Cranked amp tone in a pedal! - Quick Review
Brian and Kelsey
Product Description
The Morning Glory is undoubtedly our most well-known overdrive pedal, winning more awards and receiving more accolades than any of our other designs. We worked hard to make it one of the most transparent overdrives out there. When you want to add some mid- to low-level grit to your crystal-clean tone, use your Morning Glory. When you want to boost a crunchy tone into thicker sustain, use your Morning Glory. When you need to add tube-like touch response to a less-than-ideal amp, use your Morning Glory. When you need to switch between two gain levels on the fly...you get the idea.

Truly Transparent ToneThe best way to explain the Morning Glory is that it delivers all the tonal and responsive nuance that your amp is missing, and nothing that your tone already has. It’s difficult describing a pedal that can be set to have little effect on your tone. So just plug into our Morning Glory overdrive for yourself. Then you’ll understand. |
On-the-fly VersatilityAn update for the Morning Glory V4 is moving the original's front-mounted bright-cut switch to the side of the pedal and replacing it with a powerful boost circuit. And by pairing your Morning Glory V4 with the JHS Red Remote (sold separately), you’re able to access the boost mid-song. It’s like having two Morning Glorys in one pedalboard-friendly package. |
Power RequirementsThis pedal requires standard 9V DC Negative power, consumes less than 100mA, and measures 2.2"x4.8"x1.6". |

About JHS Pedals
JHS Pedals is the result of Josh Scott’s desire to build quality effects pedals that stand out in an over-saturated market. Started in early 2007 by way of a DIY repair to a Boss Blues Driver, JHS Pedals has evolved into an effects pedal company recognized world-wide. Josh’s years of touring and session work along with eventual electronics tinkering bring the experience and knowledge of what musicians need and want in their rigs, and that is one of the core values that JHS was built upon.
With a complete electric guitar, bass guitar, utility, and Mod Shop, JHS Pedals offers one of the broadest lines of effects on the market today. We value and commit to designing, populating, and assembling pedals that sound excellent, are easy to use, and work correctly.

Think of the drive knob as the volume on an old tube amp. It will only really distort at around 2 o’clock and beyond. You get great breakup with pick attack before that point. At 3 o’clock and beyond, things get very saturated and saggy, like you would expect a JTM-45 to behave.
I previously owned a Friedman Mini Dirty Shirley combo, because I wanted that JTM-45 sound. You don’t need a $1800 hardwired amp to get that. If you have an amp that takes pedals well, just get one of these.
I originally intended to stack a Timmy into this for more gain. But that’s not needed with humbuckers. Just turn the drive up as high as your guitar’s volume pot will allow you to so you can adequately dial things back for cleanish tones. You won’t need a gain boost if you’re after vintage 60s to early 70s British rock tones.
A fantastic pedal.
Note first off that the Charlie Brown is not a 'Marshall in a box' pedal. I think some buyers expect a lot more gain from this pedal than it really brings. By itself, it's actually a fairly low output overdrive. If you want best results, it needs a little bit of gain from a Marshall style amplifier, or it needs to drive another Marshall style pedal.
Jack Griffiths, who was until recently the main presenter/guitarist for retailer Peach Guitars in the UK, describes the JHS Charlie Brown v4 as one of his very favorite overdrive pedals, providing a warm sounding Marshall JTM45 sound when paired with a slightly overdriven amp.
I'm using this with my main at-home amp, an OG Blackstar HT-5, with a Tung-Sol 12AX7 preamp tube and an Electro-Harmonix 12BH7 Gold power amp tube. The HT-5's treble is dimed, mid and bass are both at 10 o'clock, and ISF is all the way to the right (UK side). For this particular pedal I want amp gain set fairly low, at or below 10 o'clock, which is actually quite clean sounding through my 1x12 cab with a Celestion Greenback.
At the pedal side, I have volume and treble dimed, gain at about 10 o'clock, bass just below 2 o'clock, and mid at about 11 o'clock.
With these settings, played with a Fender Stratocaster with early 60s specs, I agree with Jack Griffiths--this combination sounds convincingly like a mid 60s Marshall JTM. I can dial it back or put a little more hair on it, and it still has 'that sound.' I've tried it with several of my fuzz pedals in front of it, and they respond as expected. I've also tried the Charlie Brown in front of an LPD Sixty8 (a Marshall Plexi style pedal), with the LPD as the preamp instead of the amp's gain. That's not as warm as the amp itself, although that is because the LPD Sixty8 is kind of dry sounding.
I'm taking off a point for the almost useless volume knob. As at least one other reviewer has accurately stated, unity gain is around 3 o'clock or higher. So it's a volume suck anywhere below that, and it gets slightly noisy right before it's dimed. IMO that lack of headroom is unacceptable from a manufacturer of this stature. I think the v5 Charlie Brown should correct this obvious oversight.
Judging by the quality of sound when paired with a Marshall style preamp, this is as close as I've heard to a JTM sound from a pedal. Well done, although it does have some room for improvement.

Parfait.
Promosso a pieni voti.
