One choice can destroy you. Veronica Roth's second #1 New York Times bestseller continues the dystopian thrill ride that began in Divergent

A hit with both teen and adult readers, Insurgent is the action-packed, emotional adventure that inspired the major motion picture starring Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, and Octavia Spencer.

This deluxe collector's edition includes:

  • "Free Four": This pivotal thirteen-page scene from Divergent, retold from Tobias's point of view, reveals unknown facts and fascinating details about Four's character, his past, his own initiation, and his thoughts about new Dauntless initiate Tris Prior.
  • A ribbon bookmark
  • An exclusive, full-color foldout poster
  • Faction tattoos
  • Deckled edges
  • Forty-eight pages of bonus content, including interviews with Veronica Roth, playlists, faction party tips, and much more!

Every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves—and herself—while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable—and even more powerful.

Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

And don't miss The Fates Divide, Veronica Roth's powerful sequel to the bestselling Carve the Mark!

    Review: *DIVERGENT spoilers*

Oh! Thank you so much Veronica Roth for giving a legitimately satisfying sequel to Divergent!!! A lot of series these days have a great debut novel, questionable sequels, and ending that makes an author seem like they've aged a hundred years because their ideas have lost their fire.

Divergent is not one of those series.

In Insurgent, the corrupt parts of the 5-faction system becomes very apparent. It's not just the Erudite faction that is messing with people's heads. You start wonder if every faction actually values what its manifesto says. Lots of characters have begun to see the degrading of the rotten system, which leads rifts within factions and their eventual breakdown.

This book made me want to tear my hair out so many times, and at the same time it made me want to stick it up on an altar and worship it from my knees. You can say that I'm moody, or you can say this book was that good (FYI I only get severe mood swings from good books). I hated and loved at the same time that everyone expected so much out of Tris. I thought they truly believed in her ability to withstand difficult situations, but I also thought it was pretty cruel of them to put so much stress on her even though she'd recently lost her parents. I felt bad for Tris throughout this book because she was trying to meet everyone's standards while dealing with her own psychological issues. Really, I just wished someone stood up and screamed, "GIVE THE GIRL A BREAK!" (actually, I was really hoping Tobias would do it because it might've lead to a cute moment). Just because I felt bad for her doesn't mean that she became some locked up girl though. She's still plenty open about her thoughts, and does what she believes is right even though she knows it could make people lose their faith in her. Her relationship with Four/Tobias was moving along pretty well at first. They do have some hurdles to jump over, but I think I will love Tobias forever for his choice at the end.

Suspense played a pretty big role in Insurgent too. I swear my heart was pumping faster than 80 beats/min during tons of moments. In case you are like Dani and are wondering "Um how fast does a normal heart pump?" a heart pumps about 60-70 beats/min. Many new characters are introduced, and several recurring characters from Divergent returns. However, these new characters are almost like a 50-50 wager throughout the entire book. You know innately that they could be a great alliance to the rising rebellion, but you are unsure if they're trustworthy or not. You also learn about what really happened to Tobias's family. Tris learns a lot about who she can put her trust in, and there was one shocking betrayal that totally threw me off course because it was like a fat pie-in-the-face out of nowhere. Perhaps faction does come before blood...There was also one character aiming for redemption, but no matter what I will still be suspicious of him or her from their previous actions.

I have so many questions about this series, especially after that dang ending! I was riled up by it but super content with it at the same time! I always knew Tris was, ahh, special. The reason for the creation of the 5-faction society is revealed in this book too, and you know things are going to go to hell in the next installment. I'm wondering how Veronica Roth plans to wrap up this series in one last book because there are just so many unanswered questions and ideas that pop up. With a 1000 page book. Perfect, amazing solution to this problem! The society that was supposed to be created for a good purpose is now in utter shambles, and I don't know if it can be fixed. Well, maybe we'll get lucky and she'll decide to write a third and fourth book instead. That way the series won't end so soon :DDD. Or a 1000 page book...

A glimpse of a wonderful and insanely cute Tobias and Tris moment...
I don't remember why I came here in the first place.
    And I don't care.
I wrap my uninjured arm around him, pulling him against me. My fingers find the hem of his T-shirt, and slide beneath it, spreading wide over the small of his back. He feels so strong.
He kisses me again, more insistent this time, his hands squeezing my waist. His breaths, my breaths, his body, my body, we are so close there is no difference.
He pulls back, just a few centimeters. I almost don't let him get that far.
"This isn't what you came for," he says.
    "No."
"What did you come for, then?"
    "Who cares?"
I push my fingers through his hair, and draw his mouth to mine again. He doesn't resist, but after a few seconds, he mumbles, "Tris," against my cheek.
"Okay, okay." I close my eyes. I did come here for something important: to tell him the conversation I overheard.

Notice how long this "glimpse" of the book is. Normally we do not give out such large tidbits of books in reviews because we want YOU to read it, but we made an exception for this amazing book.

Now it's time for DANI'S COMMENTS!
Pretty much everything that Dani would like to say has been mentioned above. So Dani's got nothing to say besides that IT WAS AN AMAZING READ. There were parts that almost made Dani tear up (and you know that Dani doesn't usually cry over books or movies) because of how much Four and Tris love each other. P.S. Dani's favorite part is pages 310-313 in the hardcover normal size print edition of Insurgent. READ INSURGENT TO EXPERIENCE ITS ABILITY TO SUCK YOU INTO THE 5 FACTION WORLD AND TO READ DANI'S FAVORITE PART.

Please note, this review does contain spoilers of Divergent, the first book in this series. If you haven't read Divergent, I recommend you read that before you read this review! :)

The second installment in Veronica Roth's Divergent series, Insurgent picks up right where the first book left off. In dystopian Chicago, after stopping a simulated attack by the Erudite faction, Katniss-esque heroine, Tris, along with her surviving mixed faction pack of friends and family, must find a way to stop Jeanine, the evil leader of the Erudite, in order to protect their world from further destruction. Throughout her journey to resolve the conflict of warring factions, Tris must deal with her grief and guilt, learn who she can and cannot trust, balance a new relationship and decide if discovering and understanding the truth behind the attacks are more important than stopping them.

I really appreciated that this sequel began in the same breath Divergent left off; this left nothing for me to imagine between books. There is a lot of action in this novel so there is little time for the reader to be bored or uninterested. However, with this action comes a lot of moving all over the place and a lot of emotional back-and-forth. I took away one star because of the choppiness I experienced as Tris & Co. zoom from faction to faction and I tried to keep straight who was good, who was bad, who had what abilities and how Tris felt about everyone (not that her feelings are ever kept secret from the reader). All that said, I truly did enjoy this book! Many readers probably would not find anything wrong with this, perhaps I just like some predictability of where a book is headed.

One realization I had that helped me better appreciate the chaos of this book was zeroing in on a theme; while Divergent is a book that examines Tris' understanding of herself, Insurgent enlightens Tris to understanding her world and how she fits into it. Both realizations are not as black and white as Tris is raised to see the world. People are not one-sided so as to fit into one faction, and Insurgent illustrates Tris' journey understanding and relating to all of the factions to which these people belong, good, bad and everything in between. I find that reading with the perspective of this theme made all of the moving around more forgivable.

One of my favorite parts of this series has been the glints of religious (leaning toward Christian) commentary found in little spots. I majored in English and Religious Studies in college with a focus on Religion in Literature to join both majors, so any time I find what looks like an author's commentary on any Abrahamic religion, I become quite delighted! When Tris described the Erudite as making "no judgments about what people believed, but designed things for them within the confines of those beliefs" I became especially interested in the factions as shades of belief relating to each other. If I was still in college I might want to develop a paper on this, so if you're in college and/or interested in such explications in fiction about religion, you should definitely read this series!

Bottom Line: If you read Divergent, I probably don't even have to tell you to read this because you probably already have! If you haven't read either, start at the beginning as quickly as possible! Or do what I wish I would have done and wait until October to start so the release of the third book doesn't feel SO FAR AWAY!! 4/5 Stars (okay, 4.5 out of 5...)

5.0 out of 5 stars A gigantic character cast, an expansive world building and the extensive web of relationships!
Reviewed in Germany on November 27, 2013
DIVERGENT drowned me in a pool of emotions with all its life-changing events, the shock of sudden losses and the unique connection between Tris and Four. INSURGENT continues our story seemlessly right where DIVERGENT left off. Tris and Four are granted a few quiet moments in which the damage of the past hours and days can fully sink in. Yet the unpredictability and the explosive potential of the story didn’t change at all. Although things seem calm, pandemonium can break out at any second. Another attack thrown by the enemies, another secret bringing our lovers farther apart. You never know what's waiting behind a new page turned.

Tris and Four are put under a huge pressure to not only save the entire nation, but to save their relationship and themselves. After the tragic events of DIVERGENT, Tris cannot return to being the person she once was. Veronica Roth took Tris on an inevitable journey to finding her true self in the chaos of war. Defining who she can rely on, who are her enemies and what she has to make out of everything for herself, Tris goes through an enormous character transformation. Her character appears one of the weakest and at the same time strongest YA heroines I had the pleasure to meet. She's a very ambivalent character. At times I just wanted to shake her for her stolidity and her inability to stop herself from acting without thinking about her friends and boyfriend first. She also made me admire her for her humanity in times of lack thereof. Thanks to a brilliantly written 1st person narrator, Tris' journey grips you and integrates you into her thoughts and her story as if it were your own.

Tobias, or Four as I still prefer to call him, is definitely one of my favourite YA male characters out there. He always seemed just as strong as Tris and their equality is what makes them such a natural couple to me. They can always rely on the other and their reasons for choosing the other to be their best friend, their love make them so true. But INSURGENT wouldn’t be the second book in a series, if the tension between the two of them wasn’t building. It seems inevitable with all the inner conflicts and outer battles going on, but somehow it just didn’t feel right to me. Tris and Four fighting. They are both two very powerful personalities, but I didn’t want to see them fight and their disagreements honestly started to annoy me at some point. Is it so wrong that the peace-loving me just wanted to see them be happy and have swoon-worthy moments? Well, the rational me knew there just had to be something to come in their way.

Sometimes INSURGENT and its bombastically constructed story held the potential for an information overload. There is just so much happening at once and so much information to process. So don't be afraid to take reading breaks and the time to think about everything that's happening. Give your pulse a chance to calm down.
Veronica Roth always seems to find exactly the right words to make a character like Uriah appear cocky, yet loyal. Four, one of the most relentless fighters among the Dauntless, a sweetly loving boyfriend. Tris such a tough hero and on the inside an emotionally torn daughter, sister, friend, girlfriend. Christina, Peter, Eric, Tori, Caleb, Marcus, Marlene, Lynn just perfect the way they are. Don’t let me get started. You see I’m in love with every character, this series and Veronica Roth for being so talented.

4,5/5 ****/* INSURGENT - A gigantic character cast, an expansive world building and the extensive web of relationships make INSURGENT such a stunningly successful sequel!

Very clever, very complex. A read that challenges your brain cells, your moral beliefs, your heart, demanding the ability to read concentratedly and patiently through 525 pages of a story that equals TNT. Veronica Roth's DIVERGENT trilogy stands out of the YA fiction branch as something entirely new and brilliant!

3.0 out of 5 stars It was OK, although very disappointing at times.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 17, 2012
I brought Insurgent right after i finished Divergent, as it was so good. Therefor, i had very high expectations for it. Did it reach my expectations? Nope.

It starts of exactly in the same place that we finished of in Divergent. The beginning was REALLY slow, boring and stupid (i have to say). Tris kept on saying how sorry she was and how much she regrets for what she did to Will. It continued practically throughout the whole book. Like really!!!? What is the flipping point? We get it, moving on please...!
Oh, and not only did she say how much she regrets what she did for ages, but also, lets just say, she had problems with firing and holding a gun. Like no worries! I'm just in the middle of the war with people trying to kill me or stab me in the heart. But who cares, right?
Plus, we kept on coming back to what happened to Will. She kept on even having those dreams and dejevus. i was like - 'urghhhhhhhhh!Someone put me out of my misery!'

Although, the beginning was boring, it got much, much better in the middle ( 280 - 370 pg). That was the part that i most enjoyed. It was really cool and surprisingly i didn't find it boring. It kept me turning the pages.

But, after 370 pages, guess what happened again? We get back to the same boring and uninteresting stuff. All i could think about was when i would finish this book.

Plus, Tris and Tobias relationship was getting worse. They kept on having fights and sometimes i had a feeling they even stopped trusting each other ( if they trusted each other in the fist place). And Tobias was starting to piss me off. All this stuff with his dad was getting old.

However, the very ending was super awesome and had my breath catching in my throat.

So yeah, this book is sometimes boring but sometimes really interesting and cool.

Overall, Insurgent is definetly not as good as Divergent and it was just OK. But, because of the amazing ending and my curiosity, i might give the 3rd book a go.
