Fabulously broad, bright, immersive and non-fatiguing view.
Sharp, detailed & contrasty with excellent chroma control over a very broad sweet spot .
Solid build , excellent focuser, good eye relief and compact form make it a pleasure to use .
Downsides-The very ambitious design combining super wide FOV and short focal length bumps against physics with field curvature related issues at the far edge of field -however, in actual use, those issues don't detract as one rarely uses the extreme edge for detail study-
I consider these Kowas a super value and can highly recommend them.
It feels really good in the hand. Maybe a touch small if you have big hands. The focusing wheel is made of metal, and is nicely knurled. There is next to no play in it. The body has a nice coating that feels good, but maybe a touch thin. The eyecups have very solid positions and don't collapse easily if you have them extended.
These binoculars have a nice, bright view. There's some edge falloff, but that's to be expected. The image is pretty sharp. I find them easy to focus and fine tune.
There's a common complaint about the strap eyelets being mounted in the wrong place. I'd agree. While it's not too bothersome, the binoculars will not lay flat on your chest.
I like that I can just put them up to my eyes without having to constantly re-adjust like I have had to do with other binoculars.
Overall, I like them a lot.
Quality build, but as others note, the neck strap grommets are in the wrong place, making the top (eyepiece end) of these binoculars fall forward on your chest while wearing. It’s super annoying.
There is much less focusing, in general, than a high powered binocular (depth of field adjustment) and as such, this is a wonderful binocular to share with someone seated near you. Can pass the binocular to them and they easily place up to eyes and rarely need to focus, even if your eyes are reasonably different. Awesome for children in this regard.
I like the build quality and the case. Enjoy the huge focusing wheel, and the compact size. I own other binoculars (mostly Zeiss) but these Kowas are my grab-n-go pair, and as such get lots of use. Of all my binoculars of various magnifications and qualities, these are the ones that I would replace immediately should I ever lose them. That says a lot.
Super wide field of view but the very edges aren't quite super sharp, much like a wide angle camera lens.
That slight edge distortion is the only thing keeping these from being giant killers, you can get that edge to edge sharpness, but you'll pay 4-5x as much for it. I have a pair of Mavens, now admittedly they are 8x42 vs 6.5x32 but these Kowa binoculars blow the Mavens out of the water in not only optics but build quality at less than half the price.
These are not inexpensive, but they are worth the money.
I've had top of the line Swarovskis and Nikons in the past and I'm very pleased with the 6.5x32 Kowa BDII. They are really really close to the "alpha" binoculars in performance and quality without the "alpha" price. In fact they outperform my original Swarovski 8x30 SLC's by a wide margin...much sharper. Great birding glass with a 5mm exit pupil so they work well in low light too. Plus they close focus to under 4 feet. A bargain at $350. The only downside is the soft case is slightly too small...hard to use.
