IACP AWARD WINNER • JAMES BEARD AWARD NOMINEE

From the foremost figure on the New Orleans’ drinking scene and the owner of renowned bar Cure—winner of the James Beard Award for Best Bar Program—a cocktail book that celebrates the vibrant city.

“A definitive guidebook to the city’s towering landmarks, both vintage and new. If you can’t make it to New Orleans, buy this book—it’s the next best thing.”—Wayne Curtis, author of And a Bottle of Rum

New Orleans is known for its spirit(s)–driven festivities. Neal Bodenheimer and coauthor Emily Timberlake tell the city’s story through 100 cocktails, each chosen to represent New Orleans’ past, present, and future.

A love letter to the city and the cast of characters that have had a hand in making it so singular,
Cure: New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ’Em features interviews with local figures such as Ian Neville, musician and New Orleans funk royalty, plus a few tips on how to survive your first Mardi Gras. Along the way, the reader is taken on a journey that highlights the rich history and complexity of the city and the drinks it inspired, as well as the techniques and practices that Cure has perfected in their mission to build forward rather than just looking back. Of course, this includes the classics every self-respecting drinker should know, especially if you’re a New Orleanian: the Sazerac, Julep, Vieux Carré, Ramos Gin Fizz, Cocktail à la Louisiane, and French 75. Famous local chefs have contributed easy recipes for snacks with local flavor, perfect for pairing with these libations.

Cure: New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ’Em is a beautiful keepsake for anyone who has fallen under New Orleans’s spell and a must-have souvenir for the millions of people who visit the city each year.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“This book is a loving, and lovely, tribute to New Orleans’s rich, heady, and utterly beguiling drinking culture, and the posse of bartenders whose recipes Neal Bodenheimer and Emily Timberlake have managed to pack into these lively pages might be the finest ever assembled. The only problem with this book is that even a few minutes with it and I can only think about downing tools and hightailing it to New Orleans.”

David Wondrich, editor in chief of the Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails

“New Orleans has always been synonymous with good times and good drinking, but it wasn’t until Cure that craft cocktails really found their home in the Big Easy. This beautiful book by the incredible duo of Bodenheimer and Timberlake gives us not only the delicious cocktails that put Cure on the map, but also an homage to the diverse drinking culture of New Orleans. This tribute to a great city and a phenomenal bar is a must for any lover of drinks, travel, or simply fine things.”

Ivy Mix, owner of Leyenda and author of Spirits of Latin America

“New York is known for its skyscrapers and San Francisco for its fairy-tale fogs. And New Orleans? It’s famous for its drinks. Thanks to Bodenheimer and Timberlake, we now have a definitive guidebook to the city’s towering landmarks, both vintage and new. If you can’t make it to New Orleans, buy this book—it’s the next best thing.”

Wayne Curtis, author of And a Bottle of Rum

Fabulous book on New Orleans, cocktails, bar snacks, and more.
5 Stars
Fabulous book on New Orleans, cocktails, bar snacks, and more.
I’m planning a Ladies Christmas Luncheon this year and am currently in the process of planning the food so I’ve been going through a lot of recipes. As far as potables, I find that having a house cocktail makes serving drinks so much easier. When men are involved, I tend to set up a makeshift bar on my bamboo bar cart and let them deal with making their own. Ladies, I find, enjoy not having to make that decision, instead being served something tasty and festive. If you like the idea of having a house or signature cocktail in your home, I can recommend a book that will give you a plethora of ideas. Cure, New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix ‘Em is a recent release from Abrams Books, and it is a beauty! Whether you enjoy a good cocktail or not, let me tell you it is a ton of fun to page through. You know that you’re in for something special when you see the end pages are a map of New Orleans. How handy these would have been during my last visit, but I digress. In addition to giving you a fascinating history of New Orleans drink culture, it also familiarizes you with a lot of liqueurs with which you are doubtless unfamiliar. I found that information as interesting as the recipes for the cocktails themselves. You will find many familiar cocktails in this book, beautifully photographed, and also many new ones that you will certainly be eager to try. Frankly, this is the best book on cocktails that I have ever seen.If you’re unfamiliar with the fascinating names that some of the more obscure cocktails tend to have, you will enjoy discovering them here as well as learning their history. Think Berlin in the 70s, Gunshot Fizz, Dark Passenger, Two Way Mirror, you get the idea.As valuable as are the cocktail recipes, so are the those for syrups used in making the cocktails. The Two Way Mirror cocktail, for example, uses sage syrup. As someone who grows sage every year (this year I potted it up and brought it indoors to see how it would fare the conservatory) I am eager to give this a try. You will also find recipes to make your own black pepper syrup, cinnamon syrup, Orgeat (I have never been able to find that in my area so I’m excited about it), as well as grenadine. As if all of this isn’t enough, there is also a chapter on Bar Snacks. I will be diving right into this section, I can tell you. The Mussels in Absinthe sound intriguing as do the Blue Crab Beignets. There’s also a recipe for one of my favorite foods, pimiento cheese, paired with bread and butter pickles and pepper jelly.Anyone interested in the drink culture of New Orleans, in creating fabulous cocktails and bar snacks, or in increasing their knowledge about same should not be without this wonderful new book. It would make a fabulous Christmas present.Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Abrams Books as a member of Abrams Dinner Party.

Great book full of different recipes for Nola cocktails. Several little stories with the history of the cocktails around Nola, great gift for that cocktail enthusiast.

This is the only bartending book you will ever need — but aside from the actual cocktail recipes, the writing is outstanding!

My daughter and I were recently in New Orleans and visited several of the cocktail bars associated with Cure. They had some of the best cocktails I've ever had (and I own 2 bars with VERY talented mixologists) I was thrilled to find out they'd published a cocktail book. Even more thrilling is the fact that the recipes for our favorite drinks were included in the book. Because we live on the west coast, some of the ingredients are a bit difficult to come by, but where there's a will, there's a way! Not only am I making frequent use of this book, but I bought several for gifts.

This book has so many different recipes to choose from, it's an excellent addition to any bar cart or new homeowner that plans on hosting parties.

When we received a copy of ‘Cure’, the new release from Neal Bodenheimer and Emily Timberlake, we jumped at the chance to create one of the cocktail recipes. The book not only serves as a love letter to New Orleans, but contains over 75 recipes - covering both classics, such as the Sazerac, as well as original creations from the namesake bar from the book’s title. Scattered throughout the pages are essays, interviews with important local figures and tips for elevating your home mixology game. There’s even a chapter devoted to bar snacks - for when you need a little nosh while imbibing. Pictured here is the Shakedown Street, a tequila-based cocktail featuring Aperol, lemon juice and simple syrup.

I was preordering a copy of this as a gift for my cocktail-making brother-in-law, when I decided to splurge and go ahead and order a second copy for myself. I am very happy that I did. I love this book. Not only is it full of great cocktail recipes, history and lovely photos of New Orleans area bars and lounges, but the author really explains the ingredients used in the cocktails and why. He also describes many of the specialty alcohols, that I am unfamiliar with, so that I know either what I am looking for, or what a suitable substitute may be. I anticipate that I will get quite a bit of mileage out of this book. Highly recommend.

I bought this for my husband after I borrowed a copy from the library. We're each taking turns to make drinks for each other for our date nights. The Sazerac recipe is solid. Up next is the St. Rose sour. Cheers!
