I have read a few Linwood Barclay novels in the past, and have thoroughly enjoyed each one. He has always delivered great plots, interesting characters, excellent prose, and just the right degree of tension. Each time I’ve put one down, I resolve to read another, soon – and never do. Why? Whywhywhy? Well, generally I don’t usually enjoy stand-alone novels. I’m mostly into crime fiction series…Ian Rankin, William Shaw, Mark Billingham, Deon Meyer. And spy fiction series. So I go years sometimes before returning to Barclay and a few others. Maybe I won’t wait so long next time. Not after “Find You First” (FYF). I happened to read a plot summary. I can’t resist a list of targeted victims; I was hooked. I’m ashamed to admit I even liked the killers. Can’t wait to see who will play them in the movie.

I assume you know the plot. A millionaire exec is told he has a terminal disease, an especially debilitating one. Years ago he was a sperm donor, multiple times. He wants to connect with “the kids”. So does someone else.

I haven’t read many books this year that I was anxious to pick up and get back to. FYF is the big exception, not because of any big cliff-hangers, nor cheap thrills. Just very good writing. No stupid twists, just plausible surprises and misdirections, and lots of suspects. FYF made up for a lot of big name 2021 disappointments and some over-hyped yawners in the first half. I’m sure there’s another Barclay out there for me to do the same in the last six months of the year.

So, after you put FYF for the last time, tell me you’re not going to see the movie, because as we both know, we just can’t miss that scene coming down the staircase…..

This was a good book but not great. I really like Linwood Barclay books, but this one did not have the suspense that the other ones did. I liked the supporting characters better than the main characters. Chloe’s personality was a smart mouth and bad language but had her sweet moments and Mile’s, who you would expect to be powerful and confident, was not. Given his disease I’m sure it would change who you are to a degree but his was a full 360 degree. He had money and people who worked for him and they got and did what he needed but felt he was not a strong main character. There were twists and turns in the book that held your interest and that’s why the 4 star rating.

This thriller has everything a thriller should have, and more. Along with the cruelty and violence, there’s heartache and a curious kind of happiness. The cast of characters includes a super-villain, a she-devil, a fraudster, more than one killer for hire, and several heroic figures who have no idea they are going to be heroic. There are enough murders to satisfy the most blood-thirsty reader.

The story opens with Miles Cookson, a fabulously rich tech guy, finding out that he has a devastating and fatal disease — and it’s hereditary. So he sets out to locate the offspring he must have from selling his sperm to a sperm bank twenty years back. He wants to provide for those kids, since they may be in for his illness.

This plot has twist after twist. The action is absolutely terrific. The denouement is breath-taking. The good guys are perfectly ordinary people (young and not so young) who turn out to be courageous and wonderfully resourceful — from Miles to his “daughter” Chloe to his chauffeur Charise (ex-wrestler, ex-bouncer). The villains are deep into villainy.

I can’t say enough good things about this book.

This book is okay but not great. The premise is interesting but very strange. As usual the end is unbelievable.

I really enjoyed this one. The pages practically turned themselves. Although I figured out the twist early in the book, I still found it interesting and a lot of fun. Highly recommended.

Barclay does the job right in keeping his readers on the edge of their seats. This thriller grabs you at the prologue and holds tight until the end. Not to give away too much, but I have to say this is about two rich men and how they handle their status in the world. I know which one most of you will be rooting for :) The characters were terrifically crafted as to draw you into their lives and wonder how each one would end up at the ending of the book. Human beings can be so cruel, greedy, and then there's the flip side of those people. Find out who's who. You won't be disappointed. I'm ready for the next book, Mr. Barclay! Warrning: there is some language that might be offensive to some. I usually 'skip' right over and go on. Not enough to take me away from a good story in this book.

I always look forward to reading these books. The stories are so unpredictable. Just when you think you have the plot straight in your mind, it suddenly turns on its head. Excitement to the very end. Keep then coming.

A very ingenious plot with no lack of suspects as to who might be trying to eliminate a list of heirs to a great fortune. Quite a bit of misdirection before you guess the true villian but the true hero of the book is a dying man who wants to help others.
