ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL-TIME GETS BEAUTIFUL STEREO REMIX
5 Stars
ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL-TIME GETS BEAUTIFUL STEREO REMIX
The Beatles' "Revolver" from 1966 reveals a band firing on all 4-cylinders with a producer in George Martin and a young, adventurous engineer, Geoff Emerick, that were able to bring the band's ideas to full fruition. This is an album (and single) full of amazing John Lennon-Paul McCartney compositions, 3 gems from George Harrison, and a kiddies-singalong that is sung beautifully by Ringo Starr in his own unique and honest voice. Ringo, by the way, on this album, shows why he is the most influential drummer of all-time. This package (Super Deluxe - 5 cds) starts with Disc #1 which is the new stereo remix of the classic 1966 album. The hard left/right panning of the original stereo mix is gone. What remix producer and engineer, Giles Martin and Sam Okell, respectively, bring to the 2022 remix is a well-balanced sound using the full spectrum of the stereo picture. This new remix reveals more presence in the vocals and instruments. Ringo's drums come alive. Paul's amazing bass guitar parts, among the very tastiest of all-time by anybody, are heard in more detail. The strings on "Eleanor Rigby" put the listener on the floor of the EMI studio. The backwards lead guitar parts on "I'm Only Sleeping" are clearer than ever. The horns on "Got To Get You Into My Life" are brassier and heavier than the original '66 mix. The tape loops and backwards lead guitar on Lennon’s “Tomorrow Never Knows” come at you from left and right in a non-stop elixir that’s like the audio equivalent of painting in free form style. Even "Yellow Submarine", with the backup harmonies split over the 2-channel stereo field, reveals more layers of harmonies than ever heard before. Extra EP of "Paperback Writer" and "Rain", in both the new stereo remix and original analog mono, now pop out of the speakers in the 2022 remix. "Rain", in particular, finally brings John Lennon's psychedelically-channeled vocal to the stereo center where it belongs. This package also includes 3 more discs of the original 1966 mono mix sourced from the original analog tape, plus 2 cds of alternate takes, working versions and alternate mono mixes, all worthy additions. The gorgeous and informative 100-page hardcover book that accompanies this sumptuous edition is alone worthy of the price of admission. This Super Deluxe of REVOLVER is highly recommended. If you're a Beatlesfan, a MUST BUY.

What a great job they did with this re-issue. It's above and beyond any version previously released, in my opinion. Clarity and definition like I've never heard from this album, all while still sounding warm. I have both the CD and the vinyl, and both are great.

FANTASTIC BOXED SET!
Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2022
I've bought the previous box sets, except for Let it Be. I'd say overall, it compares well with the other box sets, except for the glaring omission of a 5.1 mix on DVD. The new stereo mix fixes the poor balance found on the stereo mix. That's why the mono version was preferred, so you didn't have problems like the bass confined to one channel. The new mix doesn't really sound that different musically, although on a song like "For no One", I noticed for the first time it was harpsichord AND piano. Overall, the new stereo mix made listening this through headphones, much more enjoyable. The sonic image is overall more distinct as well.

As with the other box sets, the Beatles' recording and compositional process is laid bare. Nowhere was this better exemplified than on George's Love You To. You start out hearing George play the song on acoustic guitar, and singing, in D minor. Next, there's a solo instrumental of George playing his sitar part in C minor. Then you hear sitar, tanpura, tabla, with an acoustic guitar, and some unused high harmonies Paul sang on the chorus. The fast alap at the songs ending, is extended.
There's a nice sequence for the writing and layering of sound effects on Yellow submarine. In fact, there are tons of surprises in store, that I won't ruin. Isn't it fantastic we can hear a 56yo album in a new way?

I really enjoyed the beautiful hard back book. It details the explosion of cultural sophistication the Beatles went through at this time. George meeting Ravi for the first time. Paul learning about French dada painters ( Magritte) and writers ( Jarry). John painting, reading, relaxing. Also it covered the roll that the Indica gallery and bookstore played with their intellectual development. Also it documented the cross fertilization between Revolver, and Aftermath, Pet Sounds, and the Stax sound. Throw in Tim Leary's book, dropping acid in LA with the Byrds, classical and a avant garde music, and you get Revolver.
The book also provides an up to date, detailed analysis of each song, just like the other books for the box sets do. They throw in the mono mix, and a "CD single" of the Rain/Paperback Writer 45, and that's that.

Unless you one of those guys who hates everything after Rubber Soul, then you're sure to appreciate the contents of the box.
There's one for you 19 for me.

They were in a 1950's studio. 2 track recording all the way to Abby Road. Ever notice the HUGE difference in the sound of that compared to all the rest? They gutted the studio and installed state of the art recording equipment. NOW.....listening to this recording of Revolver makes me feel it was possibly the BEST album they made. Starts of with a slam bang Harrison song "Taxman". Ends with Lennon's masterpiece "Tomorrow never knows". A song with basically 1 chord "C":. That Album was a lesson in "Less is more" as in bells and whistles. Just songs that could by played live. Well most of them. Money well spent. Cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beatles Revolver. Best stereo version yet.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 26, 2024
People may or may not know, but back in the 60s the stereo versions the the Beatles albums were mixed not by the group but by the engineers. Why? Stereo wasn't yet "the thing". The Beatles supervised the Mono master, then went. Giles Martin (son of George M), has now started to mix them, from the master tapes, in true stereo. And he's done an excellent job.
Until this release the very best sound on Revolver was the mono version in the mono box set. Go listen to how McCartney & Ringo play together on that. Superb. Now we have an equally fine stereo mix.
A HIGHLY recommended album. Some rate this higher than Abbey Road, Peppers, or the White Album. They may be right.
