For those rockers that also grew up during those times, I'm sure you remember the first Boston album came out during the rise of Disco -- the Dark Ages of music. Boston was a breath of fresh air and assured us that even with Disco dominating the airways, there was still something right with the music of that time. It further assured us that our era would not be defined by a guy in a white suit, dancing on a lighted floor. I'm sure, many if not most of us wore out our first Boston album on our now-looked-upon-as-crude turntables, with our diamond-tipped styli ripping through the vinyl album. It is easily one of the greatest albums of all time. Don't Look Back was a worthy successor to the first.
Third Stage is, well, Boston's third album. Not much to say beyond that. It's Boston, through and through.
Now, my rant. Why so long? I understand Tom Scholz' desire for 'perfection'. But how much music have we lost because of his stubbornness? Personally, I don't care too much about Sib, Fran and Barry. Boston is, was, and will always be Scholz and Delp. Tom's sound and Brad's vocals. The other guys are easily replaceable. And I didn't want them to put out cookie-cutter sound every six months just for the sake of releasing something. But years and years between albums was frustrating. And now Brad is gone and there will never be any more music from Boston. Tom can try and find a sound-alike, but it will never be Brad; he can add more and more layers of vocals and guitar riffs, but More Than a Feeling will never sound the same again.
Anyway, if you're a Boston fan, buy this album. Although, it should now be called "The Final Stage."
R.I.P, Brad.
Anyway, while listening to "Third Stage," I felt like I was experiencing the memories of Tom and Brad and the rest of the Boston guys. Especially through Hollyann. Now that I'm getting a little older, I can't help but look back on the days of my youth through, if not rose-colored glasses, at least the watery, smooth and blurred finish of an impressionist painting. With Hollyann, I can almost see the couple standing proudly, hair flying in the breeze, perhaps watching the setting sun and standing for what they believed so strongly.
On the other side, Amanda, To Be a Man and Still In Love seem to be, partly, about the struggle to do right over wrong, to fight for love and for those you love.
Beauty, fun, introspection, love, sacrifice... the stuff of life. Also, the stuff of "Third Stage." If you like the unique Boston sound, "Third Stage" is a must-have for your CD case. Although, I still have my tape!!
Also, "Third Stage" is the third release by Boston featuring lead singer Brad Delp who was IMO the true voice of Boston. His death in 2007 left, again IMO, an unfillable chasm in the group's sound most likely never to be fully replaced.
The songs range from sweet ballads like Amanda and Hollyanne to harder rocking tunes like We're Ready and Cool the Engines. I like the mellow, perhaps mature sound of Boston in this album. Though it's certainly not the same as earlier works, the classic Boston sound is there and is well worth adding to my collection.

UPDATE: 6-9-2017
I found a used copy from a seller that Amazon fulfilled the order on, so no shipping charges and came in two days. This copy is the real deal. I compared the two albums side by side. The one sold as new is a reissue, not an original pressing as described. Two ways to tell for sure is the vinyl on the new one is slightly translucent, not opaque as it should for the year it supposedly came out. Another way is that the album cover on the new one has slightly different text and text size in places like the lyric sheet and back cover. Any way the used one plays great, no warping, no skips and very little surface noise. I'm keeping the first one, I may frame it as the warping has gotten worse, not better as I had hoped, so it'll be a piece of memorabilia I can hang on my wall ;)
