I'm not a horse person, so I'm a bit baffled by why someone would spend so much time, energy and money to take care of a horse (or, in the case of my sister, four of them). But, I do enjoy building things, so when the need for a hay steamer presented itself, I was glad to jump in. If you're interested in building one feel free to add a comment and I'll be happy to share my experiences.
But regardless of how it is used, the fact remains that this is a great product. It heats up quickly, runs for more than an hour continuously on a full tank, and is easy to maintain (basically just make sure to dump out the leftover water, and descale it every so often).
I always appreciate a product that is well-designed but still affordable. Highly recommend for steaming both your wall paper and hay.
First off, I was not, in any way, disappointed with my small investment.
I built a plywood box about five feet long and four equal sides about ten inches square. On a whim, and before assembling the sides, I covered the interior sides with tin foil.
Once the tube was assembled, I added a permanent back. The front cover is hinged, merely rests on the box and relies on a gravity seal, so it’s easy to open or close and pressure cannot build up in the box.
I drilled a hole, about six inches back from the permanently sealed end, just large enough to press fit the steamer hose into it.
One tripod leg on the front and one on the back hold the unit at a comfortable working height. The back one holds the box about an inch lower than the loading end, for moisture drainage. A quarter inch hole at the low spot, allows moisture to drain
A simple rack, on which the wood being steamed rests, allows steam to circulate around it.
A small hole, near the front, just big enough to press a probe type cooking thermometer in allows me to monitor temperature in the box (the hole is situated so the probe will not hit wood being steamed).
With everything up and running, the steamer does a great job of steaming wood. The thermometer indicates the steamer holds the box at about two hundred twenty degrees. Too, I have no problem getting an hour of run time per fill.
To summarize, if you’re looking for a steam source for small wood bending projects, this unit will meet your needs.
NOTES:
1) The steamer worked so well for wood bending, I plan on giving the original box to a friend and building a new on using metal flashing for the interior, rather than the more fragile foil. Alternatively, a box could be built big enough to hold a six or eight inch stove pipe.
Using flashing limits how much steam hits the wood of the box. Of course, the wood box insulates the flashing, helping reduce how quickly the steam cools.
2) One fellow purchased a roll of cooking bag material and cut them long enough to hold boards he was installing on a boat he was building. He applied steam to these to bend boards in place on the boat.
I took one star off, because the first one I purchased only lasted about 8 months. I'm guessing it's because we have hard water (the manual says to use tap water, but if you have hard water you may want to use distilled). After trying some other methods involving spraying & scraping, I gave up & bought another steamer. Those methods were way too time intensive & took a lot more physical effort (scraping, rubbing, spraying). That wouldn't be a big deal for a small space, but we just have rooms & rooms of the stuff. Even the cost of two steamers is worth the investment for us. Now I only used distilled water in it.
To be clear -- it WON'T save a whole lot of time. You're still going to hate removing wallpaper. It's not the kind of job that, once you start it, you feel an inner drive to complete. It won't make the removal experience feel like an animated Disney musical where everything is magical and carefree.
This wallpaper steamer WILL remove much of the "hard labor" involved with your project. I've used this to remove paper from drywall and plaster, and it works well in both cases. It only has a hard time with paper that's been glued to spackle. Even then, the job is fairly friendly to the lazy man or woman who needs to get this kind of project finished.
If you put together this machine, a plaster knife, some tap water, and a few hours, you'll have all the paper down with very little "real" work. It's so simple that it doesn't even have an on / off switch; just fill it up, plug it in, and wait for your steam. It's well-built and worth your money.
