jeff Beck Group, Blind Faith, Derek and The Dominoes and lord knows WHO else!
Trust me, it's a worthy representation of the Yardbirds' legacy!

To all Jimmy Page fans, if you think you have all his works and don't have "Little Games", then I recommend this you get this CD. Keep in mind it's the Yardbirds last recorded album and John Paul Jones is on a handful of the tracks. This was put together in 1968, just before the Yardbirds disbanded, which is how Led Zeppelin came to be. There are some great tracks on it including "White Summer" and "Drinking Muddy Water" studio versions. It contains a double albums worth of songs and out of that, you can condense your favorite tracks to make a great album/cd. Zep fans looking for an excuse to buy, something to add to your Led Zeppelin tangible collection, I recomend it.

Overall, the album is great. The Jimmy Page Yardbirds were the last version of the band, and every bit as good as the Clapton or Beck version, in my opinion. I had the vinyl of this album on Epic records; I believe my copy was re-processed stereo, basically a "phase shifted" version of mono but it could add some depth to the sonic quality.
The mono CD version - this one I got through Amazon - is somewhat disappointing. It has a very midrange sound; I would imagine the original mono vinyl sounded better. However, this is more a problem of CD reissues of pre-1970 mono versions of albums in general. Unless the album was incredibly successful, which this LP was not, no one will take the time to take the old analog tapes and properly engineer the songs to high digital quality. Page did it with the old Zep albums, but of course those are classics and also what he really hangs his career on. I doubt he had anything to do with the CD issue of "Little Games", which is most unfortunate because he is every bit a killer producer as he is a killer guitarist.

When this album came out in 1967, it was lost in the shuffle, because so many great albums came out that year. Flash forward to 1975, I was delivering soft water to houses. I went to service a soft water tank in this customer's garage, where he was in the process of cleaning it out. There were two boxes of record albums sitting in the corner, and he asked me if I wanted them, if not he was going to throw them out. I said hell yeah I'll take them. There were many gems in those two boxes, and one of them being this album. At this time the band was going through many changes, and in fact some of the band members were banned by the producer to appear on this record. With all these problems, the music still shines through. Jimmy Page the stalwart of the group, is just great. The song "White Summer," is an instumental that would be performed by his next group "Led Zeppelin."
The group is still evloving playing all sorts of physicdelia to standard blues covers to straight out pop. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. You really can't go wrong with any of the Yardbird's catalog. If you are unfamiliar with the group, I would start off with "Having A Rave Up," and go from there. One of the best groups to come out in the sixties.

In "Little Games" Jimmy Page plays some of the best guitar heard in any Yardbirds lineup, but the Mono tapes Sundazed used are so saturated with distortion the album is unlistenable. It's less expensive than the 2007 (Stereo) Japanese reissue, and that's all it has going for it.

I'm a Sundazed fan, but sometimes they blow it. Maybe it's time to put a period to the era of Dinosaur Rock and let albums like "Little Games" go. The 2007 Japanese reissue is probably the best this album will ever sound. Sundazed's reissue is a waste of money.

If you love the Yardbirds or Led Zepplin, then you have to have this! Many of the riffs that Paige used in Zep. have their beginnings here. The only downside to this album is one dud of a song (of course that's my taste), and it's too short. Otherwise, it's a fabulous investment!

This album academically documents the re-invented Yardbirds morphing into Led Zep, and is a must have for anyone serious about the sixties. It is a good mix, with clean sound. It's groovy, man!
