From the bestselling author of What You Did comes a stunning psychological thriller. One party. Thirteen people. By 3.02 p.m., one of them will be dead.

The party should have been perfect: six couples from the same baby group, six newborns, a luxurious house. But not everything has gone to plan, and while some are here to celebrate, others have sorrows to drown. When someone falls from the balcony of the house, the secrets and conflicts within the group begin to spill out …

DS Alison Hegarty, herself struggling with infertility, is called in to investigate. She’s convinced the fall was not an accident, and finds the new parents have a lot to hide. Wealthy Ed and Monica show off their newborn while their teenage daughter is kept under virtual house arrest. Hazel and Cathy conceived their longed-for baby via an anonymous sperm donor—or so Hazel thinks. Anita and Jeremy planned to adopt from America, but there’s no sign of the child. Kelly, whose violent boyfriend disrupted previous group sessions, came to the party even though she lost her baby. And then there’s Jax, who’s been experiencing strange incidents for months—almost like someone’s out to get her. Is it just a difficult pregnancy? Or could it be payback for something she did in the past?

It’s a nightmare of a case, and as events get even darker it begins to look impossible. Only one thing is clear: they all have something to hide. And for one of them, it’s murder.

The Puzzle Clues Will Reveal the Killer
What is a detective to do when someone falls off/is pushed off a balcony, and nobody saw a thing? Well, the easy answer is to call it an accident, close the case, and move on. But something seems off to Alison, and this detective is determined to discover the truth.Six very different couples who met at a prenatal class facilitated by Nina, attend a barbeque hosted by one of the new mothers, Monica. They don't know each other well, but they are bonded by their shared experiences. What should have been a lovely get together is anything but a good time. Somehow, there are only four babies in attendance, almost no one is telling the truth, and oh yes, there is that little issue of a dead body. The story is told from multiple perspectives, starting ten weeks ago leading up to the barbeque, and Alison's investigation of the incident. The identity of the deceased is not immediately revealed, so I was trying to figure out who was missing from the interviews Alison held. Once I knew who died, then it was a guessing game to figure out which of them did it or if it was just a tragic accident.I didn't particularly like any of the characters. Not only do they have no qualms about lying to the police, but they easily lie to their partners. All I could think about was one of the endings to Clue, the movie, where all of them were guilty. Then I could picture Alison, who was trying to have a baby raising all four infants. No way these kids would grow up normal with this group of parents. But, I digress, there was no butler, so you can at least rest assured that he didn't do it. A fast-paced read that came together in a way that I didn't imagine. I enjoyed putting the clues together, though if this had been a jigsaw puzzle, mine would not have shown the killer's identity.I received a DRC from Amazon Publishing UK through NetGalley.

I have read all of Claire McGowan’s books so I was delighted to be given the opportunity to receive an ARC copy of her latest novel, “The Push.” It is an engrossing murder mystery set in London involving the 12 members of an ante-natal group drawn together from different backgrounds, their only commonality the fact that they were expecting a child. At a post-birth party hosted by one of the members, someone takes a fatal plunge from a glass balcony to a rockery below. Alison, the detective investigating the incident, believes instinctively that the death was not an accident but has a hard time proving it.

The motives and background of each of the different characters are revealed through flashbacks beginning with the first group meeting to the day of the incident itself and their lives shortly afterwards. Each character is struggling with issues, both emotional and financial, which could provide a motive for murder. It is not until mid-way through the book that the actual victim is revealed, adding to the sense of mystery.

This was a deftly written mystery, which will leave the reader guessing until the very end. The characters were well drawn and their personal drama keeps the reader invested in the story. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good murder mystery with well-developed characters.

This book was good nothing to crazy and I didn’t see the ending coming I liked Claire McGowans other book better What you did

This genre is my bread and butter and I've read this author before and liked her, thus why I opened this book.

DO NOT read this book if you are pregnant. Please heed this warning as it's not anywhere else.

The blatant attempts to shock the reader with the amount of loss-related gore is one contribution to my rating. The plot and goals could have been achieved without such additions, unless the goal truly was simply to try and shock the reader. I'm no stranger to some of the sadness and loss that can come from this sacred time - the author treats these things as side effects of pregnancy, rather than outliers, and the great lengths she goes to with detail seems more to check something off her "I included this in the book" list rather than adding any type of value to the novel.

I'll tread lightly around the "woke"ness of the novel. It was the "cheese" of my rating sandwich, and if it's the sort of thing that a) bothers you or, b) makes you roll your eyes with every chick-lit novelist in the thriller genre spicing in little bits of race and sexuality detail to show how absolutely progressive they are, you may not be able to find your eyes after this one. Suffice to say, this book may be a mystery, but every single opinion the author holds as it relates to controversial topics is on full, naked display. Why? One can't be sure, although her hand must be tired from how much she pat herself on the back.

The meat of my rating was how the author tried to string the reader along with what became known to the reader much, much sooner as obvious plotlines. Was anyone truly surprised by the time she got around to the "big reveal" of certain genealogy angles? No, no I didn't so.

If you can make it to the ending, you may be surprised, but the rest of the mystery is completely gone by then.

With 6 couples, plus the police detective and a few other characters, I worried whether I’d get confused, so I did jot down some notes as I went, but I had no trouble and was drawn in immediately. As the story unfolds, more and more is revealed about who it was that fell to their death at the party that brought together people who normally wouldn’t likely mix if not for having happened to have all attended the same prenatal classes. There are all kinds of secrets and reasons to be suspicious of so many of them. Some secrets become obvious early on, but there are also enough twists to not be completely sure. The pacing was excellent, never a dull stretch, always something that made me raise an eyebrow (and jot down a note) and wonder. It’s also a treat having the important ends neatly tied up in the end.

The narration was also excellent.

I enjoyed how everyone seemed to have something to hide. The characters were interesting, although some more than others. This is the second book I have read by this author, but it won't be the last.

I love the way Claire writes. I felt as if I were right there in the mix of everything going on. This was a really good read and I love the discussion questions at the end. My jaw was really on the floor when I learned who had been doing all those awful things to Jax and why but that was nothing compared to the ultimate reveal. I did not at all see that coming. I had gone in an entirely didn't direction as I tried to piece everything together. I will definitely be recommending this book to others and I'll be on the lookout for Claire's next release. Don't wait, grab a copy and start reading now!

At first I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this read. I was anxious to get to the meat of the story. I even returned the book and then got to missing the story so I downloaded it again to give it another try. It's an interesting group of characters. Is it the best mystery book? No, but it's got something to it and it had a few laughs to boot.

I couldn't put this down and kept guessing who did it right until the last pages. Very well portrayed characters, I could identify with many of them, despite them being completely different personalities. This book made me rethink how I act in social situations as well, so it was a good lesson learnt as well as entertainment. Thank you for a lovely read!

This novel is a great page-turner. It keeps the suspense until the resolution, the plot is engaging and keeps you hooked-up, and the majority of the characters are well-written and fleshed-out.
A very good option if you like domestic crime thrillers.

Loved it!! However, it is one of those books that has the potential to be confusing if you only dip in and out occasionally. I think it would be less complicated and confusing if it was read quickly. This is because it’s a novel that has A Lot of characters, and the story is told over different time frames leading up to “Today”. I made a note of each “mum” and who they were with, which helped. Each chapter focuses on a different new-mum-character and moment in time. During the telling of the story Time flits between: The Present (with The Investigating Officer,Alison); the day of the Fall (seen chapter by chapter from each character’s perspective) and a time scale that starts further back in the chapters concerning a “main” character Jax - but they all culminate in The present Day and the Reveal of who, what and why. There are a couple of twists but guessable - but doesn’t detract from enjoying it. It was well written and keeps you gripped but for me it wasn’t a SuperWow 5* read. Def a solid 4*. Will read more by this author and can totally recommend it.

I read the "Paula Maguire" series with pleasure and find it is hard to believe this book was written by the same author. Not lacking thrill, but cheaply written, one-dimensional. Not worth the time spent on it, neither the readers nor the authors.
