About the Author

Monty Don has been gardening on TV for over 25 years for ITV, Channel 4 and the BBC, and since 2003 has been the lead presenter on BBC TV's Gardeners' World, which from 2011 has been filmed in his own garden in Herefordshire, Longmeadow. He is an experienced organic gardener and was President of the Soil Association from 2008 to 2017. A prolific journalist and author, he was gardening correspondent for the Observer from 1994 to 2006 and has written a weekly hardening column for the Daily Mail since 2004. He has published 18 books, including his recent Sunday Times bestseller Nigel: My Family and Other Dogs.

The Complete Gardener by Monty Don is the one of the most comprehensive gardening books that I have ever read. The introduction includes information on the evolution of the garden as well as on wildlife and weather. It then tackles structure including such items as design planning, water features and paths. A section on gardening basics will be extremely useful to novice gardeners and great refresher for more experienced gardeners.

After these chapters, the author concentrates on the gardens he’s developed at Longmeadow in Herefordshire, England near Leominster. The chapters give a history of how each garden has evolved over the years as well as the types of plants in them. Next up are chapters on the various types of plants with specific varieties used at Longmeadow. This is followed by chapters on growing vegetables, herbs, and fruit.

While the soil, weather, and temperatures are very different where I live, there is still a lot of information that is applicable. While items such as when to sow certain seeds or plant something needs to be adjusted for my climate, the task itself is the same. Monty also shares insights into life and how gardening is a positive influence on him.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and educational read. I will be using this as a reference book regularly. I’m looking forward to reading more of his books on gardens and gardening.

I love Gardener's World and Monty Don. This book is a wealth of info. The only downside is I would have preferred the pages, especially with photos to be of higher quality/some gloss. The pages feel no different than regular printer paper which can easily pick up dirt and stains...but it's a fair considering it's a more affordable price

An outstanding book on gardening by one of the best known gardeners in Britain. Monte takes you thru his own garden, which is massive and divided into several smaller gardens (which are in fact very large in themselves). Each of these have a theme that sets them apart distinctly from the rest.

Each chapter then describes a theme garden, with Monte explaining how it came to be, from conception to initial work to established results. Many of the gardens have evolved over the thirty plus years he's owned the property. The chapters are lavishly illustrated with photos.

The man is a wealth of knowledge on the various plants, but also on ponds, stone walkways, weather patterns, and much else. And it's the best kind of knowledge for a book like this -- practical, experiential knowledge based on (probably) four decades of hands-on work.

He humbly explains when he made mistakes, how he corrected them, and how the solution worked out. This makes the book so refreshing and casts Monte in a very humble, unpretentious light. You can't help but like the man. Highly recommend.
