Suspense-filled, British police procedural that holds great promise for an outstanding series.
If you are looking for a British Police Procedural series with an engaging protagonist, then look no further.  Roy Grace is one of those coppers that you just can't help but like. The East Sussex setting, during the last week of May, brought the narrative into sharp focus. The characterization was exemplary and the police case interesting and suspenseful. Containing several plot twists, this novel will keep even the most ardent thriller reader happy."Dead Simple" is a novel that expounds on the lengths some people will go to further their jealousy and greed.  It is the first in a series that I plan to pursue with enjoyment. As of now, there are 14 titles in the DS Roy Grace series. It would look as though I have some serious catching up to do! I hope that somewhere in the next thirteen novels I will discover just what happened to Roy Grace's wife Sandy and that we see him getting on with his life.A great and suspense-filled read which makes an excellent start to a series. 4.5 stars rounded up

What starts out as a revenge prank suddenly turns into a thriller. That is the basis of Peter James’ first book in the series of Roy Grace, Dead Simple. The prank in this case is four friends of Michael Harrison locking him in a coffin during a drunken spree, which leads to the four friends being killed while Michael is in a coffin, days away from an uncertain death.
Roy Grace is the detective who has to find Michael but what he doesn’t know is that the prank has led to more questions from Michael’s friends, leaving the reader to wonder if any of Michael’s friends are trustworthy. All this seems to make it even harder for Grace to figure out what happened to Michael.
There are several things that make this book even more dynamic. Peter James writes from different points of view in the book, that being the criminals, the victim, and the police. By doing this, James fills the book with even more suspense since the characters drive the story, making me wonder what was going to happen next.
Another great point of creating multiple points of view made the characters even more memorable because the characters are more developed. People might argue that the point of view switches too much but in this book, it’s still easy to follow since Dead Simple is more of a thriller than along with being a mystery. I have read books in multiple viewpoints. Some were done well. Others weren’t. In Dead Simple, it was a great part of the story.
Some people on Kindle may feel differently about this, as well as Grace’s involvement with a Medium. That made the book better for me since I’m a big fan of the TV series, Medium, and other TV shows of that nature.
I have to say that this was one of the best books I have read this year based on the unique type of plot and the multiple viewpoints, which in this case gave the story a tremendous amount of suspense. I wish I can give this book more than five stars.

I have read literally hundreds of crime thrillers set in many parts of the world, yet, somehow, thus far have missed the UK’s number one crime thriller author, Peter James, off my list. To remedy that, I recently finished the first book in his Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series, ‘Dead Simple’. Set in and around Brighton, a seaside city almost fifty miles south of London, today it is a far cry from the role it played in Jane Austen’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and, perhaps, more akin to the literary legacy left in ‘Brighton Rock’ by Graham Greene.

Before we are introduced to the protagonist, we first meet a motley collection of individuals apparently celebrating the stag night of one of their friends, Michael, by visiting a string of pubs. An odd start to a crime novel, perhaps, but then matters take a turn for the unusual. As a prank on groom to be Michael, someone who has a reputation for playing exaggerated jokes on his mates, and not a little in the vein of vengeance, the group arrive in the midst of a forest where they proceed to inter the drunken Michael in a coffin and then bury it. Events quickly evolve tragically, leaving Michael buried alive and no one apparently knowing where. So here we have a police drama where the cops are trying to locate the groom before he expires from lack of air.

Enter Roy Grace, a seasoned cop with baggage of his own. Several years before, his own wife went missing and he turned over every stone to locate her without success, including using several psychics to try to find her. Author James doesn’t leave us with this relatively simple mystery though. A couple of neat twists throw new light onto what is really happening, and so, the chase to prevent Michael’s murder is on.

I did enjoy this police procedural novel with its plethora of detail, too much at times, that anchored it firmly in the present day, whilst introducing almost comic contrasts through Grace’s reliance on his psychic friends. I will definitely be reading more of the fifteen Roy Grace novels in the future.

You’d Never Know…. That this is the first book in a series, it feels way too functional character wise, & that’s certainly not a bad thing, except for the authors questionable remarks regarding a certain characters chest. Not that I’m a prude, far far from it, but I do like anything like that to add to the storyline, not just bring there for the pure sake of it.

I’ve actually read this series before, well a little over 1/2 of it, so I’m reading it from the start again as there’s about 8 I haven’t read & wanted a refresher course on Peter James & also on Roy Grace.

I couldn’t recall the book, so it really felt like a first time read, & a very enjoyable one at that. I slipped right into the spell of the storyline & found it very hard to put down, maybe especially as the plots time driven, it seems to push an air of urgency onto the reader, just as it does on the actual characters.

I really enjoyed this & read it in a little over a day. There were no typos or any other mistakes I noticed, & I’m usually very good at picking them out.

I highly recommend the book & also DO start at book one, if you’ve been eyeing up later books in the series, you’d only be doing a disservice to yourself, the author & the book itself if you don’t keep the backstories straight, I generally always think that, but with this book, & Graces missing wife, it’s even more important.

Happy Reading!

Very well written, such a cool story. I thought the characters were interesting and easy to imagine. Certainly hope he is still writing new books in this series, just started the second one and it’s also great so far.
