Book One in the Phenomenally Bestselling Fixed Series
"This book blew me away." - Emma Hart, NY Times Bestselling Author
Stalking and restraining orders are a thing of Alayna Wither's past. With her MBA newly in hand, she has her future figured out--move up at the nightclub she works at and stay away from any guy who might trigger her obsessive love disorder. A perfect plan.
But what Alayna didn't figure on is Hudson Pierce, the new owner of the nightclub. He's smart, rich, and gorgeous--the kind of guy Alayna knows to stay away from if she wants to keep her past tendencies in check.
Except, Hudson's fixed his sights on her.
He wants her in his bed and makes no secret of it. Avoiding him isn't an option after he offers a business proposition she can't turn down and she's drawn further into his universe, unable to resist his gravitational pull. When she learns Hudson has a dark history of his own, she realizes too late that she's fallen for the worst man she could possibly get involved with.
Or maybe their less than ideal pasts give them an opportunity to heal each other and finally find the love their lives have been missing.

About the author
With millions of books sold worldwide, Laurelin Paige is a New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestselling Author. She is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Game of Thrones or Letterkenny, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. She's also a proud member of Mensa International though she doesn't do anything with the organization except use it as material for her bio. She is represented by Rebecca Friedman.

Hudson Pierce gets what he wants, and right now what he wants is Alayna. He saw her present her thesis project where he was a judge/panelist, and she is everything he likes in a woman: brunette, large-chested, gorgeous, and smart. She is the perfect person for him to hire to pretend to be his girlfriend to get his mother off his back as she has been bullying him into marrying the daughter of her best friend with whom he has no attraction to or interest in beyond friendship. Laynie, the bartender of the club he has just acquired as a "hot, young billionaire CEO" of {insert generic sounding name here} company, is his type to a T, which is why he is certain she will be convincing in the role of gf who has earned his ever-loving devotion and will release him from any obligation his mother has attempted to entangle him in. And while Hudson believes he is incapable of love, he 100% wants to get it on with Laynie behind-the-scenes. But how can that possibly work between a couple where one cannot connect and the other over-connects? What happens when the line between the pretend and the real starts to blur?
What I liked:
--- Hudson is a mega alpha male - yum!
--- Laynie is a gorgeous woman, but she is super flawed which makes her feel way more relatable
--- STEAMY goodness!
What I didn't like as much:
--- Sometimes there is way more angst than necessary, but the author mostly resolves those issues quickly (meaning miscommunication is rarely the problem, or if it is, it isn't for long)
--- One of my pet peeves is a free book that does not clearly indicate it is not a standalone and then ends in a cliffhanger - grrrrr
Overall, a delicious read with plenty of steam, twists, and strong plot line. (And, of course, I had to go and get the next book!)
Plot --- 4.5/5
Main Characters --- 4.5/5
Supporting Cast --- 4/5
Steam Level* --- 4/5
Violence --- none
Language --- the f word makes appearances early & often
POV --- 1st (Laynie's POV)
*Note that steam level is not a rating so much as a how hot was it: 0/5 - clean; 1/5 - mild; 2/5 - sensual but nothing descriptive; 3/5 - now we're getting somewhere; 4/5 - yes please! ; 5/5 - they did EVERYTHING in this one, y'all
Just a side note/update that did not affect my review, but I wanted to express my disappointment re my interaction with the author. After purchasing the entire set of Fixed series books along with the Found duet, some of the Dirty series, and a couple of spin-offs and standalones, I found her website and applied to be an ARC reader (I filled out the form and linked to my MANY reviews on Amazon, Goodreads, and Bookbub). I received a response that only fans of her work that had read her books were able to be on the ARC team. I was confused and replied that I had read her books, reviewed them on multiple platforms, and I was a fan which is why I had applied to be on her review team. She just gave me an "I'll look into it" kind of reply and never responded. I get that she is probably a busy person, but it doesn't take long to say "So sorry - my review team is currently full but I will keep your information in case there is an opening." Since then, I have not purchased any of her books; I did pick one up when it was free, but I was pretty put off with her dismissive response and was very disappointed that she didn't seem to really care about her readers.
I really enjoyed the writing of Laurelin Paige. Unlike other books, she didn’t write a scene or character with excess or exaggerated accounts with the intent to heighten the drama of the story. In doing so, the narrative didn’t feel forced and the pace wasn’t slowed by being bogged down with unnecessary details. There wasn’t a moment where I found myself feeling bored.
I was quite taken with Mr. Hudson Pierce. I finally understood why everyone seemed to be swooning over him. He really embodied the dominant, confident, sexy, dark picture that we have regarding our leading men. In the book, Alayna speaks of the sexual presence that you instantly feel while in his presence and I must say I felt that presence reading scenes that involved him. He’s really one of the more magnetizing male characters that I’ve read in quite a while.
What I appreciated most about this book was the type of conflict and issues that Alayna and Hudson had to deal with. It wasn’t the kind that I often found in erotic romances such as this. It was very interesting to read of the struggles with their respective issues, Alayna with her obsessive brand of love that leads her to stalk her love interest and Hudson’s sociopathic-like tendencies to manipulate women. These kinds of psychological issues added a much deeper layer to the complicated relationship between the couple as opposed to just some external source of conflict. It is through their struggles with their issues that illustrated the many facets to Alayna’s and Hudson’s characters. I came to admire how Alayna clearly acknowledges the mistakes of her past and her attempts at trying to stick to the path of recovery. But it also shows how vulnerable she is and how she’s let her fear hold her back from a possible true romantic relationship. It’s her past issues that leave her in a constant state of insecurity and vulnerability that leaves you feeling sympathetic towards her. With Hudson, you come to see his confidence and charm as a mask to hide his true feelings: his belief of his inability to love someone which stems from a twisted and horrible relationship with his mother. Along with feeling enthralled with him, you eventually come to feel compassion for him in his attempts to not fall back in his manipulative and destructive behaviors towards women. You can see how his honest attempt to not hurt Alayna in that manner. I loved how this common thread of dysfunctional past behavior creates a unique connection between them. You can see how they can possibly help each other since they understand where the other has come from. This layer of psychological issues makes you feel more invested in them as individuals and in them together as a couple.
As a whole I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable this book was. You got the expected erotic portion of the story, which I must say those were very hot and sexy, but I didn’t expect the brand of inner turmoil that the Alayna and Hudson had to deal with. Their issues not only provided the conflict to their relationship but it added another layer to each of them as individuals and to their situation as whole. It was a kind of complication that made their story unique and interesting to read. This first book has made me look forward to reading the rest of their story along.

My main problem is Hudson, sometimes I loved him, but sometimes he was annoying. The heroine was strong which I appreciated.
It's steamy af and the writing style pretty awesome. I'm definitely gonna read more books from the author 😍
Hudson is a conundrum of a character - on the outside he appears as a cool, collected, savvy businessman but it's all a veneer. Internally, he is all cut up. He tells Laynie that he isn't capable of love, but really, it's that he feels unworthy of love.
She is actually the same - she tells him she loves too much (she has an obsessive personality and a stalker reputation/past) but that's not true. She is pretty much running scared. So, they are more alike than they realise.
I raced through this book as if a gun-toting maniac was holding a weapon to my head. It sucked me right in and I struggled to put it down. The writing is superb, the plot is dark and compelling, the characters are multi-layered and about as complex as you can get, and the pacing is bang-on.
This is an excellent series by a hugely talented author and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
