In her relationship with Charles that has survived for more than forty years, Camilla’s story has seen a great many myths. This book is the definitive account.

The relationship between Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, is one of the most remarkable love stories of the age. It has endured against all the odds, and in the process nearly destroyed the British monarchy. It is a rich and remarkable story that has never been properly told – indeed, it is one of the most extraordinary, star-crossed love stories of the past fifty years.

This was a fascinating and interesting portrait of an amazing woman. Reviled by many, the ugly truth of Prince Charles' first marriage is briefly touched upon here. It left him hurt and wounded in more ways than one. It is interesting to note that close friends encouraged the two to reconnect. The Duchess of Cornwall is a warm, loving, down to earth lady who lived a life filled with friends and family. Despite her determination to woo and win the young Andrew Parker Bowles, (which she did), Charles was the love of her life and he was heartbroken when she married. Andrew cheated on her repeatedly. I believe you should read her story to find out what happened after Charles and Diana were forced toghether. The public was not aware of how bad things had gotten until later. It was also sad to learn how his parents declined to support him. Camilla is really his best friend and supporter. I was also interested in learning about how she supports her charities, putting the focus on the causes and bringing many disparate agencies together for the common good. She is not interested in the spotlight and is happy to be herself. It is a fair and balanced portrait and I had a hard time putting it down. The sections on the charities she supports is an eye opener statistic wise, the scope of the problems larger than known. I was shocked to find out how many people in British jails are illiterate.

Please note: I read this book using immersion reading while listening to the audio book. The audio version has a number of issues. Two chapters #26 Rebecca and #41 The Rubbish Pickers Wife are not in the Kindle version of the book. After Chapter 26, the chapters do not correspond to the Kindle version. Sections of text are left out and the narrator frequently adds or changes words. Many sentences are clipped short. This should be unheard of coming from a major publishing house.

This book gives us a very different story to that told by Christopher Anderson in 'Game of Crowns'. He claimed that towards the end of her life, the Queen Mother could not bear to be in the same room as Camilla, and that when the time comes, Princess Anne will not acknowledge or curtsy to Camilla. In 'The Duchess: The Untold Story', Penny Junor tells us none of this.
This new book is a serious attempt to show Camilla in a new, more favorable light, following years of scandal and hate stories. There is an extensive bibliography and Penny Junor quotes numerous people who speak favourably about Camilla. But what do the British public think ?
Here in Australia, both the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition are admitted Republicans. The PM seems to be adopting the position that nothing will be done about change until the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign, but the Leader of the Opposition says that if he wins the 2019 election, he will conduct a Referendum for Australia to become a republic with an Australian head of state.
It may well be that Prince Charles does not take over until he is well into his seventies. I can remember the amazing welcome and massive crowds in February, 1954 on the visit of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip to Melbourne. It is hard to believe that such a welcome will be given to an elderly couple in their seventies, in Melbourne in the 21st century !

I believe that it showed true facts of how Camilla lived her life as a close friend of Prince Charles. For those who want to believe that Princess Diana was a perfect person this is not the one to read. There is some items about Diana and how her behavior affected the family. Camilla was a person who Prince Charles has loved for years and became a best friend. Readers can have their own opinion, mine I believe Camilla is good for Charles and the Royal Family,

Yes, the author is biased and presents Camilla in a positive light, but I didn't feel at any point that she was lying or inventing details. She interviewed a lot of people who know Camilla, who spoke very well of her. It impressed me that no one who actually knows Camilla seems to dislike her. They all say she's lots of fun, is a good mother, she really loves Charles, and she's a loyal friend. The bad press Camilla has received is by people who really don't know her, and judged her based on what the late Princess Diana said about her. The author also wrote a book about Diana, so she knows that side of the story, too. In my opinion, Junor doesn't bash Diana in the book, but she didn't present her as a saint, either. There are clearly two sides to every story. I enjoyed reading the book and it gave me a lot more respect for the royal family, Charles in particular. Camilla has obviously made him happy, and it's nice to read a love story that ends well, especially when the people are over 60. They deserve to be happy.

I think people dislike Camilla because of Princess Dianna. I think though this book you will find that Camilla herself was hated because of her love of Prince Charles. The problem was she wasn’t a virgin which Charles was to marry, and his mother was the head of the Church of England.
It’s a tragic story of lovers that lived where you could not be divorced. After Diana died, Camilla and Charles began their friendship again and 50 years ago the tragic love story keeps going!
Queen Camilla will be very much like Prince Phillip. She will be the Calming force that King Charles needs by his side.

Engagingly written, a nice sympathetic bio of Camilla. It feels real and not like a public relations concoction, and kept my attention from beginning to end. Perfect summer book!

A sympathetic book about the woman who set her claws for the Prince of Wales and let nothing get in her way to fulfil her burning ambition to become Princess Consort, or whatever title she'll eventually own as the wife of King Charles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating insight into a woman once vilified in the press

I have always had sympathy for Camilla, involved in a situation so much bigger than most of us will ever experience. This book presents us with a thoroughly likeable, capable, intelligent woman who just happened to move in a particular sphere of society and got caught up in history.

I would question a lot that was written about Camilla. The book tries to make her a real saint and Diana was made to look bad.
However I feel if she had been out of the picture Diana & Charles' marriage might have stood a chance. Both Charles and Camilla have a lot to answer for one day and he should Never be king let alone Camilla Queenshe is no Saint

Really an interesting boom about the real profile of Camilla. I did not have a very good image about her and meanwhile I am reading the book, my impression is changing.
