It loads apps much faster than my Xbox or PlayStation (or even the Roku) and, my favorite part, it works with my Echo Dot and Fire Tablet, as well. I can tell Alexa to pause, play, stop, rewind or fast forward things like Plex, YouTube, Netflix, and Prime. There's a few seconds lag, of course (i.e., I say "Alexa, pause fireTV", and the TV keeps playing for about 4 seconds before the command works), which is annoying, but it's still a very cool feature. I can also use Alexa to adjust the volume. Aside from my Dot and tablet, you can control it with the microphone button on the televisions remote control, too, obviously, which requires you to be holding the remote (you have to keep your finger on the button while you say the command) but it completely removes the lag problem. The remote's microphone also has the bonus of being capable of controlling the rest of my Alexa enabled devices (such as turning my lights off and on and using my smart plugs). This is especially handy when I'm lying in bed, for instance, and I want to tell Alexa to do something without raising my voice loud enough for the Dot to hear me. With the remote, I can just press the button and whisper in my commands. And apparently you don't even need to have to remote pointing directly at the television in order to have it work, like you would with a normal television remote. I've had the remote with me when I've walked onto my porch, for instance, and paused Netflix from there.
My only gripes have been that the television doesn't seem to have an option which allows you to turn off the sleep mode. After about 25 minutes of inactivity (or lower), the set just goes black. To tackle this problem, I had to download Aptoid. And, from that app, I had to download another app called "Stay Alive!" This did the trick of keeping the television from ever going back into sleep mode on its own. However, it still feels like this should have been an option that was built into the TV. It seems a bit ridiculous that I had to hunt down a different way of handling this on my own (utilizing even more of the TV's hard drive space, which there's only 4.27 GB's of). If I were wanting to play games on the television (which is an option), this lack of hard drive space would undoubtedly become an issue, probably requiring some form of external space to be purchased and hooked up. With just my streaming apps alone, I currently find myself with only 752 MB of space left to play with, out of that 4.27 GB. Also, when I tried hooking up my off-brand wired X-Box One controller to the TV, it wouldn't work. A wireless Bluetooth controller will, though. As will my Bluetooth speakers and headphones, which is handy.
I signed up for Netflix 4K and tried to stream Amazon Movies in 4K but couldn't see any difference (still not sure if the jump from 1080p to 4K is supposed to be easily noticeable). Nor could I find any menu setting to turn it on. It wasn't a real issue to me as the picture quality was still very good.
Then came an issue. I get that this is a smart TV and that promoting FireTV is the main thing, but I don't understand why every time the TV was turned on you had to manually select Input1/HDMI. My mother is not tech savvy and is still learning all of this stuff. She's not comfortable giving Alexa instructions on the remote, and gets flustered with too many button presses. She just needed to have the TV turn on and already be on HDMI 1 for the cablebox, but instead was always on main menu. Because of that we traded TVs and I used it just fine despite that.
The TV was purchased in April of 2019. 4 Days ago I left the TV on while watching the news, and woke up to 95% of the screen dimmed out to near black while slowly blinking in and out. Essentially the TV is useless and we didn't buy an extended warranty. I don't know what happened, or if it's even worth trying to fix (or even where to take it to).
The fact that the first input couldn't be set as the default when turning on would have been enough for me to knock the rating down by at least one star. The fact that after only 1 year it's essentially dead knocks it down to one star.
