Editorial Reviews

Through the writing of these songs and the making of this music, I found my way back to the world around me – a way to reach nature and the people I love and care about. This record is a sensory exploration that allowed for a connection to a consciousness that I was searching for. Through the resonance of sound and a beaten up old piano I bought in Camden Market while living in a city I had no intention of staying in, I found acceptance and a way of healing.” Beth Orton describes Weather Alive, her most personal album to date, as “a collaboration with time – of someone struggling to make sense. And in that struggle, something beautiful got made.” For Orton, music re-emerged in the past several years as a tethering force, even when her own life felt more tumultuous than ever. After wrestling with mysterious health issues for years, she turned a major corner in 2014 when at long last she received a correct diagnosis and was able to begin managing her condition with medication. However, Orton found this newfound clarity almost as disempowering as the mystery of her inexplicable illness because it waylaid her sense of self, and when strange occurrences persisted, she was only able to process them through long periods of making music at the upright piano installed in a shed in her garden. These sessions in solitude turned into the eight-track Weather Alive, the first album Orton has self-produced in her 30-year career. The piano spoke to Orton, holding an emotional resonance she wasn’t able to explore with guitar. Indeed, the first notes of the album-opening title track usher the listener into an expansive, emotive and dream-like world of sound with little precedence in Orton’s prior work, and through the writing of these songs and the making of this music, Orton found her way back to the world around her. Orton’s close collaborators on Weather Alive include Tom Skinner (Sons of Kemet, The Smile) on drums and Tom Herbert on bass, with additional players adding nuance and color to the music: Shahzad Ismaily on guitar, drums, harmonica, bass and Moog, Sam Beste on vibraphone, Francine Perry on synths, and Alabaster dePlume on saxophone. 1 Weather Alive 2 Friday Night 3 Fractals 4 Haunted Satellite 5 Forever Young 6 Lonely 7 Arms Around a Memory 8 Unwritten

We were lucky to see Beth at Big Ears and we were just there !
Beth, do not stop.
You have a place in this musical world like Kate Bush and you need to stay the course.
This album paves the way.

I have 2 of Beth Orton's CDs, and I love them. When I saw her new one was out, I didn't hesitate for a minute to order. Her music is still haunting, different, special, which is why I love it. Her lyrics are unique, mystical, and deep; another reason I love her songs. On this CD, though, it is so hard to understand what she is saying. Even with the written lyrics in hand, it's all I can do to comprehend her message. I've heard these new songs dozens of times, and I still find it next to impossible to hear the words. Hopefully on her next CD she'll focus more on making the words understandable.

I’ve been following Beth Orton since Trailer Park, and have never been disappointed by her releases, but this one blows me away more than ever before. On the surface the music here sounds dark and sad; but the deeper you listen, the more you realize there’s really a deep sense of joy in it. Like looking back on a rich life full of well-learned lessons, and feeling a sense of satisfaction as a consequence. I’m not sure if that is what Beth was going for, but this music makes me feel warm and happy— with something new discovered with every listen. It doesn’t try to imitate anything from her back catalogue— it’s its own world. So, don’t approach it expecting trip hop, or acoustic folk or anything. Just listen and reside in the musical world that was created. It’s her best musical journey yet.

I fell in love with her music with my discovery of "Trailer Park"

In this recording, she takes a hard left turn into a moody, nearly avantgarde approach. Those of you familiar with Johnette Napoleon (of Concrete Blonde) will recognize her phrasing, breathing, and tone.

The tunes are mesmerizing, hypnotic, and sometimes soothing, though the words are often not.

Take some time, "in between the sound machine", and give it a good listen.

BTW, it's glorious on vinyl if you have the hardware. I'm sure it's just as lovely streamed.

Amazing record. She shifts her sound from the chemical beats of yore to some Mark Hollis-style talk-talk-in'. Voice so raw it cuts to the bone. Same drummer from Radiohead offshoot The Smile. Beautiful.

Dark music - the way i like it. Beth puts out a great effort on this album and the best I have listened to. Another welcome addition to my kick back and or sombre music.

Really enjoyed this. I had written off Beth many years ago as being a bit of a one trick come down pony - with some great singles - Someone's daughter etc. But a bit dated with all that 90s electronica, that has been surpassed so much in recent years. However - this LP is outstanding - Friday Night is the bit hit and by far the magical number. I really love the lyrics and vibes. However the rest of the LP is similar in tone - very little of that early 90s low rent dubby semi-stoned middle class backing - and instead a lovely jazzy, electronic, piano led beauty. I went back to explore recent LPs on the back of this. 10/10
