Roy Grace is the detective who has to find Michael but what he doesn’t know is that the prank has led to more questions from Michael’s friends, leaving the reader to wonder if any of Michael’s friends are trustworthy. All this seems to make it even harder for Grace to figure out what happened to Michael.
There are several things that make this book even more dynamic. Peter James writes from different points of view in the book, that being the criminals, the victim, and the police. By doing this, James fills the book with even more suspense since the characters drive the story, making me wonder what was going to happen next.
Another great point of creating multiple points of view made the characters even more memorable because the characters are more developed. People might argue that the point of view switches too much but in this book, it’s still easy to follow since Dead Simple is more of a thriller than along with being a mystery. I have read books in multiple viewpoints. Some were done well. Others weren’t. In Dead Simple, it was a great part of the story.
Some people on Kindle may feel differently about this, as well as Grace’s involvement with a Medium. That made the book better for me since I’m a big fan of the TV series, Medium, and other TV shows of that nature.
I have to say that this was one of the best books I have read this year based on the unique type of plot and the multiple viewpoints, which in this case gave the story a tremendous amount of suspense. I wish I can give this book more than five stars.
Before we are introduced to the protagonist, we first meet a motley collection of individuals apparently celebrating the stag night of one of their friends, Michael, by visiting a string of pubs. An odd start to a crime novel, perhaps, but then matters take a turn for the unusual. As a prank on groom to be Michael, someone who has a reputation for playing exaggerated jokes on his mates, and not a little in the vein of vengeance, the group arrive in the midst of a forest where they proceed to inter the drunken Michael in a coffin and then bury it. Events quickly evolve tragically, leaving Michael buried alive and no one apparently knowing where. So here we have a police drama where the cops are trying to locate the groom before he expires from lack of air.
Enter Roy Grace, a seasoned cop with baggage of his own. Several years before, his own wife went missing and he turned over every stone to locate her without success, including using several psychics to try to find her. Author James doesn’t leave us with this relatively simple mystery though. A couple of neat twists throw new light onto what is really happening, and so, the chase to prevent Michael’s murder is on.
I did enjoy this police procedural novel with its plethora of detail, too much at times, that anchored it firmly in the present day, whilst introducing almost comic contrasts through Grace’s reliance on his psychic friends. I will definitely be reading more of the fifteen Roy Grace novels in the future.
I’ve actually read this series before, well a little over 1/2 of it, so I’m reading it from the start again as there’s about 8 I haven’t read & wanted a refresher course on Peter James & also on Roy Grace.
I couldn’t recall the book, so it really felt like a first time read, & a very enjoyable one at that. I slipped right into the spell of the storyline & found it very hard to put down, maybe especially as the plots time driven, it seems to push an air of urgency onto the reader, just as it does on the actual characters.
I really enjoyed this & read it in a little over a day. There were no typos or any other mistakes I noticed, & I’m usually very good at picking them out.
I highly recommend the book & also DO start at book one, if you’ve been eyeing up later books in the series, you’d only be doing a disservice to yourself, the author & the book itself if you don’t keep the backstories straight, I generally always think that, but with this book, & Graces missing wife, it’s even more important.
Happy Reading!
