Edgar Award Finalist

A struggling silhouette artist in Victorian Bath seeks out a renowned child spirit medium in order to speak to the dead - and to try and identify their killers - in this beguiling new tale from the queen of Gothic fiction, Laura Purcell

As the age of the photograph dawns in Victorian Bath, silhouette artist Agnes is struggling to keep her business afloat. Still recovering from a serious illness herself, making enough money to support her elderly mother and her orphaned nephew Cedric has never been easy, but then one of her clients is murdered shortly after sitting for Agnes, and then another, and another... Why is the killer seemingly targeting her business?

Desperately seeking an answer, Agnes approaches Pearl, a child spirit medium lodging in Bath with her older half-sister and her ailing father, hoping that if Pearl can make contact with those who died, they might reveal who killed them. But Agnes and Pearl quickly discover that instead they may have opened the door to something that they can never put back.

Edgard Award Finalist - Best Paperback Novel

"Fans of gothic fiction will devour this."
—Publishers Weekly

"Purcell is fast establishing herself as the doyenne of gothic mystery, and this positively oozes uncanny menace . Niftily plotted and deftly researched, it's one to read with the lights blazing and the door bolted." ― Mail on Sunday (London)

"A clever and well-researched novel with a good twist, and it shows the nightmare of life for single women of limited means in the 19th century." ― Literary Review (London)

"Dripping with atmosphere with a corkscrew plot, Laura Purcell just gets better and better." -- Stacey Halls, author of The Familiars and The Foundling

"It's her best one yet and that's saying something. A story of a woman haunted in every way possible, I think it's a future gothic classic." -- Martyn Waites

"There are ghosts, ghouls and ghastly goings on aplenty in the tale of Agnes Darken . There are some spine-chilling moments in this twisty tale, and fans of murder mystery and gothic fiction will love getting lost in Agnes and Pearl's spooky world."
― Daily Mirror (London)

"Darkly addictive and utterly compelling. Reading Laura's books is like watching a horror movie where you have to keep hiding behind a cushion because you dread what is coming next, but you simply have to find out!" -- Ruth Hogan

"Every bit as brilliant as I knew it would be. The writing has all the gothic creepiness that only Laura can summon, with characters as darkly ambiguous as the silhouettes themselves. It truly kept me guessing to the very last page." -- Sonia Velton

"Beautifully eerie . Laura Purcell's brilliance is in showing you a place and a time you think is familiar, and making every atom of it uncanny - and in The Shape of Darkness, she does it better than ever." -- Natasha Pulley

"The latest spooky page-turner from Laura Purcell ... Not one to read alone at night, Purcell weaves an eerie web of complex family relationships that she slowly unwinds as her characters attempt to separate illusion from reality ... Genuinely spine-tingling."
― Herald (London)

“Contacting the Other Side isn’t a pleasure cruise. If you want to talk to the dead, you have to go digging amongst the worms and maggots.”

For her sixth novel (four of which are gothic in style and two of which are historical novels), British author Laura Purcell whisks readers back to Victorian Bath in England for THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS (2021) where mystery and death lingers in the shadows at a time when photography is just beginning to be popularized. Agnes Darken, living with her ailing mother and nephew, keeps the family afloat with her business as a silhouette artist. Having recovered from a harrowing accident and subsequent long illness, at a loss to explain what may have happened to the man she loves who has gone missing possibly at sea, Agnes also deals with growing cataracts. Worse, however, her income as well as her own mental wellness is beginning to be put at risk when some of her recent customers who have sat for her to have their silhouettes reproduced from cut paper with additional artistic touches applied are found murdered shortly after they have sat for her.

In another household in Bath lives two sisters and their bedridden, father with an infected, decaying jaw. Myrtle Boyle has given up performing séances for strangers and money since “the spirits have… whispered… that her real power lies in manipulating auras and controlling the universal force” of mesmerism. She is “a grasping, mercenary thing, full of affectation,” but is convinced her eleven-year-old, albino sister, Pearl, is the one who “possesses the Gift of Mediumship: she’s the Genuine Article.” Myrtle dubs her sister, “The White Sylph.” Given the murders surrounding her customers, the suspicion which is cast upon her indirectly affecting her business, and the inability of the police to find any possible suspects, it is only a matter of time before the lives of Agnes, Pearl, and Myrtle begin to intertwine.

Purcell does an excellent job creating atmosphere and building suspense. The dialogue is believable. The séances Pearl performs for Agnes are genuinely creepy and appear to be legitimate although they provide no authoritative answers. The attempts to contact the dead for information drain Pearl who is also looking for someone who has died. With the introduction of lesser male characters, Purcell effectively inserts in a subtle, but telling fashion a female’s perspective on how women of the time were treated.

As the story moves forward, apprehension builds with what appear to be supernatural events and/or beings becoming more evident and dangerous. There are more deaths. A long-time friend of Agnes’s, a doctor, begins to play a greater and more supportive role. Pearl is more and more plagued with concerns about her “gift” while Agnes is feeling greater frustration and fear as something, possibly diabolical, appears to be closing in on her. Throughout, however, for the sensitive (no pun intended) reader, there lingers a suspicion that all is not well; that secrets are being held from both the readers and the characters.

THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS richly brings the period alive touching upon details revolving around police work, the impact of societal impressions upon others, medical treatments for those ailing or terminally ill, the lifestyles of ordinary people, as well as the popular belief in mediums and contacting the dead. The author also delves into loneliness and regret and guilt and how they can deeply shape an individual.

Purcell is deftly in control of her narrative and the aenigmas surrounding her two central characters. When the author does choose revelations to be unveiled, they generally are beyond what most readers will anticipate and there is always another twist which soon develops. The many explosive disclosures toward the end, the climax of the story which reveals so many answers to questions which haunt the pages of THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS, and the book’s conclusion are gasp-worthy. Altogether, THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS is a most worthy and entertaining read. [Note: The author generously provides readers with some of her fascinating sources and inspirations for THE SHAPE OF DARKNESS in Acknowledgements at the end of the book.]

Having read and enjoyed "Bone China," I was anxious to read another of Laura Prcell's books. I really enjoyed this book right up until the end...

Let me start by saying that Purcell's prose is so vivid and lyrical that she makes it easy to picture everything that she describes. She also broaches some eerie Victorian realities in a way that makes me leave the book to learn more about them.

*Spoiler alert* I'm just so confused by how abruptly this story ends. Was Agnes schizophrenic? Did she allow Constance to posses her via the seances so that Constance ruined her life - again? Despite my confusion at the end, I found the book really interesting and well-written.

At the end of this book, I was left saying, "Really?" Nothing in the rest of the book made sense after reading the end. But I did enjoy reading the beginning and middle of the book so I gave it 3 stars.

Loved the setting in this novel. Similar atmosphere and plot twists as her other gothic novels. This one's ending was a little confusing to me, but I enjoyed the characters and it was a good read.

This was an interesting mystery done in a very low key way. There are hints of supernatural elements but the whole book I was wondering what is or is not happening? Is it supernatural, is it mental, is it something else? I think the author did well in keeping you guessing, even at the very end I am still not 100% sure what happened. The is the first time a quick read has me still thinking about it and whether or not I should re-read in case I missed something. The books seems a little slow at first but the building of the story and piecing everything together was well done. I enjoyed this book and feel it would be a good quick read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My fourth Purcell book and this does not disappoint
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2021
The shape of darkness is a tale of loss, love, spirits, obsession, revenge and of course the common theme in Purcells work tragedy. The beginning of this book is classic Purcell shrouded in mystery but very subtle hints are left for the reader that later on conclude the story. I’ve noticed this a lot in her work. It’s truly the smallest details you need to look out for. I found this tale so atmospheric and just oozing gothic. I found the imagery so vivid and intense. Not only were scenes were set perfectly but correct terminology was used and this really did create such a powerful element.

A shapes of darkness echoes her previous works but that being said this book does stand out on its own and is nothing but incredible. From the first page I was drawn into the mystery and captivated by the characters. Straight away her scenes breathed life and her characters came to life off the page. I could really feel the emotions with such immensity throughout. Like her characters pasts this book will haunt me for a while.

The plot like scissors took many turns but was executed perfectly. I’ve noticed a lot in her novels that the events are always explained in a final conclusion but at the same time there are always some happenings in her story’s that can’t be explained. This creates a bigger shroud of mystery in her books and though it may annoy some I think it is what makes her work so powerful. You’re never really sure what her intent was. This story took many twists and dark turns. Although I did predict parts of the story this did not take away my enjoyment. I really thought I knew where this plot was headed... but at the end it just spiralled! There was still so much suspense and wow that ending... I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I enjoyed this book immensely and loved how multiple story’s compressed into one.

With her books I’ve always had to take a step back to process what I’ve read (because of the cruelty and her dark characters) but never before has one of her books made me cry... with her work I always desperately hope for characters happy endings but they never prevail... this was dark and I don’t want to give it away because it’s massive part to the story which the reader should discover themselves. She truly is a master at birthing such real and raw characters that stand out. Purcell’s characters always stand out from the crowd and are very unique but at the same time created from the darker parts of humanity. Very rarely do we see a middle aged women with health problems. Too often do we see characters who are drawn from society’s idea of beauty/ perfection and who are wrote to be aesthetically pleasing and perfect.
Purcell is the queen of Morden gothic and she has yet to disappoint me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page turner but a disappointing ending...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2021
There's no need for me to mention the full plot, as others have done that already.
There is no denying that this book is a page turner, and as always the characters and the setting of the story come to vivid life in the mind, nearly to the extent of seeing, hearing and smelling the scenes being read about.

The problem for me is the ending. I'm not one of those people that want a particular ending and throw my toys out of the pram when it doesn't go that way. However, this book has an ending that suggests that the author had many ideas of where it could end, couldn't decide, so went with all of them. What that leaves is a rather unsatisfying groan-worthy mess. You have to read it to understand what I mean, as I won't give away spoilers. And this book is still worth a read.
The other problem is that I sniffed out all the rats a while before the messy twisty endings sorted them all out. I thought at the time, surely she(the author) won't give that as the answer, but she did...cue groan. And will she twist that bit as well? Yes...groan. Perhaps she won't twist that bit? Oh she has...groan.

Don't get me wrong, this book is intricate and clever, but the ending is like it's almost trying to be too clever and that takes something away from the impact of it. It's like tying up loose ends, then knotting them again and again, and repeating it till there's nothing left to knot. Some of the ideas for plot twists could have been saved for another book.

So it was a good, fast page-turning read, but the ending was a bit of a belly flop.
I'll still read future books by the author. The journey is always good, even if the destination isn't as satisfying.
