Editorial Reviews
1972 again saw the band collaborate with filmmaker Barbet Schroeder to create the soundtrack to the film La Vallee, becoming the band’s seventh studio album Obscured By Clouds. The new Discovery version presents the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie and reissued with newly designed Digipak and a new 8 page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson.
The ‘Discovery’ collection: 14 Remastered Studio Albums
Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. All 14 original Studio albums have now been painstakingly digitally remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall), and are reissued with newly crafted packaging and booklets created by the band’s long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson.
‘Discovery’ albums are designed as an introduction to the artist, with all booklets including full album lyrics.Product details

The song "Wot's...uh...the deal?" has a fantastic video on Youtube, featuring a photo montage of the recording session, which I believe is a booklet that was included with the original vinyl pressing (it does NOT come with this CD). The song is in the same vein as "In My Life" by The Beatles. Soft, sweet, and very much a surprise that Waters had anything to do with it, as his lyrics are so very often morose.
The CD itself (from this seller) is rather cheap-feeling, with the packaging (obviously) copied poorly, but the recording seems fine.
I'm enjoying it, and that's why I bought it!
It is a fact that soundtrack albums by pop artists aren't usually of the high caliber as their regular, studio album counterparts. This album is no exception. This album isn't as individualistic as other Pink Floyd albums. However, i still rate this album with 4 stars because it is a pivotal, musical and lyrical nexus between the spacey, haunting Meddle and the more urgent, contemporary electronic Dark Side Of The Moon. Obscure By Clouds definitely paved the way, musically and lyrically, for things to come!
Obscured By Clouds was actually the soundtrack to the film, La Vallee, by Barbet Schroeder. This was the second film by Schroeder to incorporate Pink Floyd's music (the first being the soundtrack to More). The film takes place in the primitive (but many times beautiful) regions of New Guinea. Pink Floyd's music lends itself well to this film.
Musically, the album starts out with the title track. It is an instrumental which incorporates many of the synthesizers and electronics as their next album, Dark Side Of The Moon. In fact, this instrumental could have easily fit, stylewise, on the Dark Side album. Some of the other important tracks are as follows: Burning Bridges- a slow, bluesy ballad with the trademark "bending of the notes" by David Gilmour on his guitar. There is also a beautiful interplay between Gilmour's and Wright's vocals, similar to Time from Dark Side... and Echoes from Meddle. Especially nice is the harmonization between the two of them. The Gold It's In The... is a power rocker sung by Gilmour. Wots... Uh The Deal is a beautiful, introspective ballad incorporating descending chord progressions. It is my favorite track from the album. Childhood"s End is still another rocker sung by Gilmour. This particular track is somwhat reminiscent of Money from Dark Side.... Free Four is Roger Water's only lead vocal contribution to this album. This song contains lyrical references to dying. Finally, Stay is a seductive, slow ballad sung by Rick Wright (with a nice wah-wah pedal guitar by Gilmour.
The most crucial aspects of this album are the lyrics provided by Roger Waters (with the exception of Childhood's End). This is the first time where where cynicism plays prominently into the lyrical content of a Pink Floyd album. This cynical trend was to increase on each successive album from here on out.
Even though this album isn't quite as innovative or progressive as other Pink Floyd albums, I would still recommend it, "Cos there's a chill wind blowing in my soul and I think I'm growing old."
was life changing! I've been Floydian ever since.
James Guthrie and Joel Plante have done a superb job on this great album, there is so much more to listen to now imo. Now there is crisp clean music to lose yourself in (all over again for me). I'm really glad I waited until recently before I began ordering Pink Floyd's back catalogue. Each new James Guthrie album remaster I listen to is magic to my ears.
I find this era (1968-1972) of Floyd to be more interesting to listen to than work from say Dark Side on, certainly more experimental and extreme. It's a forty year loop that I'm happy to be on, renewing my listening pleasure with a classic Floyd album (and yes, it will always be an album). The packaging on these remasters is generally good with the exception of NOT having plastic sleeves for the cds. How can the Japanese have sleeves and not the rest of the world?
This is a highly recommended album, and as good as anything that followed it.
I don't know why, but for some reason, I think of Summer when I hear this; bright sunny days, warm nights, all the good things. The opener, the title track, has a sound that seems to fly through the stratosphere, parting the clouds. You almost feel airborne while listening. And it keeps up the high quality throughout, with melodic ballads ("Burning Bridges", "Wot's The Deal," "Stay"), harder edged rock (The Gold, is in the...", "Childhood's End"), the emotional instrumental "Mudmen," and a lot of folks don't agree, but "Absolutely Curtains" is absolutely beautiful. The second half is a little strange, the tribal voices just go on, but diametrically opposed parts make interesting listening. Two examples of this working elsewhere, would be Fleetwood Mac's "Oh, Well," and "Mother People," by The Mothers Of Invention. Parts that don't seem to belong together, sometimes do work well together, as is the case here. You hear droning keyboard chords, somber melodies, cymbal rolls, light guitar notes, the sudden release of melodic tension, and a seemingly eternal fade-out, and then these hideous voices start to sing this apparent gibberish, a little unsettling, but somehow complimentary.
And I really do like it.

Très bon tout de même avec Gilmour et Waters en pleine forme ainsi que les autres membres du groupe.
